slopes from a single proprietor (whose entire holdings, in fact, Aviron has vinified since 2000). Fresh cherry shadowed by kirsch and laced with piquancy of its pits receives an alluring bouquet of iris and mouthwatering lick of salt add to the appeal of a wine whose mid-palate promise of juiciness and vibrancy is slightly perturbed by a faint hint of caramelized resin from barrel. Enjoy it through 2016 – and revisit it if possible in 2014. It wasn’t bottled until October, and Aviron insists it needs time in bottle to slough-off the effects of both barrel and bottling."

s work—but she would not be deterred from her dream of becoming a vigneronne. The Côte-de-Brouilly appellation sits on the hillsides of Mont Brouilly, a prehistoric volcano that left blue schist stones and volcanic rock along its slopes. These stones yield structured wines with pronounced minerality and great aging potential. After her formal training at the viticultural school in Beaune Nicole had a brief internship in the Napa Valley, where she learned another approach to winemaking but, happily for us, gained a deeper appreciation of the traditional winemaking techniques of the Beaujolais: hand harvesting, whole cluster fermentation, aging the wines in large oak foudres for at least nine months, and bottling unfiltered. The resulting wines are powerful, with loads of pure fruit character and floral aromas.

at this 40-acre family estate and has attracted the attention of the French and American press for the wonderfully fruity and delicate wines he produces.

Brun wants to make "old-style" Beaujolais and his vinification differs from the prevailing practices in the region. He believes that the charm of Gamay's fruit is best expressed by the grapes' indigenous yeasts, rather than by adding industrial yeast. Virtually all Beaujolais is now made by adding a particular yeast during fermentation.

Brun's view is that Beaujolais drinks best at a lower degree of alcohol and that there is no need to systematically add sugar to the must (chaptalize) to reach alcohol levels of 12 to 13 degrees. So he chaptalizes minimally or not at all - depending on the vintage and the cuvée. His Beaujolais is made to be pleasurable - light, fruity and delicious - not an artificially inflated wine that shines at tasting competitions.

Only a minimal amount of S02 is used at bottling to keep the wine fresh and "headache-free". Fermentation naturally produces a lot of CO2, which acts as protection against oxidation during aging; leaving some in the wine at bottling time also helps to keep it fresh. Filtration is also minimal so that the wine keeps its original fruit and aromas. Brun’s wines are not ‘blockbusters’ in the sense of ‘big.’ The emphasis is not on weight, but on fruit: Beaujolais as it once was and as it should be.

But that wouldn't mean anything if the wine weren't so well made and delicious. Château Thivin, still run by the Geoffray family, who purchased the estate at the end of the 19th century, has vineyards planted with mostly 50-year-old Gamay vines, one reason these wines have such character.

s 2010 Fleurie La Chapelle des Bois Tres Vieilles Vignes has indeed well-exceeded even my exalted Issue 196 expectations, so I feel bound not just to offer an update, but one that reflects my awe. Almond extract, rowan, freesia, and dark berries and stone fruits shadowed by their distilled counterparts combine for a penetratingly high-toned and hauntingly complex aroma. The texture here has turned positively silky and this essence from centenarian vines finishes not just with the “pristine purity of fruit ... complex depth of flavor (and) vibratory intensity” on which I commented before it was bottled, but with a soaring sense of buoyancy and a kaleidoscopic interaction of floral, fruit, and mineral nuances. Although the track record for Duperray’s wines is short, I feel confident that one like this will remain awesome at least through 2020."

signaling one of those numerous instances in his oeuvre where notes from barrel strike me as interfering with the pleasure otherwise derivable from ripe, pure fruit allied to mineral nuance. Unfortunately, a slight drying note in the finish must also be lain at the door of the cooper. That having been noted, there is certainly much to like here, from an expansive and sweetly ripe palate, through high-toned notes of almond extract and maraschino that mingle with the aforementioned oak-induced overtones, to a sustained, salt- and crushed stone-accented if faintly rough and only modestly juicy finish."

fruit vivacity and incorporating an abundance of fine tannin, which as de Castelnau acknowledges reflects an emphasis on pigeage that was especially pronounced with this cuvee. Smoked meat, peat, and crushed stone add depth and this finishes with impressive persistence, even if a touch of tannin seems, for now, to have the last word. The wine itself is soft and unctuous, tasting of prunes and dried cherries, a voluptuous cru Beaujolais made with painstaking care. "Little would we know that when Marcel Lapierre took over the family domaine from his father in 1973, he was on the road to becoming a legend. In 1981, his path would be forever changed Read More...
by Jules Chauvet, a man whom many now call his spiritual godfather. Chauvet was a winemaker, a researcher, a chemist, and a viticultural prophet. It was he who, upon the advent of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the 1950s, first spoke out for “natural wine,” harkening back to the traditional methods of the Beaujolais. Joined by local vignerons Guy Breton, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Jean Foillard, Marcel spearheaded a group that soon took up the torch of this movement. Kermit dubbed this clan the Gang of Four, and the name has stuck ever since. These rebels called for a return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification: starting with old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulfur dioxide or none at all, and disdaining chapitalization. Marcel was recently joined by his son Mathieu, and together they took the natural wine philosophy one step further, following organic and biodynamic vineyard practices. The end of the 2010 vintage was Marcel’s last. He passed away at the end of the harvest—a poetic farewell for a man that forever changed our perception of Beaujolais. Mathieu continues the great work that his father pioneered with confidence, albeit on his own.

The methods at Lapierre are just as revolutionary as they are traditional; the detail and precision with which they work is striking and entirely different from the mass-produced majority of Beaujolais on the market today. Decomposed granite comprises most of their eleven hectares, and the vines are an average of 45 years of age. Grapes are picked at the last possible moment to obtain the ripest fruit, which is a trademark of the estate style. The Lapierres age their wines on fine lees for at least nine months in oak foudres and fûts ranging from three to thirteen years old. These wines are the essence of Morgon: bright, fleshy fruit with a palatable joie de vivre that was undoubtedly inherited from their creator. In the words of KLWM salesperson Sam Imel, “They are meant to be devoured.” " Kermitlynch.com

in the Desjourneys 2009 Moulin-a-Vent, which I tasted in its final assemblage. I’m at a loss to locate all of the complexities I earlier discerned in the individual lots of Michelons and Chassignol that were incorporated, but the nut oils, cocoa powder, and crushed stone that add to this blend’s finishing savor help this blend testify to some of the excitement I recorded in my issue 190 barrel tastings. I suspect that it needs time to settle-down – though it has been bottled since I recorded this most recent note – and for its tannin to more completely integrate. But make no mistake: this is a long, strong performer even by the exceedingly high standards of its vintage and the even higher standards already established at Domaine Jules Desjourneys. Plan on revisiting it – as I shall – a year from now and tentatively on following it for 6-8 years."

their Chenas En Papolet seems evident also in a prominent, mouthwatering salinity and a sense of lift and sappy brightness of red currant and red raspberry. Those looking for geological signs might associate the iron- and manganese-rich characteristic for Moulin-a-Vent in general with the deep beef marrow, meat-stock richness that underlies this Carquelin and supplies a dynamic, yet somehow by no means discordant, counterpoint to the wine’s sharply-focused red fruits. As with the corresponding Champs de Cour, tannin is very fine and in the background, and the texture is almost silken. Hints of lanolin and brown spices from barrel are discreet and well-integrated. This should be worth following for half a dozen or more years. (The 2009 performed this June at the upper end of my issue 190 projection, displaying an even more striking, shimmering mineral savor.)"
