GUIBORAT FILS A`CRAMANT BRUT TRADITION

Fifth-generation winegrower Richard Fouquet has been making the wines at his family’s Cramant estate since 1996. Fouquet farms (in increasingly organic fashion) some 20 acres of vines two-thirds being Chardonnay from the northern Côte des Blancs and one-third Vallée de la Marne Pinot Meunier. However Fouquet uses only his five best acres for his own marque and sells the bulk of his fruit to Laurent-Perrier. His Brut Tradition is based (90%) on the 2010 vintage with rest drawn from 2009. The cepage is two-thirds Chardonnay from Cramant, Chouilly and Oiry, blended with a third of Pinot Meunier from Mardeuil. Fouquet ferments in stainless steel with full malolactic which confers a sense of plushness and ripeness to the ensemble while ample acids and a minimal dosage (4.5 g/l of sugar) provide balance and drive. While our stock was disgorged last May, these Wine Advocate notes by David Schildknecht on a slightly earlier (3/2013) bottling remain relevant: “There is a lovely dark, fresh cherry note here that I honestly can’t confidently attribute to one or the other of the wine’s cepages, and that is incorporated into a delightfully exuberant and luscious matrix with lemon, white peach and pineapple, seemingly perfectly supported by the dosage. The palate impression strikes an ideal balance between subtle creaminess – enhanced by a palpable sense of chalk suffusion – and refreshing vivacity, while hints of salt and stone add salivary stimulation and shimmer to a satisfyingly sustained finish. This ought to drink well for at least a couple of years. 90 points”
