Citrus blossom accents add lift to the nose and palate. There's nice weight here, balanced by tangy acidity, leading toward an unctuous finish. This versatile white wine makes a charming aperitif, but it really shines at the dinner table.

to the local co-operative and decide to make his own wine. Right from the start he turned out as one of the best producers in the Pfalz and one of the best Pinot Noir producers in Germany. 60% of his production is Pinot Noir which is grown primarily on stony, chalky soil on the Alsatian side of the border and his wines are made, according to his comments ‘by instinct’.
Nice pinkish color, floral nose of strawberry, apricot and green apple fruit aromas. Bracing acidity and stony freshness, delicate but persistent. This Rose? is a selection of ripe red grapes from different sites and Soils. Mainly Pinot Noir and Portugieser but as well some Cabernet Grapes.

piquant and elegant on the palate this is a rich, sweet and salty, stimulating Riesling with a sensual fruitiness and a piquant length. Lovely to drink now and over the next 20 years.

John Gilman - View from the Cellar
"The 2013 Dönnhoff Brücke Spätlese is pure magic in the making. The brilliantly complex nose soars from the glass in a blaze of pears, white cherries, pink grapefruit, clementines, stunningly complex minerality, perhaps a whisper of petrol, bee pollen and spring flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and beautifully reserved in profile, with a great core, stunning filigree, racy acids, laser-like focus and simply stunning length and grip on the electric finish. This is the best vintage of Brücke Spätlese since the twin gems of 2011 and 2007. Really a beautiful wine in the making. 2018-2040."

very well indeed. All this fruit hails from the Keiselberg vineyard, which according to Herr Dönnhoff lies right in the middle of the transition of the volcanic soils found in Schlossböckelheim and the slate of Oberhäusen and Niederhäusen, so it is a mix of slate, gravel and volcanic soils. The 2014 version comes in at ten percent alcohol and thirty grams per liter of residual sugar and offers up a really vibrant bouquet of apple, white cherries, a touch of wild yeasts, smoky overtones, spring flowers and a nice base of complex soil tones. On the palate the wine is medium-full, bright and juicy, with a good core, just a touch of sweetness, bright acids and fine focus and grip on the long, bouncy and vibrant finish. Good everyday juice. 2015-2025. 89.

my visit and was a bit out of sorts as a result. The nose is open and juicy at the present time, offering up scents of apple, peach, lovely soil tones, a touch of beeswax and a topnote of citrus blossoms. On the palate the wine is medium-full, accessible and succulent on the attack, with a nice core of fruit, good complexity and a slightly pinched finish at the present time, from the very, very recent bottling. I am sure this will be very tasty, but it was not entirely on form at the time of my visit. 2015-2025. 89-90+?

Trocken from Klaus-Peter Keller. In 2014, this wine finished up at 11.5 percent alcohol and eight grams per liter of acidity. The yields were very low this year for this wine and it has ended up with a rock solid core as a result, with the bouquet a fine, youthful blend of grapefruit, tart orange, petrol, chalky soil tones, lemon peel and a topnote of dried flowers. On the palate the wine is pure, fullish and quite deep, with lovely, nascent complexity, ripe, snappy acids and superb length and grip on the focused and serious finish. As Klaus-Peter noted, “perhaps this is the best basic Riesling we have made.” It deserves a few years in the cellar to start to unfold its secondary layers of complexity and is a great value in 2014. 2017-2030+."

tlese contains "10 to 15 per cent of botrytis grapes" and opens with an intense aroma of ultra-ripe pineapples and mango, including some shellfish flavors. The palate is sweet, piquant and very elegant, extremely well balanced and seductive, the sweetness is nothing but luscious and sensual. This is a great Riesling Spätlese on its own but if you have the patience to store it for a decade or two it could also be a great food wine. (Can't spit it...) "In general, I think 2013 is a very classical German vintage,“ says Georg Rumpf. Most of the wines were bottled without a chemical deacidification. The Rumpfs preferred a short maceration (up to eight hours) to buffer the pronounced acidity of the vintage, and indeed the wines are well balanced although they keep their sturdy, house character. Winemaking is very traditional here, no enzymes are used for the must clarification and the aging of the wines takes place in stainless steel and traditional Stückfässern (1200 oak barrels). "However, we focus more on larger casks up to 2,500 liters in the last years to keep the elegance and finesse in our wines,“ says Georg, who keeps his wines on the lees until the bottling, which takes place from March until June.

********* Importer's notes: In the last four years the family purchased top parcels with old vines from the mid 1960s in top crus like Pittersberg, Kapellenberg and Rheinberg from the former Weinbaudomäne Niederhausen-Schloss Böckelheim (which is now Gut Hermansberg). Another highlight is the Binger Scharlachberg in Rheinhessen which the family took from Prinz Salm’s Villa Sachsen. Münsterer Dautenpflänzer is composed of slate and sandy loam and is one of Kruger-Rumpf’s top sites. Multi-faceted and complex, this GG site is one of the leading Grand Crus of the lower Nahe, with a typical mélange of soil types within its borders. Vineyards are farmed sustainably!

berries come to the forefront followed by a trace of lemony citrus. With a hint of minerality on the lingering finish this wine is perfect as either an aperitrif or served with chicken, fish and seafood.

Wine making along the Ahr was founded by the Romans more than 1,000-years-ago. Historic records give evidence for cultivation from the year 770. Since the 13th century the region has been renowned for the cultivation of red varieties. This tradition has been continued, with an emphasis on growing Pinot Noir since the 18th century.

As a fifth generation family estate, a passion for wine is at the core of Mayer-Nakel Winery. Today’s wine estate was established by the marriage of Paula Meyer and Willibald Näkel. Although Willibald Näkel only cultivated 1.5 hectares of vines he was already a pioneer for the then rather unusual dry red wines from the Ahr valley. Today’s 15 hectares estate is managed by his son Werner Näkel, Werner's wife, Claudia, and their daughters Meike and Dorte.

The vineyards were planted and the winery built by Johan Ludwig Wolf in the early 19th century. He lost the hillside property (including his acres of forest) in a card game. The property changed hands several times and was purchased by Thomas and Ute Hensel in the early 1990s. They restored the winery building and converted the vineyards to organic farming. Since 2006 the grapes have been farmed biodynamically. The wines are fermented with wild yeasts and the Riesling sees no oak.

s 2013 entry-level trocken is a little more demanding than its predecessors. The fruit is firmer and crunchier, the acidity certainly authentic and the salty minerality quite pronounced. Solid rock! (MS) (4/2014)

*** Certified organic since 2009. Hansjorg Rebholz grows his Riesling in vineyards of primarily red sandstone and ages it in steel. Ripeness levels are 90+ degrees, well into Spatlese quality with about 7g of acid; but this is a completely dry wine. Fruit comes from all of his top vineyards; there are no “lesser sites” designated for the estate blend. The wine is undeniably salty, with a lean, bright, precise character, rich in body yet tensile and graceful on the tongue. Yellow fruits play hide and seek on the palate, capped by a sort of gin & tonic quality in the tail—-but ultimately, this is about stones and vineyard character. One of the great dry estate wines (gutsweins) of Germany—-and a benchmark for the style.
