GALLICA 2011 PROPRIETARY RED "SUZURI" AMADOR COUNTY 750mL

This is the personal label for Rosemary Cakebread. Rosemary had been the winemaker at Spottswoode for over a decade, and in 2007 she began her own label. The wine has been a hit since its first release, and beginning with the 2010 vintage, she has crafted an amazing Rhone-inspired, Grenache based wine from the now famous Shake Ridge Vineyard in Amador County. Named "SUZURI", this describes the Japanese inspired ink prints on the Gallica label. One of the four essential tools of ancient calligraphy, the inkstone or "SUZURI", is considered to be the soul and core of the artistís tools.

2011 is a sensational vintage for anything in the Rhone varietal family. Cool seasons such as this elevate the delicate aromatics notable in these varietals. The 2011 blend is composed of 53% Grenache, 31% Syrah, 14% Mourvedre, and 2% Viognier. Burgundian methods were used with gentle extraction, hand punchdowns, and judicious use of oak. Rosemary's goal is to make a wine with precise fruit, harmony, and integration of varietals, yet not overwhelmed by the oak aging. Grenache dominates the blend with redcurrants and plums, Mourvedre brings spine, and the beautiful Syrah Noir contributes smoked meats with a touch of garam massala. Viognier was especially gorgeous at Shake Ridge and its unique aromatics are unrivaled. The decision to make a Grenache blend was an easy one, born out of my love for both southern and northern Rhone. Shake Ridge Ranch is nestled in the Amador foothills of California, impeccably farmed by Ann Kraemer and family.
