south of Italy. Ciro makes wine based on his tastes and not on the chemical equations or statistics, and is finding huge success at it. The vibrancy, expression of terroir including salinity and volcanic soil and purity of his wines are second to none and carry a tremendous value. Fiano has an unusual ability for aging as well carries a notable silky texture and powerful core of flavors ranging from diesel earthen to stone fruits and herbs. This is a very complex and attractive wine and producer for true oenophiles.

The white wines grown on the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius near Naples are some of Italy’s most compelling and complex. The vineyard name “Campo Re” means royal vineyard and indeed it’s arguably Read More...
the most famous single site in Campania for both the famed DOCGs of Taurasi and Fiano di Avelino. The story of “Campo Re” takes a tricky turn when the Mastroberardino family split the business in the 1990s, with Walter Mastroberadino taking the historic vineyards while his cousin retained the brand name. However the “Campo Re” of today was the original “Radici” vineyard of from many years ago that built the Mastroberdino family’s reputation on the top tier. This special single vineyard bottling shows creamy lemon-chiffon fruit with acacia and a mellow citrusy-edge, like mandarin orange and bergamot. Elements of honey, nutmeg spice and toasty oak lend this Fiano a depth that reminds us of a fine white Burgundy. There is also plenty of volcanic minerality laced throughout the mid-palate sure to please the terroir-hunters and purists. We tasted the rare “Campo Re” Fiano at a special tasting of Italian wines more than a year ago and we’ve been thinking about it ever since.
