ROCCA DI FRASSINELLO 2010 "LE SUGHERE"

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "The 2010 Le Sughere di Frassinello bursts from the glass with an exciting melange of sweet red cherries, herbs, licorice and tobacco. It shows lovely mid-palate depth in a medium-bodied, sleek style supported by firm yet well-integrated tannins. The 2010 fleshes out nicely on the substantial finish. Le Sughere is 50% Sangioveto, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017."

We’ve been following the Rocca di Frassinello estate for the last couple years—bring Chateau Lafite into a joint venture on the Tuscan coast with Chianti’s much heralded Castellare estate and you have our attention. Time and again, our favorite bottling from Frassinello has been the “Le Sughere di Frassinello.” “Le Sughere” is meant as second wine from the large Frassinello estate, next to the more age-worthy top wine simply called “Rocca di Frassinello.” However, there is so much more charm and immediate pleasure in “Le Sughere di Frassinello” that we always want to go back this wine. The 2009 bottling of “Le Sughere” earned 93 points in the Wine Advocate and a Top 100 mention in the Wine Spectator. Both publications gave the newly released 2010 “Le Sughere” 90pts while the Gamberro Rosso awarded the 2010 “Le Sughere” Tre Bicchieri, Italy’s highest award for wine. The blend hasn’t changed (50% Sangioveto, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 25% Merlot), but we found the 2010 to show more of its Bordeaux influence with polished black currant fruit alongside notes of cedar, sandalwood, and espresso. But of course, the sunshine of the Tuscan coast makes these elements warmer, richer, and more ready to enjoy.
