FORADORI 2010 TEROLDEGO VIGNETI DELLE DOLOMITI IGT ROTILIANO

ANTONIO GALLONI 92 POINTS- Strikingly beautiful wine, the 2010 Foradori is firing on all cylinders today. Sweet red berries, flowers and mint are some of the notes that emerge from the glass. The 2010 is a decidedly bright, focused wine laced with high-toned aromatics and flavors, all supported by an attractive vein of saline-infused minerality. This is one of the most elegant, refined wines I can remember tasting here. The Foradori is essentially the same wine that was previously marketed as Teroldego Rotaliano. Best of all, it is a fabulous value.

We have tremendous respect and admiration for Elisabetta Foradori, a woman of great integrity. Her winemaker father, died of cancer when she was 11 year-old. When she was 19, she took over as winemaker. Before Elisabetta took the helm, the Foradoris had planted vines for bulk wine production, and were very successful. Single-handedly in a 20-year effort, Elisabetta turned the winery around, making the vineyards bio dynamic and reviving a clone of the ancient grape, Teroldego. The Teroldego grape is genetically related to Syrah, and here in the northern Trentino’s mountain valleys sheer limestone cliffs, reaches its zenith in the subzone known as Campo Rotaliano. Elisabetta elevated Teroldego from a bulk wine to one that is found in some of the best wine lists in the world. A single mother of four, Elisabetta’s tireless work made her become one of Italy’s most influential winemakers: a woman who put Trentino wines on the map, and has become one of the country’s leading advocates for organic wine viticulture.

A few of our Hi-Time Wine Staff had the chance to meet Elisabetta at a trade tasting last year, and we were taken by her grace and elegance. Her wines are not that much different than her persona: strong yet elegant, joyful yet serious, easy-drinking yet fascinating. Her entry-level wine, the Teroldego is a dark, earthy wine with black and red fruits, serious yet light-footed. Her wine Sgarzon, is a deep red with an alpine freshness, layers of flowers, dark cherries, spice and dark minerality presented subtly and in precise detail. Her flagship wine, Granato, is a deep, dark concentrated wine made only from her best grapes. Granato is racy and silky with dark fruits, dark chocolate and some nuts with a long and beautiful finish. Teroldego may not have the same international cachet as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, but the Foradori wines are stunning.

Antonio Galloni of his publication “Vinous” writes of Elisabetta Foradori: “I was deeply struck with the wines I tasted at Foradori a few months ago. The winery is stripped down to the bare essentials, with terra cotta amphoras playing a greater role than in the past. Elisabetta Foradori is able to coax remarkable finesse from her Teroldego, the red grape that is native to this part of Trentino. The entry-level Foradori (previously labeled Teroldego Rotaliano) is fabulous and a great introduction to the estate... Readers should do whatever they can to check out these magnificent wines.”
