J. DUMANGIN (00) BRUT NATURE CUVEE HIPPOYLTE BLANCE DE PINOT NOIR

The Father son team of Jacky and Gilles Dumangin fastidiously run a tiny (12,500 cases per year) negoicant operation in the quaint village of Chigny-les-Rose situated on the northern flank of the Montagne de Reims. Gilles is quite strident about keeping his fruit in pristine condition. All of his grapes are picked into custom 18 kilograms crates (rather than the usual 50 kilogram containers) so as not bruise the grapes at the bottom. Also all of his vineyard sources are situated no further than seven kilometers from his old, beloved Coquard presses. In 2000 Gilles produced three single vineyard, single varietal Champagnes each named in honor of one of his ancestors. Each was aged in oak for a year and then bottle aged on the yeast for a decade before being disgorged in the spring of 2012 with no added sugar. All three Champagnes are outstanding, but we would probably have to give the edge to his striking Pinot Noir based “Hippolyte” bottling. From a vineyard in Rilly-la-Montagne, this is a majestic, richly textured Champagne that offers decadent poached cherry and strawberry flavors inter woven with a light touch of oak spice and brioche. Its lively acidity provides a nice lift and tone as well as assuring further development in the bottle.
