PASCAL DOQUET 02 BLANC DE BLANCS MESNIL GRAND CRU

This vintage mono cru represents the apex of the Doquet lineup and belongs in the exalted company of such Le Mesnil stars as Pierre Peter’s “Le Chetillons” and Salon. A bold statement to be sure, but this bubbly is just that good. This Champagne is made from Doquet’s oldest and most prized vineyard sites such as Les Migraines, whose vines were planted in 1929. Another contributor is Champ d’Alouettes; an excellent lieux-dit, this is situated mid-slope in the heart the Le Mesnil cru. One third of this Champagne was vinified in neutral wood for the primary fermentation and entire cuvée was blended and bottled with only a light filtration (no fining or cold stabilization). After its second fermentation, this 2002 was aged in the family’s cellar on the lees for over seven years. Noted Champagne authority, Peter Leim, gave this Champagne his highest 3 Star rating while inking this gushy review;

PETER LEIM (CHAMPAGNEGUIDE.NET) 3 STAR RATED - "This is simply gorgeous, showing such a clear and vivid picture of Mesnil chalk: for all the fame of the village, there are very few wines being made in Le Mesnil that express its character as profoundly as this one does. While it’s full and expansive on the palate, it maintains a classical Mesnil shape, feeling sleekly pointed and very long. It’s ripe and complex without really demonstrating distinct fruit flavors, such is the intensity with which the minerality is presented, and the subtlety and dimension of aroma on the finish is breathtaking. Further aging in the cellar will only do this good, as it still feels youthful and nervy, and compared with Doquet’s older vintages, I feel like this has a more vibrant energy and more potential for development in the future."
