DOMAINE EDEN 2011 CHARDONNAY SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS 750mL

Mount Eden has a long and glorious history. Originally planted by a man named Martin Ray, many of the original Mount Eden Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays are some of the best renditions California has ever produced! Flash-forward to the present, and the wines are just as good as they always were. In addition to their estate wines, they produce a second wine called Domaine Eden. Sourced from a well-maintained vineyard just one mile away from their estate, Mount Eden utilizes the same exacting methods for their estate wines: natural indigenous fermentations - both primary and secondary, French Burgundy barrels, no fining, filtration or any other manipulation.

This bottling is bigger and more full-bodied that its more expensive sibling, but is still distinctively Burgundian in its profile. Smoky, toasted oak is the fist aroma to hit the nose, followed by notes of almonds, citrus oil, lemon bar, apples, marshmallow, pastries and minerals. The wine is full-bodied yet held together by a nice frame of refreshing acidity; this will drink well now but should hold up nicely for another five years!

ANTONIO GALLONI 92 POINTS - "Domaine Eden is Mount Eden's sister estate. Proprietor Jeffrey Patterson takes a similar approach here, which is to say the wines are all done with native yeasts and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. This year, the Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are both delicious and good values, while the Pinot seems to suffer a bit in comparison, as it lacks the depth of the very best versions.

"Smoke, slate, apricot, spice and lemon peel nuances form an attractive fabric in the 2011 Chardonnay. Today, the aromatics are a bit closed, but with a little time in the glass the wine opens up beautifully. Power, minerality and energy are the signatures in a wine that delivers superb quality and pedigree for the money. The Domaine Eden Chardonnay is approximately 60% from the property itself and 40% deselected barrels from Mount Eden."
