DILLMANN 2005 TROCKENBEEREN AUSLESE 375ml

Riesling wines can age quite well. With the right levels of sugar and acidity, Rieslings can age for much longer than most would think (wines of up to 100 years of age, good wines mind you, are not uncommon; the townhall of Bremen, Germany stores wines, including Riesling-based wines, that date back to 1653!).

This Riesling is at a great point in its lifespan right now and should be optimum over the next 8-18 months. Trockenbeeren-Auslese (TBA) wines have the highest level of sugar in the Prädikatswein system utilized in German and Austrian wine classifications. This means that the grapes have been individually picked and are shrivelled with noble rot, often to the point of appearing like a raisin. This translates to a wine that's rich and full of flavor and depth.

The first thing that struck us is the color of this TBA. So dark! Dark caramel, medium-strength ice tea, medium-grade maple syrup in color, the nose alone is worth the price of admission on this bottling: aged honey comb, marzipan, vintage rum, a hint of diesel, plantain, ripe tropical fruits, spun sugar. The palate continues the show: viscous and rich, tastes of maderia, banana, stewed tree fruits, aged peach syrup, ripe apricot, kerosene and rhum agricole are awash in decent acidity, keeping everything uplifted uplifted and delicious, fresh and vigourous. This is a great opportunity to taste a quality aged Riesling at a fantastic price.
