It was also the first winery to cultivate Syrah in Colchagua. The winery eschews pumps and is built around gravity transfer, while the entire design is based around the Chinese concept of feng shui. Below lies the semi-circular cellar that houses up to 800 new French oak barrels, enjoying the Gregorian chants while they mature the wine. Despite the impressive facilities and quasi-ecclesiastical karma, Aurelio firmly believes that great wine is made in the vineyard rather than the winery. Still, when I questioned him about whether he is revising his modus operandi, he replied that, at least apropos his Chardonnay, like many in South America, he is decreasing the amount of oak in the wines while lifting the malolactic. This was generally a well turned out portfolio of wines that were far more consistent than others I tasted of similar size. While Montes is not beyond criticism, the entry-level wines represent a perfect introduction to Chilean wine at astoundingly good prices, while the premium bottles offer wines that should repay cellaring."

Don’t let the reasonable price of this wine fool you-- this is a wine you can cellar for up to a decade, enjoying it along the way. The nose is pleasantly sweet with notes of mixed red berries, plum and a rustic smokiness. The palate blends more fruit, cherry and plum, with a dollop of black pepper, black cherry cola and cedar wood, all buoyed by excellent tannins and structure. We found this one bloomed even more with a bit of air so open a half-hour before drinking. And, while it doesn’t affect the wine per se, Ralph Steadman art on the label is always a good thing, in our opinion.

After 3 years of searching for land in Chile, José Manuel settled on the remote and southerly Maule Valley of Chile, buying two parcels of old vines for his estate. These photos show you what he found—parcels of 100 year-old, ungrafted Cabernet Sauvignon planted next to parcels of Cabernet Franc that are up 120 years-old. It’s hard to pin-point something like the oldest Cabernet vines making wine today, but in our many years tasting wine and meeting winemakers, we’ve never heard of any Cab or Cab Franc this old. The “Centauri” uses these old vines as its base with 45% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon blended with 25% Merlot and 10% Carignane. The result is a uniquely Chilean blend that is smooth textured and brightly perfumed with scents of violet, lavender, black pepper, and star anise.
