Cuvelier Los Andes) and now Chile, with this limited production Pinot Noit out of the Casablanca Valley. This is a natural wine, which means it’s made with minimal winemaking intervention, using native/indigenous yeast and given minimum sulphur additions. A deep dark purple in color with a brilliant hue defines the wine’s visuals. The nose is exotic and definitely Pinot Noir offering up aromas of black cherry, allspice, orange peel and a touch of tree bark along with a touch and smokiness giving this a deep and complex aromatic profile on the nose. Medium fuller bodied this is ripe and silky with an impressive core of vibrant and lifted sweet dark cherry and dark plum fruit flavors that are supple in texture, with a lovely fruit and savory interplay backed with fine tuned, sleek tannins sending this to an impressive and long finish. Endowed with engaging fruit purity and complimentary spice this is very serious Pinot Noir for the money. This represents outstanding value.

bright acidity and a racy acidity that goes on for minutes with the fruit. Dry austerity at the end gives it incredible character. This was fermented and aged in second and third year oak. Ten months. A triumph. A reductive structured style. Screw cap. Drink now."

Chile is a land of soaring Andes mountains, a mild Mediterranean climate, and fine wines. From the premium wine producing regions of Chile come the best grapes, and it is here that Viña Errázuriz has been producing the highest quality Chilean wines for more than 130 years.

Don Maximiano Errázuriz founded Viña Errázuriz in 1870 in the Valle de Aconcagua, 100 kms north of the capital city, Santiago. Recognizing that this valley, with its cool, rainy winters, hot, dry summers and moist Pacific Ocean breezes, was ideal for growing grapes, Don Maximiano sent for the finest clones from France and with tenacity and perseverance transformed this barren land into a world-class vineyard.

Today, the tradition of quality lives on with Don Maximiano’s descendant, Eduardo Chadwick. Eduardo is the fifth generation of his family to be involved in the wine business. Eduardo has overseen the modernization of the winemaking technology at this historic estate while maintaining a distinct identity for its wines. Dedicated to producing estate grown wines of superior quality, Errázuriz has built a reputation as the “Best of Chile”.

more about MOVI on indievintner.com for the full story. We’re going to focus on the wine, which happens to be an incredible dry-farmed, 70+ years old-vine Carignan out of the Maule Valley, the largest and one of the oldest wine valleys in Chile. And such a wine this is! The nose starts with spicy, peppery briar and cedar woods that almost immediately lead to sweet, dark fruits: boysenberry and framboises. This is a jammy, thick, serious nose that’s also trés sexy. The palate continues the conversation of fruit and spice with ribbons of silky, sweet, smooth and spice-filled tendrils of flavor that coat the tongue: jammy preserves of dark, ripe red berry fruits, dusty cherries and fresh-pressed cherry juice with a touch of raspberry for character. This is unctuous, real, awesome wine-- this is Carignan? WOW. Just WOW.

EQ displays a cunning balance of rounded fruit and rich terroir that brings up nice memories of Burgundian Pinots (southern Savigny-lès-Beaune came to mind). Raspberry and cherry notes blend with a spicy/brambly mélange and more dark/black berry fruits to make for a very lovely nose. The palate starts softly with more fruit (cherry/berry), easy-going vanillins and light earthiness and is just a joy to taste-- the palate-weight and viscosity are rounded and rich as is the overall balance and feel of this wine. Think Burgundian fruit meets new world Chilean terroir-- and the meeting is a huge success.

Two years ago we discovered the Viña Ventisquero line from Chile. At the time we wrote, “WOW, what a lineup-- pure, multi-layered wines at unbeatable values,” adding several wines across many price points. At a recent trade show, we tasted the full line again and knew it was time to buy up, but this time we were most impressed with “the best of the best” selections from the “Grey” Gran Riserva tier and a few prestige bottlings. Ventisquero owns over 4,000 acres across top growing areas in Chile, from Casablanca, Maipo, Apalta, and more. The “Grey” wines represent the best blocks in the best vineyard from Ventisquero’s vast holdings. Winemaker Felipe Tosso is a star in Chile, but for these higher tier wines benefit from the added assistance of consultant John Duval, famed as the man entrusted to make Penfolds Grange for over 20 years. This collection is impressive and drinks well above their price tags that seem downright modest in the American market.

across the country for decades. This mistake persisted until the 1990s, but Carmenere is tricky and slow to ripen, nothing like Merlot in the vineyard. Ventisquero told us they waited a full month after picking Cabernet to pick their Carmenere. Their patience with this temperamental grape shows with a bold and fiery wine. Blackcurrant and blackberry fruit plays off fresh cracked peppercorn, sweet tobacco and black chocolate.

vineyard site is rocky and dramatic, chiseled row by row into the hillside. The result is another level of winemaking in Chile-- yes, the wine is full and dark; suffused with blueberry, pepper, spice and black olive. However, the nobility of the Syrah grape is also in notes of dried herbs, dried flowers, delicate red fruit and a haunting prettiness underneath the all that heft. Some Syrahs miss these subtler notes, but John Duval brings it all together beautifully in this wine.
