more about MOVI on indievintner.com for the full story. We’re going to focus on the wine, which happens to be an incredible dry-farmed, 70+ years old-vine Carignan out of the Maule Valley, the largest and one of the oldest wine valleys in Chile. And such a wine this is! The nose starts with spicy, peppery briar and cedar woods that almost immediately lead to sweet, dark fruits: boysenberry and framboises. This is a jammy, thick, serious nose that’s also trés sexy. The palate continues the conversation of fruit and spice with ribbons of silky, sweet, smooth and spice-filled tendrils of flavor that coat the tongue: jammy preserves of dark, ripe red berry fruits, dusty cherries and fresh-pressed cherry juice with a touch of raspberry for character. This is unctuous, real, awesome wine-- this is Carignan? WOW. Just WOW.

WINE ADVOCATE 91 POINTS - "The 2009 Centauri Red Blend is composed of 45% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot, with the balance Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 12 months in French oak. In the glass it is full-bodied, dense, layered, and long. Relatively forward, it can be approached now but will drink well for a decade. It is an outstanding value."

José Manuel Ortega from O. Fournier seems to be just about everywhere in the Spanish speaking world. After 3 years of searching for land in Chile, José Manuel settled on the remote and southerly Maule Valley of Chile, buying two parcels of old vines for his estate. These photos show you what he found—parcels of 100 year-old, ungrafted Cabernet Sauvignon planted next to parcels of Cabernet Franc that are up 120 years-old. It’s hard to pin-point something like the oldest Cabernet vines making wine today, but in our many years tasting wine and meeting winemakers, we’ve never heard of any Cab or Cab Franc this old. The “Centauri” uses these old vines as its base with 45% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon blended with 25% Merlot and 10% Carignane. The result is a uniquely Chilean blend that is smooth textured and brightly perfumed with scents of violet, lavender, black pepper, and star anise.

Tabali’s “Talinay” is sourced from the only vineyard in Chile planted atop 100% limestone, a site that sits five miles from the Pacific Ocean. The Limari Valley is about six hours north of Santiago by car, and is becoming known as one of Chile’s most important cool-climate wine regions-- especially when it comes to Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Pinot Noir. Chile really does have huge diversity in terms of terroir, which we’re finally starting to see now that corporate winery ownership is on the downturn and a young, much more liberal generation of winemakers is coming of age/getting access to great land. Chile is getting very exciting!
