the 2006, or a more obvious, immediate wine like the 2007. Instead, it reveals its charms only reluctantly. Layers of fruit hide beneath a powerful wall of tannin. The wine remains intensely mineral and equally primary, with little in the way of aromatic development. It is a shame to taste this today, as the wine clearly needs a number of years before it begins showing its true pedigree. Readers in search of immediate gratification should probably pass. Those in search of fine, cellar worthy Chianti Classico will adore the 2008 Rancia. Clean, saline notes frame the exquisite finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2023."

San Giusto is a reference-point estate that encapsulates so many of the artisan values that make the best wines of Tuscany so appealing. The Baroncole remains San Giusto’s least consistent wine, but all of the other reds are flying very high these days. The sweet San Giusto is an extreme wine, so it is only natural that some years are better than others.

For a long time Selvapiana was a summer residence for the Florentine bishops. It then belonged to a series of rich Florentine merchant families including the Scalandroni. Purchased in 1827 by Michele Giuntini Selvapiana, the estate now covers an area of 240 hectares, of which 45 are devoted to vineyards and 31 to olives. Five generations of the Giuntini family have now lived on the estate.
The rigor and care devoted to producing this wine make Bucerchiale (a 100% Sangiovese made for the first time in 1979) one of the finest wines in the Rufina area. Following malolactic fermentation, it is matured in barriques and medium-sized sessile oak casks. It is aged in wood for 15 months and then blended together in steel tanks prior to bottling.
