s estate vineyards at the foot of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch.
The vineyards are farmed organically, and everything is done by hand. Grapes for the FMC are hand selected from a single block of low yielding Chenin bush vines planted in 1974. Each vine is pruned to 5 or 6 shoots, with 1 bunch per shoot. They are planted in Clovelly — a deep yellow sandy soil — on south-southwest-facing slopes.

Bottling took place in February 2013 and disgorgement in July 2013. Shimmering dark with a very fine perlage its aromas present a veritable basket of raspberries, strawberries, and red currant aromas joined by top notes of roses and vanilla. The pristine palate mirrors the red fruit bouquet but is bolstered by undertones of citrus and limestone. A primo patio quaffer if there ever was one.

Bertrand Jousset is a passionate, larger than life (he looks to be about six foot six) Loire Valley vigneron. Bertrand and his wife Lise are part of a vanguard of young wine producers that are revitalizing the Mount Louis wine scene. Located in Touraine on the left bank of the Loire River opposite from Vouvray, Mount Louis features old vines and relatively inexpensive land making it something of a Mecca for a new generation of winery startups. Loire Valley natives, the Joussets had always dreamed of working with Chenin Blanc. That dream seemed far off until suddenly in 2003 they happened upon a small, run-down estate for rent that offered great potential. The property featured an historic ridge top chateau with three levels to facilitate gravity flow winemaking. More importantly, the property possessed 26 acres of old vines averaging 60 years of age. After nearly a decade of moonlighting and scrimping, the couple was able to assume ownership of the estate. Their vineyards are divided into 25 garden-sized parcels planted primarily to Chenin Blanc rounded out with small holdings of Cabernet Franc, Gamay, Grolleau, and Chardonnay. Bertrand mainly overseas the grape farming which is strictly organic. He also follows an aggressive pruning schedule to limit yields and takes extra time and care to field sort his fruit at harvest to ensure that only the healthiest grapes make it to the crusher. The winery is Lise’s relm where she follows a non-intervention regime that includes fermentation with native yeasts, minimal application of SO2, and clarification without filtration.

yeast for their first and secondary fermentations and are bottled with a sweet dosage. This 100% Chenin Blanc cuvee was initially fermented in a combination of used 300L and 400L barrels and vats. Bottling took place in June 2013 and disgorgement in January 2014. The result is an exceedingly fragrant bubbly that exudes aromas of pink grapefruit, crème fraiche, and green melons. Fine bubbles amplify its bright citrus profile while the mouthwatering finish adds subtle almond pastry notions to the mix. A revelation in sophisticated refreshment!

The fruit aromas flavors of this still wine are more muted than the above bubblies (as one would expect) but over time this white opens nicely to reveal hints of nectarine, white peach and pippin apples on the nose. In the mouth this wine is taught, yet well textured with an old-vine density with leads to a long inter play of juicy orchard fruits and deep seated mineral flavors on the back palate. A serious, yet versatile wine for summer's lighter fare.

This wine has been one of our perennial favorites for years. It is a rather unconventional blend, but once you taste the flavors and the refreshing qualities of the wine, we know you’ll be hooked just as we have been!

Pine Ridge’s winemaker Michael Beaulac likes the Chenin Blanc (79% of the blend) harvested early to maintain its bright acidity, while Viognier (21% of the blend) brings its signature fragrant bouquet. The 2013 bottling of this distinctive blend opens with a dazzling spectrum of fruit and floral aromas, from crisp white peach, honeyed pear and sweet mango, to touches of fresh jasmine blossom and white chai tea. Filled with bright and juicy fruits, the palate flaunts flavors of succulent white nectarine, candied pineapple, green fig and subtle grapefruit. The crisp and slightly off-dry flavor profile lasts well through the clean and refreshing finish.

Jacky Blot. The production begins as 40-80 year-old vines grown in the appellation of Montlouis (just across the river from its Chenin-driven sibling, Vouvray). The result? A lively and delicate pétillant that dances across the palate with its ‘fuzzy’ bubbles – a kinder, gentler fizz in comparison to Champagne’s more defined and delineated pop. The bouquet is fresh and tickles the nose with white blossoms, apples and pear. A stylish and refined palate of pear, soft citrus elements and the barest nuance of almond blossom and pippin dash across the tongue. A crisp, clean and revitalizing finish leaves you wanting that next sip and before you know it you will be popping a second bottle. A tremendous value that is perfect for all manner of brunch fare, lounging Sundays and celebrations of all sorts.

on the finish. Lush, but defined and pure. Drink now through 2014."

This is as complex and rich a Chenin Blanc as we’ve had-- from pretty much anywhere. French in style, the South African terroir shows through brilliantly. A little bit about the process: for his white wines, all bunches are pressed, left for 24 hours to settle nicely, then racked straight into 225-liter Burgundian barrels where the alcoholic and malolactic fermentation will occur (this wine spent 9 months in 3rd fill French oak). All of Durand’s whites are kept on clean lees with regular battonage and soft filtration before bottling. The nose on Kama (transated from Sanskrit as ‘pleasure of the senses’) is kaleidoscopic: notes of wet stone, white florals, lemon grass, baking spices, stone fruits, a touch of petroleum and hints of creaminess captivated us. The palate was as deep with gorgeous, lush viscousity kept perfectly aloft with brilliant acidity. Flavors of white peach and mixed stone fruits, minerality, a touch of sweet spice balanced atop neutral oak, all seductively silky in texture, resolve in a flourish of flavorful depth, wondrous length and sated desires. Only 60 cases for USA.

People who sell French oak to wineries are incisive tasters and highly knowledgeable about winemaking. They have the rare opportunity to work with dozens of different houses and to taste many wines as informal consultants. So it wasn't so big a leap for Christophe Durand, who moved to Cape Town from France in 1995 to sell French oak barrels, to jump to the other side and become a winemaker. He bought a vineyard in the Simonsberg ward of South Africa's most famous wine area, Stellenbosch.

While Simonsberg’s Vins D’Orrance may be a relatively young wine estate, its French born owner and winemaker, Christophe Durand, certainly made the local wine fraternity sit up and take notice when one of his wines, the 2009 Cuvée Annais Chardonnay, was chosen to be served at the royal wedding of Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco. This “amazing” white wine was chosen as a tribute to Princess Charlene and her home country, and perfectly complemented the royal reception.
