However, it's still highly expressive of Avize clay, feeling dark, brooding and savory in tone. It combines power with finesse, veering almost towards red-fruit aromas in its concentrated ripeness yet maintaining a controlled, tautly-wound focus all the way through the long, stony finish. Its a powerfully terroir-driven wine, and should be terrific with sufficient post-disgorgement aging. Last tasted: 11/12."

This bottle was disgorged only a couple weeks before I tasted it, dosed at slightly over 3 g/l, yet it's already showing a sleek harmony and richly expressive fragrance. Its fruit flavors lie in the green spectrum—fresh pear, apple, green citrus—although it also feels concentrated and full in body on the palate. It persists on the finish with excellent length, its vibrant, expansive aromas intertwined with saline minerality, and it should become even more complex with a few years in the cellar. Last tasted: 11/12."

Pascal Agrapart has an unsurpassed, dare we say fanatical passion to create Champagnes that present high resolution taste portraits of their Côte des Blancs terroir. For this roster we have selected his aptly named Cuvée Minéral because it makes a fabulous flavor statement for the man and his mission. It is a 50/50 blend of 40-year- old parcels in Avize and Cramant. The Avize portion was fermented in tank while the Cramant base wine was vinified in old oak barrels. Everything went through full malolactic fermentation with no filtration. Dosage was a minimal 4g/l. Australian Champagne maven Tyson Stelzer's remarks are spot on: “…It’s a delightfully expressive wine that hits high notes of wonderful freshness and purity, within a style of reverberating concentration, substance and creamy, textual mouthfeel. White nectarine leads out, layered with honey, brioche and nougat, finishing with hints of nutmeg. Pascal Agrapart describes it as a vertical wine with dark acidity, but to me the acidity is as fresh and bright as daylight, with a softness of early morning light filtered through fine mist. 95 Points.”

of equal parts Avizoises and Minéral, and made without chaptalization or dosage, using all indigenous yeasts for both the first and second fermentations. It feels broad and visceral, with a mouthfilling fragrance and a certain sweetness of fruit, and in its burnished, textural richness and expansive depth, it's more reminiscent of Vénus than of any of the estate's other cuvées—both of these were aged on cork and released without dosage, which could also be a factor in this regard. It's brilliantly pure in its clarity and expression, and while you can't say that it's more or less so than other Agrapart wines, it's a different kind of purity, one that's more individual and somehow more corporeal in character. It has a lot of finesse, supported and enlivened by its minerality, and it has a great deal to say: this is a wine to spend some time with, and one that every champagne aficionado should experience."

for wine grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1978, Donald Long and his 28 year old son David began the epic job of building roads, clearing land and finally planting wine grapes. Although David lacked a formal viticultural education, he learned hands-on by working in the vineyards and cellars of local wineries such as the Chappellet and Joseph Phelps. The first vintage of Chardonnay was harvested in 1985, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon in the nineties. As his experience and knowledge of the land grew, David learned the ability of these hills to grow the very finest wine grapes. Today, with the help of a highly insightful team, David Arthur continues to cultivate rich concentrated wine grapes that in turn help them craft distinctive and memorable wines.

A pale straw color with light golden green hues opens for aromas of baked apple, pineapple and guava. Following are hints of citrus blossom, toasted oak and lemon custard. The palate is rich, and long throughout with a subtle minerality. The finish demonstrates verve and persistence of stone fruit and pineapple pear. Best from 2012 to 2017.
