of equal parts Avizoises and Minéral, and made without chaptalization or dosage, using all indigenous yeasts for both the first and second fermentations. It feels broad and visceral, with a mouthfilling fragrance and a certain sweetness of fruit, and in its burnished, textural richness and expansive depth, it's more reminiscent of Vénus than of any of the estate's other cuvées—both of these were aged on cork and released without dosage, which could also be a factor in this regard. It's brilliantly pure in its clarity and expression, and while you can't say that it's more or less so than other Agrapart wines, it's a different kind of purity, one that's more individual and somehow more corporeal in character. It has a lot of finesse, supported and enlivened by its minerality, and it has a great deal to say: this is a wine to spend some time with, and one that every champagne aficionado should experience."

from a horse-plowed parcel in the Avize vineyard of La Fosse, this is savory and intensely chalk-driven, deemphasizing fruit in favor of a pure transmission of soil character. It’s sleek and racy, complemented by a silky, elegant texture, and it unfolds with remarkable complexity and grace on the palate, feeling vivid, precise and vibrant. The saline notes of iodine and oyster shell persist with outstanding length, adding to the impression of refinement and finesse. Last tasted: 11/13."

s rare to find these varieties planted in a grand cru terroir as exalted as Avize, and this wine clearly derives a finesse, complexity and depth of flavor from its site. The quirky characters of the heirloom varieties are apparent, notably the alpine herbalness of Arbanne and the glassy, exotic notes of Meslier, but they’re all integrated together in a suave, silky package, feeling elegant and refined. There’s a terrific sense of resonance and vitality on the palate, and the flavors persist with outstanding length and poise. While there are a number of Champagnes being made from these varieties today, Agrapart’s is surely one of the finest. Last tasted: 11/13."

Pinot Noir from Avenay Val d'Or. It's made up of equal parts 2011 and 2010, and it feels saline and savory under ripe notes of citrus and orchard fruits, its pinot noir content seemingly more evident in body and texture than in overt flavor. Brisk acidity provides a lively balance and structure, as well as fragrant length on the finish. Last tasted: 11/13." -Peter Leim

This non dosed Brut (except the reserve component) was all vinified in secondhand barrels, most of which are old, 228-liter barriques purchased from Chablis. The wines stay in barrel for about six months before being blended and bottled: "The idea is not to mark the wines with the wood," says chef de cave Nicolas Jaeger, "but to give them more structure, more finesse and length." This bottling is a blend of 41 percent chardonnay, 32 percent Pinot Noir and 27 percent Meunier, with 20 percent of the total made up of reserve wines.

more recently, biodynamic farming. Beaufort's takes a non-interventionalist approach to the winemaking. The wines are left on the lees for long periods prior to being released, and disgorgement dates of various lots are clearly indicated. This is clearly a high risk, high reward philosophy that leads highly individualistic Champagnes that are never boring and are often superb. This bottling is made from 100% estate grown Pinot Noir.

It is a favorite of many musicians and has been popping up in celebrity circles and music videos. It is made exclusively from Premier and Grand Cru-rated villages in three different terroirs: Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs. The blend is 40% Chardonnay, 40%, Pinot Noir, and 20% Pinot Meunier. The original de Brignac name was registered by the Cattier family in the late 1940s or early 50s, according to Jean-Jacques Cattier. It was chosen at that time by his mother, who had been reading a novel featuring a character named de Brignac. In naming the new Champagne itself, Cattier states those involved came up with Armand, it sounded kind of noble.

We have all been taught that French Champagne is produced from any combination of three grapes, namely Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay. For the vast majority of Champagne Read More...
this is indeed the case. It rarely mentioned, however, that the AOC regulations allow exceptions to this tripartite formula, and permit the use of four additional “historic” varietals; Arbanne, Petit Meslier, Fromemteau (a.k.a. Pinot Gris) and Pinot Blanc. They say, variety is the spice of life and over the years we have had some intriguing heirloom grape Champagnes from Moutard, Laherte and Pierre Gerbais, but it is the Aubry twins, Pierre and Philippe, that have done the most with these arcane grapes. “If the varieties were planted in the first place our forebears must have had a reason!” they say. The distinctive and alluring flavors of their “Campanae Veteres Vites” (i.e. “the old vines of the countyside”) cuvee have been turning heads now for more than a decade. 2009 was a very warm vintage in Champagne and these conditions enabled the brothers to create their showiest and probably their best ever edition of “Campaneae Veteres Vites”. If you are curious to experience the exotic flavor spectrum of pre-phylloxera Champagne, this Aubry makes a scintillating time machine. The notes below are those of respected Champagne authority Peter Leim who gave it his highest (3 Star) rating.

3 STARS PETER LEIM CHAMGAGNEGUIDE.NET - "This is a blend of 25 percent Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris (co-planted and fermented together), 20 percent Petit Meslier, 20 percent Pinot Noir, 15 percent Arbanne, 15 percent Chardonnay and five percent Meunier. Its glossy flavors of passion fruit, mango, guava and cassis are forward and voluptuous, although while this is luscious in feel, it's neither heavy nor overly sweet (especially not at 3 g/l of dosage). It's unusually multi-faceted, blending its fruit flavors with a complex herbalness and a detailed minerality-there's the sense that an immense array of components are coming together in perfect harmony, building towards a long and vibrant finish. As usual with this cuvée, the arcane varieties lend an element of originality and surprise, and it gives the impression that there's a lot more waiting to be discovered here in future tastings. Last tasted: 3/14."

ANTONIO GALLONI 92 POINTS - "The 2009 Brut Le Nombre d’Or Campanae Veteres Vites is another striking wine from Aubry. Lemon peel, almonds, white flowers and spices are laced together in a Champagne endowed with a real sense of phenolic weight and verticality. Many of the current releases from Aubry are finely cut this year, but the Le Nombre d’Or Campanae Veteres Vites is a wine that is very much tied to the ground. The 2009 is 25% Pinot Blanc/Fromenteau, 20% Petit Meslier, 15% Arbanne, 15% Chardonnay, 5% Pinot Meunier and 20% Pinot Noir. Bottled February 2014. Dosage is 3 grams per liter."

rocks are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass as this refined Champagne shows off its impeccable class and total pedigree. The Premier Cru is 45% Pinot Meunier, 25% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 5% Arbanne, Petit Meslier and Fromenteau. The high percentage of red grapes is felt in the wine’s breadth, while the aromas and flavors remain fresh, vibrant and beautifully nuanced throughout. This is a fabulous entry-level offering."

from 1998, which was vinified without malolactic and aged in new oak for two years, while the second is a Villedommange pinot noir from 1999 that saw full malo, aged in secondhand oak for one year. The two were blended and bottled in 2000, in Aubry’s low-pressure “sablé” style of four atmospheres, and the subsequent cuvée was aged on its lees for 151 months before disgorgement in early 2013. A year later, it’s even more complex and complete than it was when it was first released, showing a resonant, expansive fragrance and a silky finesse. It expresses the nobility of both wood and lees aging, and its dense aromas are strikingly umami in tone, persisting with exceptional length and detail. This is a stunning wine, and while it’s not easy to find, it’s worth making a special search. Last tasted: 3/14."

2 1/2 STARS TERRY THEISE CATALOG-"THE MOST PROFOUND AND REMARKABLE CHAMPAGNE IN THIS OFFERING...
The wine is explosively salty, with mind-warping minerality. It’s a first for them, a new cuvée. It consists of 1998 Chard, aged in new wood for “two seasons,” no malo, and a “sablé,” i.e. 4 atmospheres rather than 6. There’s also 1999 PN that did malo, in 4-year wood for “one season.” It went en tirage in 2000 with “agrafé” (a cork, not a crown cap), and was disgorged in February 2013. Barely any dosage. Total production: 1000 bottles. I’d had a disappointing bottle of praised-to-the-skies (and criminally expensive) Cuvée Winston Churchill a couple nights earlier, and as soon as I sniffed this baby I felt the gravelly darkness the Pol Roger seemed to have been striving for. My image-vision was of an old, stoic man who’s spent his life working outside, and when he comes in for lunch the smells of earth and smoke follow him. The wine is adamantly long, with a keen forest-y finish. The empty glass smells like pigeon and summer truffle. This is the very opposite of frivolous. It speaks to a depth the Aubrys don’t let you see otherwise. It is extraordinary, meaningful wine."
