Pinot Noir and Meunier (pressed together), 15 percent Chardonnay, 20 percent Arbanne, 20 percent Petit Meslier and ten percent of Meunier vinified as red wine. It shows a sleekly focused depth, its dark flavors of cherry and raspberry staining the palate in their intensity. The vivid red-fruit fragrance persists on the finish with tremendous length, detail and poise, saturated with stony minerality, and the balance at 2.5 g/l of dosage is impeccable, allowing this to feel vinous and energetic."

We are excited about this offering because we love nothing more than offering killer deals on great wines. While not as flashy or fashionable as some of its Grandes Marques brethren, Bollinger nevertheless possesses a legion of savvy devotees that is surpassed only by that of Krug’s. As with Krug’s Grand Cuvee, Bollinger’s reputation is anchored by their consistently splendid multi-vintage Brut Special. This is a particularly nice rendition and it is further notable because it is the first release of Special Cuvee packaged in a swanky new bottle patterned after one the company used in the 1840s. Disgorged this past summer, 45% of the blend is from 2008, while 50% is from 2007, with the rest being composed of older vintages aged in magnum.
Jacques Bollinger and Paul-Joseph Renaudin founded Bollinger in 1829. However, it was really the widow (yes, another dynamic Champagne widow) Lilly Bollinger, who guided the firm from 1941 to 1971, that is most responsible for the lofty reputation that the firm enjoys today. By all accounts this grande dame was an indefatigable and astute leader that left no stone unturned in the pursuit of bolstering the excellence of her Champagnes. Ghislain de Montgolfier, a great great grandson of Jacques Bollinger, took charge of the house from 1994 to 2008. Today, Jérôme Philipon is managing director, while Mathieu Kauffmann , who has been with the house since 2001, is Bollinger’s brilliant chef de cave. Bollinger’s 395 acres of vines provide for roughly two-thirds of the house’s needs, which permits greater control over style and quality.

Drink now through2014.Given its value, style and grace it was an easy call to place this November Champagne of the Month on this bestof list. Champagne R.H. Coutier is located in the celebrated Montagne de Reims village of Ambonnay, where the Coutierfamily has lived since 1619. As we suggested last month, the 30% Chardonnay component is very expressive and works togive this value priced Brut a verve and subtlety that is lacking in most other Montagne de Reims Champagnes. Here then is a classy, albeit mouth-filling Champagne whose red berry Pinot Noir character takes a back seat to savory notions ofbreadfruit, lemon curd, toasted grains and honey."

PETER LEIM CHAMPAGNE GUIDE.NET 3 STARS - "Roederer was notably successful in this difficult vintage, and the 2005 Cristal is outstanding, demonstrating all of the positive attributes of the year while avoiding its faults. It's blended from 55 percent pinot noir and 45 percent chardonnay, and while it has an elevated sense of richness indicative of the vintage, it's remarkably elegant and graceful, already showing a terrific complexity of flavor and a classical refinement. Thanks to its bold fruit aromas, it's unusually approachable for a young Cristal, but it will take time to reveal all of its facets, and it should continue to develop over the next several decades. Last tasted: 3/12."
