This non dosed Brut (except the reserve component) was all vinified in secondhand barrels, most of which are old, 228-liter barriques purchased from Chablis. The wines stay in barrel for about six months before being blended and bottled: "The idea is not to mark the wines with the wood," says chef de cave Nicolas Jaeger, "but to give them more structure, more finesse and length." This bottling is a blend of 41 percent chardonnay, 32 percent Pinot Noir and 27 percent Meunier, with 20 percent of the total made up of reserve wines.

Lemon peel, strawberry pith, fresh ciabatta dough. The center is downreaching and creamy. In the background, a faint, brine accent persists, remnant of freshly shucked Kumumoto oysters. It is a favorite of many musicians and has been popping up in celebrity circles and music videos. It is made exclusively from Premier and Grand Cru-rated villages in three different terroirs: Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs. The blend is 40% Chardonnay, 40%, Pinot Noir, and 20% Pinot Meunier. The original de Brignac name was registered by the Cattier family in the late 1940s or early 50s, according to Jean-Jacques Cattier. It was chosen at that time by his mother, who had been reading a novel featuring a character named de Brignac. In naming the new Champagne itself, Cattier states those involved came up with Armand, it sounded kind of noble.

We have all been taught that French Champagne is produced from any combination of three grapes, namely Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay. For the vast majority of Champagne Read More...
this is indeed the case. It rarely mentioned, however, that the AOC regulations allow exceptions to this tripartite formula, and permit the use of four additional “historic” varietals; Arbanne, Petit Meslier, Fromemteau (a.k.a. Pinot Gris) and Pinot Blanc. They say, variety is the spice of life and over the years we have had some intriguing heirloom grape Champagnes from Moutard, Laherte and Pierre Gerbais, but it is the Aubry twins, Pierre and Philippe, that have done the most with these arcane grapes. “If the varieties were planted in the first place our forebears must have had a reason!” they say. The distinctive and alluring flavors of their “Campanae Veteres Vites” (i.e. “the old vines of the countyside”) cuvee have been turning heads now for more than a decade. 2009 was a very warm vintage in Champagne and these conditions enabled the brothers to create their showiest and probably their best ever edition of “Campaneae Veteres Vites”. If you are curious to experience the exotic flavor spectrum of pre-phylloxera Champagne, this Aubry makes a scintillating time machine. The notes below are those of respected Champagne authority Peter Leim who gave it his highest (3 Star) rating.

3 STARS PETER LEIM CHAMGAGNEGUIDE.NET - "This is a blend of 25 percent Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris (co-planted and fermented together), 20 percent Petit Meslier, 20 percent Pinot Noir, 15 percent Arbanne, 15 percent Chardonnay and five percent Meunier. Its glossy flavors of passion fruit, mango, guava and cassis are forward and voluptuous, although while this is luscious in feel, it's neither heavy nor overly sweet (especially not at 3 g/l of dosage). It's unusually multi-faceted, blending its fruit flavors with a complex herbalness and a detailed minerality-there's the sense that an immense array of components are coming together in perfect harmony, building towards a long and vibrant finish. As usual with this cuvée, the arcane varieties lend an element of originality and surprise, and it gives the impression that there's a lot more waiting to be discovered here in future tastings. Last tasted: 3/14."

ANTONIO GALLONI 92 POINTS - "The 2009 Brut Le Nombre d’Or Campanae Veteres Vites is another striking wine from Aubry. Lemon peel, almonds, white flowers and spices are laced together in a Champagne endowed with a real sense of phenolic weight and verticality. Many of the current releases from Aubry are finely cut this year, but the Le Nombre d’Or Campanae Veteres Vites is a wine that is very much tied to the ground. The 2009 is 25% Pinot Blanc/Fromenteau, 20% Petit Meslier, 15% Arbanne, 15% Chardonnay, 5% Pinot Meunier and 20% Pinot Noir. Bottled February 2014. Dosage is 3 grams per liter."

in the chilly confines of the 12th Century La Cave Reine Jeanne for a year and half. This Cremant displays a rich straw color with active bubble streams that release fragrant aromas of golden delicious apples, toasted almonds, sourdough bread and nutmeg. In the mouth one encounters a honeyed orchard fruit vinosite (from low yield grapes) that is framed by ample acidity while subtle Jurassic limestone inflections round out the finish. This Benoit Mulin is finished with a moderate (8g/l) dosage that is slightly higher than that of Tissot's estate-bottled Cremants lending it a broader appeal though it still manages to remain faithful to its Jura terrior. This is a very nifty, exciting bubbly that could well be our favorite fizz from anywhere for under fifteen dollars.

red cherry and citrus underlined by a stony, savory minerality. Last tasted: 2/13."
ANTONIO GALONI 92 POINTS-"The NV (2006) Extra Brut Le Cran is one of the creamier, more oxidative wines of the range, largely because of the six years it spent on its lees. Dried pears, crushed flowers, spices, licorice and almonds meld together gracefully in this effortless, polished Champagne. The 2006 Le Cran is very much a wine of textural volume and breadth. Relative to the other wines in the range, the 2006 Le Cran feels a bit heavy. My sense is that today's wines are a bit more polished. The 2006 is equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot. This bottle was disgorged in January 2013. Dosage was 2 grams per liter."

been to the wine’s benefit: oftentimes when older wines are stored in a perpetual cuvée, particularly in wood, they can rapidly become heavily burnished and patinated. By slightly increasing the emphasis on the younger wine, Bérêche has succeeded in expressing the complexity and character of the older wines while imparting more freshness and energy to the overall blend. This release, based on 2009 and containing wines dating back to 1985, is the finest version I’ve tasted yet, deftly navigating a balance between a broad, expansive richness and a lively, elegant structure. It’s noticeably finer in texture and tone than previous releases of this cuvée have been, retaining a savory, mature complexity yet feeling refined and cleanly precise. Last tasted: 9/14."

yellow chalky notes, some lighter floral elements too. The palate is super dry (dosage at 3-4g) and there’s a silky, sherbet-like texture, smooth, fine and long. The citrus flavours give way to the driving surging acidity, thunderous acidity, really driving and powerful. The finish twists very slowly through to light-toasted cashew fruit flavours, but lemon citrus prevails. This is thrilling Champagne. Disgorged 22nd October, 2013. Drink from 2016."

95 POINTS JOHN GILMAN-VIEW FROM THE CELLAR-"The 2002 Bollinger R.D. is the finest young vintage of this bottling that I have ever had the pleasure to taste. The nose is still fairly tight and youthful, but also deep and pure, wafting from the glass in a mélange of tart orange, apple, stony minerality, sourdough bread, caraway seed, smokiness and a nice topnote of white flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and nascently complex, with a rock solid core, utterly refined mousse, crisp acids and stellar length and grip on the perfectly balanced and very refined finish. I love the synthesis here of the depth and ripe purity of the 2002 vintage and the very tightly-knit and precise structural chassis of the wine. A beautiful wine in the making, the 2002 Bollinger R.D. is certainly drinkable today, but it will really blossom with three or four more years of bottle age."

WINERY NOTES -The launch of the 2002 vintage marks 50 years of Bollinger R.D., Madame Bollinger’s great idea which she turned into reality with the 1952 vintage.

60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay drawn from 23 crus: 71% Grands Crus and 29% Premier Crus. More than a decade of cellar maturation on the yeast.

JANCIS ROBINSON - 19 POINTS (19 out of 20)
60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay. 23 crus of which 71% are Grands Crus and the rest Premiers Crus. Dosage under 4 g/l. Very firm, savoury nose with Bollinger's trademark fungi. Very powerfully so but with excellent acidity and lift on the palate. This is touted as a 50th anniversary offering because the first RD (Recently Disgorged) vintage released on the UK market was the 1952, in 1967 (so it was three years older than this 2002). It was launched at the same time as the 1953 on the French and Swiss markets and the 1955 on the American and Italian markets. A nod to British taste for seriously mature champagne? This wine should not be served too cool. It has real weight - though does not taste heavy. I loved it on first release as Grande Annee and it is less austere now. A bit mellower and more open though still with the deep throat salve sensation on the finish.

We are excited about this offering because we love nothing more than offering killer deals on great wines. While not as flashy or fashionable as some of its Grandes Marques brethren, Bollinger nevertheless possesses a legion of savvy devotees that is surpassed only by that of Krug’s. As with Krug’s Grand Cuvee, Bollinger’s reputation is anchored by their consistently splendid multi-vintage Brut Special. This is a particularly nice rendition and it is further notable because it is the first release of Special Cuvee packaged in a swanky new bottle patterned after one the company used in the 1840s. Disgorged this past summer, 45% of the blend is from 2008, while 50% is from 2007, with the rest being composed of older vintages aged in magnum.

Jacques Bollinger and Paul-Joseph Renaudin founded Bollinger in 1829. However, it was really the widow (yes, another dynamic Champagne widow) Lilly Bollinger, who guided the firm from 1941 to 1971, that is most responsible for the lofty reputation that the firm enjoys today. By all accounts this grande dame was an indefatigable and astute leader that left no stone unturned in the pursuit of bolstering the excellence of her Champagnes. Ghislain de Montgolfier, a great great grandson of Jacques Bollinger, took charge of the house from 1994 to 2008. Today, Jérôme Philipon is managing director, while Mathieu Kauffmann , who has been with the house since 2001, is Bollinger’s brilliant chef de cave. Bollinger’s 395 acres of vines provide for roughly two-thirds of the house’s needs, which permits greater control over style and quality.
