was helping his father plant vines when a tractor overturned and rolled onto him, causing the loss of a leg. Blessed with a generous sense of humor, he has been affectionately known amongst local farmers as “Houtbeen” (Pegleg) Basson. This is a medium-bodied wine with sumptuous red and black fruits. The color is medium ruby with a bouquet of strawberry preserves, plum and mulberry, which is reflected on the palate. The finish is medium in length and quite pleasing, leaving you ready for more. Wine Spectator says of this wine, “Bright and very peppery, with bouncy tobacco and spice-infused fig fruit flavors. Lively finish.” Adored wine critic and author Jancis Robinson also writes of Pegleg as a successful expression of Carignan.

more about MOVI on indievintner.com for the full story. We’re going to focus on the wine, which happens to be an incredible dry-farmed, 70+ years old-vine Carignan out of the Maule Valley, the largest and one of the oldest wine valleys in Chile. And such a wine this is! The nose starts with spicy, peppery briar and cedar woods that almost immediately lead to sweet, dark fruits: boysenberry and framboises. This is a jammy, thick, serious nose that’s also trés sexy. The palate continues the conversation of fruit and spice with ribbons of silky, sweet, smooth and spice-filled tendrils of flavor that coat the tongue: jammy preserves of dark, ripe red berry fruits, dusty cherries and fresh-pressed cherry juice with a touch of raspberry for character. This is unctuous, real, awesome wine-- this is Carignan? WOW. Just WOW.

his wines but sold everything in bulk to local négociants. Fifteen years ago, a Burgundian winemaker happened to be in Oupia, tasted Iché’s wines, and was so enthused that he convinced Iché to bottle and market his production. The results were excellent and earned a well-deserved “...bravo to proprietor André Iché...” from Robert Parker. André passed away in late 2007. His daugher, Marie-Pierre, currently runs the estate. She’s been working with oenologist Laurent Batlle since 2008, who continues to make the wine -in his own words- “André’s way.”

Les Hérétiques is 100% Carignan and a definite shining star of a wine. The nose is simply gorgeous: layers of dark florals and forward sweet fruits (cassis, blackberry, boysenberry) lead to a layer of spice, earthiness and cured meats. The palate is loaded upfront with silky tannins as black and blue fruits tango across the tongue. The ripe fruits are balanced by ample acidity and a nice spice element near the mid-palate. Finish is sweet, long and perfect. Carignan can be a tough grape on its own but when done right, as it is here, you get a wine rife with finesse, class and great taste.

pruned Carignan (a varietal commonly found in the Rhône Valley of France) located in Mendocino’s Redwood Valley. The combination of vine age, an extended growing season, and tougher soil conspire to produce complex, intense wines. The wine was cold fermented in stainless steel tanks, finished bone dry, and completed a long, slow malolactic fermentation which balanced the naturally high acidity. The resulting wine is intensely aromatic with rose petals, pomegranate, watermelon, and cranberry. Good acidity ensures a fresh, clean, vivacious profile, and keeps the mouth watering for more. By far, one of the best domestic rosés of the year!
