oak spice and dark volcanic tones of crushed granite and smoke. Given the proven track record of this wine, I'd expect this vintage to age for 15 to 20 years without a hitch. The 2012 vintage was only slightly warmer than average and those ripe fruit flavors do a lot to round out and soften the firm tannic backbone of the wine. There's a notable point of acidity that helps the wine to achieve an impressive sense of balance. Elena Fucci has another successful edition of Titolo for us to enjoy over the years to come."

Elena Fucci’s 2012 Aglianico Del Vulture is absolutely gorgeous. Deep ruby in color fading to a garnet rim. The nose is full and complex, with notes of roses, red berries and grilled herbs along with smoke and baking spices. On the palate, the wine is fresh, vibrant and full-bodied with flavors of red currants, cherry, rosemary, tobacco, cinnamon and vanilla. The balance of fruit, acidity and structure is excellent culminating with a very long finish. This wine is youthful and will only get better with time.

We are always interested in exploring wines of character or those which are unique. We especially like relatively obscure and distinctive varietals, because we are that store which stocks those kind of wines. On March 16th, winemaker Elena Fucci visited us at the store and surprised us by bringing a vertical of her Titolo wines. Her family’s vineyard is small (less than 15 acres) and Elena focuses on a single wine only-Aglianico Del Vulture. Production is also quite small and only 100 cases are brought into California. We tasted the 2009 -2012 vintages of her wine, which was a treat.

We were impressed by the passion Elena has for her family and her wine. She is from the youngest of four generations of her family to farm their plot of land. Her 89 year old grandfather, Salvatore is still involved and wakes up at 5:00 AM each morning to go out in the fields and tend to the vines. The vines have an average age of 65 years, which results in low yields and high quality.

Aglianico is a unique grape found in only a few appellations in southern Italy, most notably in the appellations of Taurasi and Aglianico Del Vulture. The grapes are an intense blue color, yielding a wine which can be quite structured and capable of aging. Elena’s vineyard is located at the highest altitude in the appellation at 600 meters and the vines benefit from true dormancy in winter when they shut down as protection against the snow that blankets the vineyard.

The soil is something you can barely call soil as it consists mainly of charcoal gray volcanic rock; the remnants of eruptions from Mount Vulture. The marriage of Aglianico grapes with the volcanic soils produce a visceral minerality. A smoky undertone frames the red fruit, tobacco and incense notes characteristic of these wines, which are sometimes referred to as the “Barolo of the South.”

The wines of Elena Fucci all exhibited “typicity”, which is a word wine geeks like us use to describe the degree to which a wine reflects the characteristic flavors and structure of the grape variety from which it was produced. In other words, these wines were excellent examples of what a quality wine made from Aglianico should taste like. In particular, we came away with an appreciation for the finesse and approachability of the Elena Fucci wines. They were not walled off by tannins, although they were certainly age-worthy and showed how the progression of time makes these wines even more beautiful. The current release is the 2012 vintage, which should be fun to watch evolve over the next decade.

As Elena said,” "We only work with our own grapes, which we grow with care. This is because we want to obtain a preci

Soulful and refined from this estate. This is a magical wine from Southern Italy."

The Galardi Terra di Lavoro is considered one of the top Italian wines by many wine critics, and it is Campania’s top rated wine year after year. The previous 14 vintages of Galardi Terra di Lavoro have all been rated 93 to 99 points by Robert Parker with 8 vintages rated 97 points or higher. The 2011 vintage has not yet been reviewed by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, but the 2011 was recently rated by James Suckling at 97 points. The Terra di Lavoro is a blend of 80% Aglianico and 20% Piedirosso grown organically on the slopes of the Roccamonfina Volcano. Only a few thousand bottles are produced each year.

Our notes - this wine has complex aromas of dark fruits, black olives, game and herbs with a smoky, volcanic ash undertone. It is structured and full-bodied with deep blackberry fruit, dark plums, and cured meat culminating in a long finish. This is a fascinating, complex wine which should be decanted for 1-2 hours if opened in the short term and will age for many years. It pairs well with game, red meat and other rich dishes.

s distinctive indigenous varietals, with Falanghina being one of its specialties.
Sporting a lovely green-gold color, the Cantina’s Falanghina offers an especially intense, perfumed nose of freesia, pear and melon. In the mouth the wine’s pineapple and pear fruit characters announce themselves before segueing to a distinctive, vibrant mid-palate of perfumed minerals, lemon and wintergreen. The Cantina’s Falanghina finishes clean and zesty with reprises of the wine’s tropical fruit nuances, refreshing green herbal overtones, and dissolved mineral impressions. Stunningly delicious and offering refreshment rare in wines from such southern origins.

This is a splendid southern Italian white to be enjoyed over the coming two years with grilled or sautéed prawns, calamari, grilled ahi tuna, dishes featuring fresh mozzarella, and eggplant lasagna.

the most famous single site in Campania for both the famed DOCGs of Taurasi and Fiano di Avelino. The story of “Campo Re” takes a tricky turn when the Mastroberardino family split the business in the 1990s, with Walter Mastroberadino taking the historic vineyards while his cousin retained the brand name. However the “Campo Re” of today was the original “Radici” vineyard of from many years ago that built the Mastroberdino family’s reputation on the top tier. This special single vineyard bottling shows creamy lemon-chiffon fruit with acacia and a mellow citrusy-edge, like mandarin orange and bergamot. Elements of honey, nutmeg spice and toasty oak lend this Fiano a depth that reminds us of a fine white Burgundy. There is also plenty of volcanic minerality laced throughout the mid-palate sure to please the terroir-hunters and purists. We tasted the rare “Campo Re” Fiano at a special tasting of Italian wines more than a year ago and we’ve been thinking about it ever since.
