and 7% Petit Verdot – offers a terrific example of the combination of richness and textural polish with lift and energy that Washington State vineyards, and especially this one, can supply. Both blond and smoky Latakia tobaccos join black raspberry, purple plum and cassis, which are shadowed by their high-toned distilled essences. Hints of vanilla and nutmeg – perhaps from barrel (ca. 40% new); or perhaps part and parcel of Champoux fruit – are subtly complementary, while a saline savor grows in this beauty’s long finish, stimulating the salivary glands as well as the urge to take another sip. Expect this to excel for a decade. Camarda bottled his first Champoux vineyard designate from 1999, a pure Cabernet. Once fruit from the other cepages became available, he began bottling a blend of them all."

Dancing Hares) was invited to become Arietta’s new winemaker, and worked alongside former partner and winemaker John Kongsgaard for a year before taking the reins in the summer of 2006.

Arietta Red Wine Variation One is a blend of Merlot and Syrah, also from the Hudson Vineyards. The Syrah, from Hudson's Hermitage selection grown in gravel unusual in the Carneros, is co-fermented with the Merlot to give the blend a wild and penetrating quality.

Variation One is a Napa Valley original. The plum and licorice aromas of Merlot blend imperceptibly with the forest floor, wild game qualities attributable to the Syrah in a wine without antecedent anywhere in the world. The vinification, barrel ageing, and bottling are similar to the Arietta H Block wine. Variation One may be served young, especially with wilder dishes, but the powerful, if supple, tannin will support its evolution in bottle for at least ten years.

The core of the wine is Cabernet Sauvignon farmed on lower Howell Mountain by renowned Napa vineyard manager David Abreu. The meticulous practices employed by Abreu assure perfectly ripe fruit, and the particular site, soil, and exposure to sun produce a sensationally seductive and expressive wine.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS - "Andy Erickson has done a great job with these new releases from Arietta. Arietta’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon bursts from the glass with juicy dark cherries, smoke, crushed flowers and melted road tar. Hints of mocha, espresso and plums develop later, adding a darker register that is highly appealing. Round, supple and totally enveloping, the 2010 should drink beautifully over the next decade, give or take. The 2010 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Meteor vineyard in Coombsville. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025."

in a manner that shared the land with the bears, mountain lions, wild turkeys, etc. Fast-forward to today, and they are now one of the most talked-about labels in the Napa Valley. Their wines are stunning, balanced, and full of flavor!

The Obsidian bottling is their blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Aged in 100% French oak from their estate, only 450 cases were produced! Deep crimson hues reflecting its full, rich body, this elegant wine gets your attention immediately. The opening aromatics of earthy spices and dried floral notes give way to black cherry and mocha. An initial tease of pomegranate and cranberry move through to expansive mid-palate flavors of toasted macadamia nuts, dry tobacco, vanilla bean, ripe blackberries, dark stone fruits and a hint of eucalyptus. The finish is unexpectedly smooth and long for the big, bold structure of this wine. Supple, finely grained tannins with well-integrated acidity and fruit balance make this wine approachable now; yet promise a long, rewarding, cellar life.

ended up achieving both! While Richard Arrowood has since sold the winery, it is good to see that the new owners are carrying on his same attention to detail that Richard had, and the winemaking staff work hard to keep Arrowood Winery at the top of its game! The grapes come from primarily organic or sustainably-farmed vineyards along the benches, hillsides and mountains of Sonoma County (Monte Rosso is one of those vineyards). Fruit forward, bright aromas of raspberries and cherries are intermixed with cola and subtle oak. On the palate, the tannins are full yet velvety, and the wine shows flavors of cocoa, raspberries, black currants, anise and a hint of minerals. This wine shows a remarkable balance for the pricepoint!

for wine grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1978, Donald Long and his 28 year old son David began the epic job of building roads, clearing land and finally planting wine grapes. Although David lacked a formal viticultural education, he learned hands-on by working in the vineyards and cellars of local wineries such as the Chappellet and Joseph Phelps. The first vintage of Chardonnay was harvested in 1985, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon in the nineties. A s his experience and knowledge of the land grew, David learned the ability of these hills to grow the very finest wine grapes. Today, with the help of a highly insightful team, David Arthur continues to cultivate rich concentrated wine grapes that in turn help them craft distinctive and memorable wines.

Every year the winery has the opportunity to take the best of the best grapes and let them stand by themselves, they call this Elevation 1147. Elevation 1147 is always 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and a core percentage comes from the same block each year. The wine style is that of no other from David Arthur in that the structure is massive and full palate. The name Elevation 1147 comes from their location high atop Pritchard Hill. Elevation 1147 is the flagship Wine of David Arthur Vineyards and thus is consistently highly allocated.

The wine is an amazingly dense and dark ruby color with hints of magenta. Layered aromas of blackberry compote, espresso bean, dark chocolate, brandied cherries and hints of spicy earth tones like sassafras and star anise. There are hints of lavender and graphite followed by tobacco and black tea. The entry is big bold and massive with chewy tannins woven together with wild-brambly dark fruits, focused minerality and a firm finish.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 95+ POINTS - "I was deeply impressed with the wines I tasted at David Arthur this year. Winemaker Nile Zacherle has done a brilliant job with these new and upcoming releases. The David Arthur style is all about richness without excess heaviness. In addition to the wines below, I also tasted a Nebbiolo from the 2011 harvest that is easily one of the most interesting California Nebbiolos I have ever come across.

"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Elevation 1147 is going to require serious patience. It boasts stunning depth and power, but very much in the context of the house style, which is to say the Elevation 1147 remains a wine of exquisite elegance and finesse. This dazzling Cabernet Sauvignon caresses every corner of the palate with layers of beautifully delineated fruit. The 2010 is an exceptionally polished wine loaded with potential. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030.

Predominately Cabernet Sauvignon, and with a little Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, this wine has adark ruby color showcases freshly crushed blackberries and raspberries followed by brown sugar, candy licorice and dark chocolate. Spicy toasted oak tones are layered in with notes of espresso bean and toffee. The entry is rich and focused with bold mid palate tannins, dark cherry-cassis and minerality. "The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Three Acre is racy, gorgeous and beautifully balanced. Dark raspberries, menthol and licorice are supported by firm yet well-integrated tannins. In this vintage, the Three Acre needs a few years for the tannins to soften. The energy, vibrancy and sheer appeal will prove to be totally irresistible once the wine comes together a bit more in bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030."

WINE SPECTATOR 92 POINTS - "Notably firm and oaky, with a strong cedary presence, this is a powerful, vibrant expression of dark berry, spice, fresh earth, pepper and raspberry. Ends with gutsy, chewy tannins. Patience required. Best from 2014 through 2024."

Meritaggio is the brainchild of the Long brothers. Wanting to fulfill his desire of producing a fine Meritage blend, David set out to find clones of the five classic Bordeaux varietals. On his travels, he came across Sangiovese, which stole the spotlight from any Malbec he had ever tasted. Bob had the brilliance to name the wine “Meritaggio” in honor of Sangiovese’s Italian Heritage.

A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Sangiovese, 6% Merlot, 3% Petite Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, this densely colored dark ruby red wine is packed with a complexity of aromas beginning with baked cherry, plum and cassis. Thin layers of earth tones- wild sage- mint and tobacco. The palate is full and concentrated in the front and middle palate. Layered with baked fruit cake, wild currants-blackberries with a long chewy finish and a persistence of Sangiovese tannin.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - " I was deeply impressed with the wines I tasted at David Arthur this year. "David Arthur’s 2010 Red Wine Meritaggio Estate is drop-dead gorgeous. Juicy dark cherries, flowers, menthol and violets burst from the glass. The 2010 has quite a bit more freshness and vibrancy than the 2009. The darker tonality of fruit and overall structure here are simply compelling. This is a fabulous showing. Philippe Melka (Lail, Gemstone, Dana). Here's the skinny on this property; over the winter and sping of 2010, we came across Kristine Ashe at several trade tastings. Everytime we sampled her wines, they were at the top of our lists. Heck, at the Oakville tasting, we felt her Cabernet was as good as many of the TRUE cult wines! If that's not an endorsement, then don't bother reading any further!

The modern wine is crafted in the old way – completely by hand. The journey starts in the family's Oakville estate vineyard, where midnight harvests, hand de-stemming and barrel fermentation allows them to unlock diverse aromatics, complex flavors and a purity of fruit that cannot be achieved by mechanical methods. The elegance of this Cabernet shines through with soft, refined tannins and luminous fruit.

ROBERT PARKER'S THE WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - "The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Entre-Nous Estate opens with a deeply pitched, spiced bouquet. Mocha, dark red berries and flowers are some of the notes that flesh out in the glass. The 2009 boasts gorgeous length on the palate. Only a very slight dryness on the finish keeps the score from going higher. This is a super-impressive showing from a producer who is new to me. The 2010 is 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024."
