of Napa Valley is a Rodeo Drive, of sorts, as the producers on this hill have names like Bryant, David Arthur, Continuum, and Ovid. Yet, Chappellet is still regarded as the reference point for Cabernet Sauvignon produced from this mountain.

The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon has been Chappellet's flagship wine for more than three decades. It is a benchmark for the long-lived hillside wines of the Napa Valley; full of structure and aging potential, yet seductively forward in its concentrated varietal character. The dry, rocky soils of Pritchard Hill produce small, intensely flavorful grapes. Crop thinning allows for full, even ripening and further elevates flavor complexity.

This wine offers all of the color, concentration and complexity of a classic Cabernet Sauvignon from Pritchard Hill. The nose displays, rich, vivid layers of dark berry, cherry, and sweet oak, underscored by background notes of bay leaf, sage, chocolate and anise. The mouthfeel is powerful, yet rounded, with a silky presence that allows the wine to gracefully support its size, and its voluptuous ripe cherry, berry and plum flavors. Spicy oak notes of cinnamon, vanilla and roasted coffee add nuance and depth, while youthful tannins give a fine grip to the palate providing the structure for long-term aging.

of the Napa Valley, and the wines are made by the exceptionally talented Martha McClellan (also of Sloan and Levy & McClellan). What makes the Checkerboard wines rise above others at this price point is the shear intensity, harmony, balance, and individuality, along with that je ne sais quoi. We feel this wine is of the same quality as other superstars like Caymus Special Selection, Continuum, Dalla Valle, Lewis, or even Peter Michael.

The Kings Row bottling is a second wine of Checkerboard, but it is important to know that the vineyards are virtually the same as Checkerboard, and the wine is made with the same barrel program, oak treatment and aging. The only difference here is the blend, which is completed after the final blend is finished for Checkerboard. A blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, and 3% Petite Verdot, the wine is even more complex and structured than the 2008, very well balanced with black fruit, milk chocolate, oak spice and a ripe, supple, lush texture, finishing with tighter tannins.

grapes like! His vineyards are, quite literally, right next door to the O’Shaughnessy vineyards, so it seemed like a natural step for Sean Capiaux (who has worked at Peter Michael, Jordan, and Pine Ridge) to make the wines.

Riva di Levante translates to "steep bank where the sun rises". Grapes are sourced from a 3 acre block on the eastern slope, where the elevation peaks at 2000 feet. The soil is a deep red loam and is the source behind the name "Cimarossa" (red hill top).

ROBERT PARKER'S THE WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - "The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Riva di Levante Vineyard is a big, powerful wine bursting with dark fruit, spices, licorice and tobacco. It boasts gorgeous depth and richness in a surprisingly supple style for Howell Mountain. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023."

grapes like! His vineyards are, quite literally, right next door to the O’Shaughnessy vineyards, and his winemaker is Mia Klein, who has made wine at Dalla Valle.

Riva di Ponente translates to 'steep bank where the sun sets'. This 1.4 acre vineyard block with full western exposure is Dino's warmest block due to the afternoon sun. The soil is a volcanic ash, which is one of the most ideal soild for Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

A wine of vibrancy with aromas of sweet baking spices, Mexican chocolate and red chilies, this wine shows hints of saltwater taffy with a hint of cedar. Nicely rounded with integrated tannins and a shotgun start oak flavors linger along with the fruit flavors. Only 137 cases produced.

planted a number of vineyards. Philippe Melka is the consulting winemaker. In broad terms, Lede’s 2009s are made in a more finessed style than the 2010s, which come across as more powerful and structured. Both vintages are terrific, but very different in style.

"The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District shows off considerable focus and depth, not to mention terrific overall balance. Dark plums, cherries, spices, licorice and cassis are some of the notes that flow from this long, pure wine. Today the tannins are a bit compact, but bottle age should help to some degree. The 2009 is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024."

Coho is the shared aspiration of Brooks Painter and Gary Lipp to produce flavorful, balanced wines. Grown in select cool-climate vineyards, Coho wines emphasize fruit purity and vitality. Read More...
Brooks and Gary combined experience working for California wineries totals almost sixty years, both involved in all aspects of their craft, acquiring the skills to bottle passion. Coho’s name might seem curious as it doesn’t invoke images of vineyards or wine, but the salmon embodies an innate wisdom so essential to understanding ourselves and our environment. "Headwaters" is a Bordeaux blend of three varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon (66%) Merlot (32%) and 2% Petite Verdot. Most of the source vineyards for this wine are in the Coombsville area of the Napa Valley; this makes for a rich yet balanced red blend with dense ruby/purple color. Great layers of red currants, wild berry and dried dark fruits with a hint of licorice lead to notes of toasted oak and very well integrated tannins with a long fruit-forward finish.

"This is a unique and generous red wine, just as Colby is a unique and generous child. I blended five different grape varieties to make a red that's juicy and velvety smooth, with rich fruit flavors and a soft finish. Colby Red is a wine for sheer delicious enjoyment. While it's a great wine with food, it tastes best in the company of good friends and family, savored with an appreciation of the gifts each moment brings." -Winemaker Daryl Groom.

We've long been fans of Columbia Crest, one of Washington State's premiere wineries, known for both handcrafted, superior-quality small-lot wines and affordable, everyday Washington quaffers. Read More...
So where does "H3" fall? Well, the price says everyday and affordable but, we must confess, the juice in the bottle has us leaning toward the superior side of the above descriptor-- it's a fantastic Cabernet Sauvignon that we believe people will fall in love with, especially as a "go to" Cab for the holidays.

The nose is a nice blend of sweet brown spices, black cherry, a little cherry cola and a touch of vanilla-- very approachable. The palate keeps with the cherry fruit theme and adds a touch of cedar and subtle dusty earth, all lifted by a nice layer of acidity. The finish is brief but tasty. With a latitude similar to Bordeaux, and long days of sunshine leading to excellent ripeness of fruit, clearly it's not just the horses who've found heaven in the hills of Washington.

This is not a case of deja vu. If you follow our newsletter, you may recall that a Columbia Crest wine was our wine of the month last year at this time (the ‘09 H3 Cab, to be precise). Read More...
This year, their red blend “Les Chevaux” (French for ‘the horses’) hit the home stretch well ahead of the dozen other worthy wines to take the purse.

Chevaux is a blend comprised of 80% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Syrah. Winemaker Juan Muñoz Oca was raised in Mendoza, Argentina and worked with his grandfather, cellar master at Bodegas Toso winery, at a young age. Juan joined Columbia Crest in 2003 and was named head winemaker in 2011. Prior to 2011 he was dedicated to the winery’s red wine program where he worked alongside Ray Einberger whose 2005 Reserve Cab became the first Washington wine to be named ‘Wine of the Year’ by Wine Spectator in 2009. Why Columbia Crest? Oca states: “The perfect grape-growing climate, the best viticultural practices, and a people committed to crafting the best bottle of wine vintage after vintage is what Columbia Crest’s winemaking is all about.”

The nose starts with Christmas spices, vanilla and cardamom, then adds a layer of cherry/plum/pomegranate reduction; a very attractive, inviting nose. The palate leads off with sweet cherry fruit and forward tannins as baking spices, Kriek lambic flavors and dark cocoa notes add depth and balance. The finish is lengthy and tasty as the big tannins slowly recede, leaving reverberations of red fruits, spice and a mineral earthiness to meander around the mouth for a few minutes more.

WINE SPECTATOR 90 POINTS - "Supple and spicy, with a plush-textured, dark-hued, blackberry-rich mouthful lingering against creamy oak notes on the long and polished finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Drink now through 2017."
