were added to create a fruit-forward profile and enhanced mouth feel. The wine was aged for 12 months in a combination of American and French oak barrels to build structure and complexity in the blend. This Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich, juicy red that features aromas of dark cherry, black currants, coffee, and subtle hints of spice. These flavors are complemented by a touch of spicy oak and emphasized by refined tannins.

This wine is dense and tremendously focused, with a wonderful nose and palate of cedar, blueberry, saddle leather and white pepper. The finish showcases a perfect balance of acid, tannin and sweet toasted oak. Meticulous, detail oriented winemaking and complete attention to detail has produced a wine of tremendous presence and complexity that must be tasted to be believed. WINERY

vineyards planted in 1982, the Madrona Ranch. This cuvée usually contains at least 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and one of the highest percentages of Cabernet Franc, ranging from 33% to 45%. Tiny quantities of Petit Verdot and Merlot are also added, depending on how they fared in any given vintage. Last year I mentioned that the 2011 Proprietary Red Madrona Ranch was one of the rare Abreu wines that showed a little herbaceousness, but that has completely aged out. There is now a forest floor intensity to this full-bodied, opaque purple-colored 2011. After spending 26 months in 100% new oak, it exhibits great fruit, concentration and intensity. The fact that Abreu and Grimes do malolactic in their new oak barrels seems to integrate the wood better than at many wineries. It is certainly a key to understanding the wine’s complexity. It displays lots of Christmas fruitcake, coffee, chocolate and spice box notes, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and sweet tannin. Drink it over the next 15+ years."

ANTONIO GALLONI 95 POINTS - "Abreu's 2011 Madrona Ranch possesses remarkable textural depth and richness, especially for the year. Rich, layered and super-expressive, the 2011 graces the palate with a compelling interplay of bright fruit, expressive aromatics and lovely breadth. New leather, crushed flowers and mint add nuance on the close."

deep garnet color with a nose that reveals a panoply of aromas: blueberry liquor, dark red fruits, black cherry, with subtle notes of baking spices and cedar. A small percentage of beautifully ripe Malbec and Petite Verdot contribute hints of plum and leather respectively. These abundant fruit characteristics, along with a touch of vanilla, reveal themselves in the mouth with multiple layers of flavor that coat the mouth and continue to a long finish. The tannins are superfine and silky, carrying the fruit along the palate from entry to finish without ever being obtrusive. Both the Malbec and Petite Verdot further enhance the classical texture.

development of intensely flavored fruit. Cold soaked for 48 hours prior to fermentation for a gentle extraction of color and flavor, the wine was racked to a combination of French (70%) and American (30%) oak barrels, where it aged for 18 months prior to blending and bottling. Small lots of Malbec and Syrah were incorporated into the final blend for added dimension.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon presents multidimensional aromas of plum, raspberry, tobacco and toasted oak. Rounded flavors of black cherry and black currant are interwoven with earthier hints of olive, mint, black tea and spice. Chewy tannins set the tone for a full, rich finish.

have everything; texture, richness, balance and structure. Chris continues to think 2007 is his best vintage (we tasted his 2007 Sorrella during the visit and it’s an incredible wine) to date, and he describes 2012 as a “bigger 2008.” Nevertheless, I think these 2012s will rival the 2007s in another 4-5 years. In addition, they have a new vineyard near Two Blondes called Pollard Vineyard that’s planted to Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. I visited earlier this year and the 2013s had not been put together, so I’ll review those (possibly from barrel) next year. These are great wines."

"One of the more backwards, structured efforts, the 2012 Champoux Vineyard is a blend of 64% Cabernet Franc, 22% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Sauvignon that was raised in 35% new French oak. Full-bodied, serious and loaded with tannin, it offers impressive currant and darker fruits, tobacco leaf and crushed rock like aromas and flavors that continue to gain depth and richness with time in the glass. It should hit full maturity at around age 10, and nicely for a decade or more after that."

"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon from Michael Mondavi's Animo label is laced with ash, plum, graphite, smoke, incense, tobacco and licorice. With time in the glass, the fruit begins to emerge in a lush, full-bodied wine with considerable richness for the year. The Atlas Peak tannins are there, but they are nearly buried by the pure extract and concentration of the fruit. Graphite, smoke, white pepper add complexity on the close. This is an especially juicy style for the year, but it works. Drinking window: 2016 - 2026."

are a mix of Tufa, iron rich red clay, and abundant rocky areas. Even though proprietors Ron and Susan Krausz planted their first vines on the property in 1998, it wasn't until several years later that their first "true" vintage was bottled.

With the help of the talented and famous winemaker Philippe Melka, Ron and Susan tasted many wines and blends from their property for many years. Each year, they listened to which techniques in the vineyard translated to better wine. Again, each year, they fine-tuned these practices until they were sure the vineyard was well-established, trained properly, and were producing world-class wines.

Enter Sam Kaplan; Arkenstone Vineyard Manager and Winemaker since their commercial release. Sam has, since day one at Arkenstone, farmed the vineyards organically. Sam is exceptionally knowledgeable, and not only uses Arkenstone's state-of-the-art winemaking facility to its fullest, but he also knows when to be "hands off", and let the vineyard's own characteristics shine; terroir, if you will.

The 2010 NVD bottling is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 22 months in oak. The deep purple body with a magenta rim gives way to a nose of chocolate, blackberry, red licorice, fresh tobacco and graphite. Ripe black cherry and plum along with fig and white chocolate move through to ripe red cherry, blackberry, sage and gardenia on the mid palate. Brambleberry, coffee, chocolate, lavender and cinnamon linger for a very long finish. This vibrant, well-balanced wine is youthful, yet extremely enjoyable to drink right now. Only 500 cases were produced!

Cheval Blanc. The couple began their romance while traveling through Bordeaux in the mid 1980's, and have since found their dreams come true in being able to live and make wine in Napa Valley. They sought out their Coombsville vineyard property with an eye to producing top-quality Bordeaux blend wines from Napa Valley. This property is organically farmed.

One of the rising stars of Napa Valley winemaking, Jennifer Williams, was named Winemaker for Arrow & Branch in April 2011. After years of working with and learning from legendary winemakers such as Rosemary Cakebread, Francoise Peschon, and the Novak family, Jennifer now brings her outstanding talents and experience to Arrow & Branch. In 2002, Williams joined Araujo and Spottswoode as a harvest intern, splitting her time between these two great winemaking estates. At Spottswoode, Jennifer was drawn to the philosophy of organic and sustainable farming, which Tony Soter had introduced in 1985. Following harvest, she joined their team full time, working under guru David Abreu in the fields and Rosemary Cakebread in the winery. In 2004, with a deeper understanding of the estate vineyard, she took over as Vineyard Manager and was Spottswoode’s Winemaker from 2006 to 2011. The San Francisco Chronicle named Jennifer a “Winemaker to Watch” in 2007.

The Arrow & Branch 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of fruit from to ov the very best vineyards in the Napa Valley; Lewelling Vineyard in St. Helena and Stagecoach Vineyard in the eastern mountains overlooking the valley. Aged for 20 months in 75% new French oak, this is a dense and balanced wine from the start, exhibiting a warm, dark, brooding entry, and has aromas laced with chocolate, cinnamon, and cedar. It proudly exhibits distinct dried herbal notes characteristic of classic Cabernet, followed by flavors of plum, black cherry, and wet stone. With generous and plush tannins, it opens rich and broad across the palate and ends with a long and structured finish. With decanting this wine is immediately appealing, but patient cellaring of 10-15 years will further enhance the beauty of the remarkable wine.

for wine grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1978, Donald Long and his 28 year old son David began the epic job of building roads, clearing land and finally planting wine grapes. Although David lacked a formal viticultural education, he learned hands-on by working in the vineyards and cellars of local wineries such as the Chappellet and Joseph Phelps. The first vintage of Chardonnay was harvested in 1985, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon in the nineties. A s his experience and knowledge of the land grew, David learned the ability of these hills to grow the very finest wine grapes. Today, with the help of a highly insightful team, David Arthur continues to cultivate rich concentrated wine grapes that in turn help them craft distinctive and memorable wines.

Every year the winery has the opportunity to take the best of the best grapes and let them stand by themselves, they call this Elevation 1147. Elevation 1147 is always 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and a core percentage comes from the same block each year. The wine style is that of no other from David Arthur in that the structure is massive and full palate. The name Elevation 1147 comes from their location high atop Pritchard Hill. Elevation 1147 is the flagship Wine of David Arthur Vineyards and thus is consistently highly allocated.

ANTONIO GALLONI 92 POINTS - "Winemaker Nile Zacherle has done a terrific job with these new and upcoming releases. If there is one word to define the David Arthur Cabernets it is: precise. The wines capture the essence of these Pritchard Hill sites, with a decidedly mid-weight, classic sense of structure by Napa Valley standards. David Arthur is a bit different from most other Napa Valley wineries in that several of the wines reflect the distinctly Italianate aesthetic of proprietor David Long. The Meritaggio is a Sangiovese based blend, while the estate's Nebbiolo is intriguing. But in the end, Cabernet Sauvignon rules the day on the slopes of Pritchard Hill."

"David Arthur's 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Elevation 1147 is quite floral and lifted in style with lovely aromatic complexity and nuance, but less depth and texture than the Estate Old Vine. It will be interesting to see if the 2012 fleshes out in bottle. Today, it is a bit on the light side, which, among other things, exposes the tannin. My sense is that the Elevation 1147 will always remain an ethereal, slightly fleeting Cabernet Sauvignon. Drinking window: 2015 - 2024."

Meritaggio is the brainchild of the Long brothers. Wanting to fulfill his desire of producing a fine Meritage blend, David set out to find clones of the five classic Bordeaux varietals. On his travels, he came across Sangiovese, which stole the spotlight from any Malbec he had ever tasted. Bob had the brilliance to name the wine “Meritaggio” in honor of Sangiovese’s Italian Heritage. This dark ruby red wine blend is bright with aromas of bramble red fruits, baked cherry plum and cassis, then layers of earth toneswild sage- bay leaf and tobacco. The palate is focused and concentrated in the middle palate layered with baked fruit cake, black tea and spicy pepper notes, and then finishes with polished-fine grain tannin.

"David Arthur's 2011 Meritaggio Estate is a deep ruby red color with slightly violet edges offers bright aromas of baked cherry, plum and blackberry as well as notes of red licorice candy and black tea. The palate is soft and plush on the entry with a fleshy mid palate and fine grained tannins on finish. A clean yet light minerality on palate offers a long persistent finish. Best from 2015 to 2020.
