CLOS MANOU 2009 CUVEE 1850 PRE-PHYLLOXERA 100% MERLOT

Clos Manou “Cuvée 1850” is a garage wine of extraordinary quaility produced in the northern Medoc, and is representative of the modern, fruit-forward, concentrated wines that are coming from the left bank of Bordeaux and competing with the famous classified growths. The grapes used to produced “Cuvée 1850” come from very old vines planted in the 1850s and not touched by the phylloxera disease that ravaged France’s vineyards in the 19th century. Because of the rarity of pre-phylloxera vines only 600 bottles of “Cuvee 1850” are produced. It’s hand-harvested with three sortings to select only perfect grapes; then on to whole berry fermentation for 30 days in small 10hl oak vats. Aged 17 months in new French oak barrels, there is neither fining nor filtration. The wine is bottled using gravity and vaccum corking to prevent contact with air.
Deep ruby-black color. Nose of coffee, cocoa, dark spices, vanilla, dark red raspberries-- very inviting in the glass, opens further with air. The palate starts with sweet cherry/berry fruit and nice tannins balanced harmoniously. An earthy note with a touch of herbals and red tea leads to a finish of more sweet fruit, spice and balance. Great depth, many layers, fantastic and unique wine.
