small bins that aged in barrel for 19 months in his garage in Aconcagua. It has sweet aromas of ripe fruits and flowery notes that make it quite showy, very clean and pure, elegant and complex. The palate is velvety with polished tannins and good acidity. The floral notes return in the aftertaste, but with with a restrained feeling. 10,479 bottles were filled. Drink now through 2020.”

Flaherty is a small production, boutique winery in Chile. Proprietors Ed Flaherty and Jen Hoover came to Chile in 1993 to work a harvest, fell in love with the country and never left. Over the years, Ed worked with some of the top Chilean wineries, before Ed and Jen struck out on their own. Small quantities of this delicious Syrah-dominant blend are now being imported into the United States for us to enjoy. This wine is deep purple in color with a garnet rim and notes of dark fruit, toasted oak and cinnamon. On the palate, the fruit is fresh with blackberry, blue plum, dusty cocoa and baking spices. This juicy, medium-bodied wine has very smooth tannins and is approachable now.

more about MOVI on indievintner.com for the full story. We’re going to focus on the wine, which happens to be an incredible dry-farmed, 70+ years old-vine Carignan out of the Maule Valley, the largest and one of the oldest wine valleys in Chile. And such a wine this is! The nose starts with spicy, peppery briar and cedar woods that almost immediately lead to sweet, dark fruits: boysenberry and framboises. This is a jammy, thick, serious nose that’s also trés sexy. The palate continues the conversation of fruit and spice with ribbons of silky, sweet, smooth and spice-filled tendrils of flavor that coat the tongue: jammy preserves of dark, ripe red berry fruits, dusty cherries and fresh-pressed cherry juice with a touch of raspberry for character. This is unctuous, real, awesome wine-- this is Carignan? WOW. Just WOW.

2011 was a bit cooler than 2010, and the wine might have more edges, and a little higher acidity. I find better balance in this 2011 compared with the 2010, with nerve and acidity, volume and great balance. The nose is still closed, less expressive and benefits from air, but there is a greater sense of harmony and integration, and I think in the long run it will be a better wine. This is a classic. Drink 2015-2027."

WINE SPECTATOR 93 POINTS - "A fleshy red, with lusciously fruity flavors of dark plum, cherry compote and dried blackberry, long and well-spiced. Structured, with a focused acidity that supports the long finish, accented by dark chocolate and cream. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2020."

Two years ago we discovered the Viña Ventisquero line from Chile. At the time we wrote, “WOW, what a lineup-- pure, multi-layered wines at unbeatable values,” adding several wines across many price points. At a recent trade show, we tasted the full line again and knew it was time to buy up, but this time we were most impressed with “the best of the best” selections from the “Grey” Gran Riserva tier and a few prestige bottlings. Ventisquero owns over 4,000 acres across top growing areas in Chile, from Casablanca, Maipo, Apalta, and more. The “Grey” wines represent the best blocks in the best vineyard from Ventisquero’s vast holdings. Winemaker Felipe Tosso is a star in Chile, but for these higher tier wines benefit from the added assistance of consultant John Duval, famed as the man entrusted to make Penfolds Grange for over 20 years. This collection is impressive and drinks well above their price tags that seem downright modest in the American market.

across the country for decades. This mistake persisted until the 1990s, but Carmenere is tricky and slow to ripen, nothing like Merlot in the vineyard. Ventisquero told us they waited a full month after picking Cabernet to pick their Carmenere. Their patience with this temperamental grape shows with a bold and fiery wine. Blackcurrant and blackberry fruit plays off fresh cracked peppercorn, sweet tobacco and black chocolate.
