DOMAINE DU GRAND TINEL 2010 CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE CUVEE ALEXIS ESTABLET

ROBERT PARKER 94 POINTS - "The top cuvee, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Alexis Establet is 100% Grenache from nearly 100-year-old vines. Most of this offering comes from the famed terroir in the northern Chateauneuf du Pape sector known as La Gardiole. Yields were 15-20 hectoliters per hectare, and the 2010 tips the scales at 15.5% natural alcohol. It displays a slightly darker ruby/plum/purple color than the traditional cuvee along with deep black currant and black cherry fruit intermixed with Christmas fruitcake, cedarwood, spice box and garrigue notes. A classic wine of Provence as well as Chateauneuf du Pape, with firm tannins in the finish, it is slightly less exotic and open-knit than its sibling, but it is very concentrated with impressive potential as well as longevity. It is good to see this cuvee return to form after a somewhat indifferent showing last year. This wine should drink well for 15 or more years."

The Cuvée Alexis Establet introduced in 1997 and named after one of the family’s ancestors is made 100% of the fruits of the 95 year-old Grenache vines. The wine ripens for 12 to 18 months in old and new barrels. It is produced only in the best harvesting years and needs an extraordinarily long aging period in the bottle.

Bold but balanced, strong yet refined, immense but contained. This is one that will be fun to watch evolve. It drinks beautifully now but has the potential to grow further with a bit of time. The nose is chockfull of sweet fruit, mostly ripe berries from raspberry to olallieberry, a bit of cherry, red plum. Elegant earthy spice and a touch of bacon and midnight florals seem to frame the rich depth of concentrated fruit. A touch of bramble as well. In the mouth, sweet fruit dominates but not in a totalitarian way-- the democracy allows for co-stars and is kept in check by excellent acidity and tannins. Ripe berries are in the spotlight with, again, cherry and red plum fruits, white pepper, a hint of anise, back bacon smoke and forest floor. The palate weight is full but lively, the sweet concentration of fruit lasts and lasts in a glorious finish that slowly exits the stage, exultant.
