ROBERT PARKER 93-95 POINTS - "Paul Hobbs has built quite an empire, both as a worldwide respected wine consultant and as the owner of his winery in Sonoma Valley. Read More...
I reviewed his Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon cuvees in Issue 209, and on this visit I tasted through his 2011 and 2012 Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs as well as a few Syrahs. His wines consistently hit all the high notes, and Hobbs continues to be a serious talent. I particularly enjoy his Cross Barn, inexpensive Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The 2011 Chardonnays range from tiny productions of 138 cases for the Ulises Valdez to 3,600 for the Russian River Chardonnay. The 2012s all reveal the tremendous up-front fruit characteristics of this year along with surprisingly high average alcohols, and good fresh acids. Paul Hobbs has introduced two Cross Barn Pinot Noir cuvees, one from the Sonoma Coast and one from Anderson Valley. These wines use a tiny bit of stems during their fermentations, and spend four months in barrel, 15% of which is new. Tasting through these same cuvees in 2012 demonstrated just how gorgeous this vintage is across the board in Northern California.

"The spectacular 2012 Chardonnay Edward James Estate offers tropical notes of pineapple, tangerine and orange along with good ripeness, delineation and purity. Full-bodied, layered and impressive, it will provide enjoyment over the next 5-7 years."

ANTONIO GALLONI 91-93 POINTS - "Paul Hobbs is always in motion. In late 2012 Hobbs acquired a new property in Coombsville, Napa Valley's most recent AVA. Just recently, Hobbs announced an ambitious new venture to make Riesling in New York State's Finger Lakes region with Johannes Selbach. That is of course in addition to the many wines Hobbs already makes in Sonoma for his own labels and with his many consulting clients in California and Argentina. Fortunately for Hobbs, he can count on the talents of winemaker Megan Bacitich, who takes care of the day to day at Hobbs's Sebastopol winery. I tasted a number of terrific wines on a recent visit. Overall, the 2012 Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs are a little bit softer and rounder than the 2011s. Sugars were slightly higher, while fermentations proceeded at a slower, more leisurely pace. Readers will also want to make note of the Crossbarn wines (reviewed separately), which offer terrific value and quality.

"Rich yellow stone fruit, smoke, licorice and honeyed notes blossom from the 2012 Chardonnay Edward James Estate. The style is broad, ample and creamy, with attractive honeyed nuances that are likely to become more prominent as the wine ages in bottle. Drinking window: 2014 - 2019."

"I loved the 2012 Chardonnay Ulises Valdez Vineyard for its authoritative power married to an unmistakable finesse and precision. Good acidity, purity and fruit in both the bouquet and flavor profiles make for a delicious white wine to enjoy over the next 4-5 years."

"The 2012 Chardonnay Ulises Valdez Vineyard is once again striking. All the elements fall into place effortlessly. The 2012 is naturally quite young and not fully formed, but it nevertheless is super-impressive. The balance of fruit, acidity and structural elements is terrific. Drinking window: 2015 - 2020."

The wine fermented slowly in French oak barrels with the wild yeasts finishing fermentation early in the new year and malolactic following soon after. Somehow, Hudson Chardonnay has the ability to be rich and decadent, yet retains fresh acidity, vibrancy, and minerals.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 92 POINTS - "These three new releases from Hudson Vineyards are more than worthy follow-ups to the 2009s. Christopher Vandendriessche is the winemaker, while John Kongsgaard consults.

"The 2010 Chardonnay is gorgeous. Layers of expressive, varietal fruit emerge from a rich, textured Chardonnay long on class and personality. Ripe peaches, orange blossoms, spices and butter all flesh out on the gorgeous, expressive finish. The 2010 was aged in French oak barrels, 80% new, with batonnage twice a month. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018."

ROBERT PARKER 93 POINTS - "My favorite wine of this trio is the sensational 2011 Chardonnay which reveals a Batard-Montrachet-like richness and hazelnut creaminess. Made from an Old Wente clone and aged in 80% new oak (which it hides very well), this wine has good acidity and a surprising, rich, intense mouthfeel with lots of caramelized tropical and honeyed fruit. This full-bodied wine is fresh, which is typical of this vintage, especially for many of the white wines. It appears to have 4-5 years of drinkability."

A stony mineral profile emerges from the nose with slightly reductive notes of apple, toast, and grilled nuts. Very intense entry on the palate with mouth-watering racy fruit, but somehow the wine is creamy, yet light. Grilled almonds, baked apples, and lemon zest are all here in spades yet framed so wonderfully with the vibrant acid. There is nothing overblown here for a wine of this richness, and this is perhaps the best “Hudson” Chardonnay yet!

The latest release of their Chardonnay is beautiful. French oak was used to give the wine weight and richness, yet it did not undergo malolactic fermentation and partial tank fermentation was utilized to retain the grape's acidity.

Aromas of green apple, tropical fruit and ripe stone fruit combine with a hint of orange blossom on the nose of this wine. The entry is bright and crisp with good acid and flavors of peach, lemon and a hint of minerality. The wine finishes with multiple layers of honey, cream and a touch of caramel from the lees stirred French oak.

the barrels were stirred weekly. No secondary, or malolactic fermentation was carried out, leading to the crisp, citrus character of this wine. The wine was bottled after approximately seven months of aging in the cellar.

The finished wine shows citrus, ripe pear and green apple in the nose. Hints of lush white peach are noticed as the wine opens up. The sur-lie aging has added richness and complexity, and plenty of oak character returns on the finish. Like all of Keenan’s wines, this Chardonnay is a food worthy wine whose crisp acidity and medium body will accompany a wide variety of food fare.

Santa Barbara, and Mendocino Counties. Avant takes its name from the French word for before and reflects the vibrant expression of the fruit before oak has the chance to impart much flavor. This refreshing Chardonnay bursts with intriguing layers of fresh pineapple, bright green apple, crisp Meyer lemon, juicy pear and wildflowers. The wine's refreshing acidity and sleek mineral notes are balanced by a rounded mid-palate with a long, pure fruit finish.

included in this wine, which no doubt explains the big, tropical fruit-scented nose, fine acidity, and medium to full-bodied flavors. Despite the fact that this cuvee sees 100% barrel fermentation with full malolactic, there is little evidence of oak. The wine is aged eight months, on its lees, in one-third French oak. 00 to $200.00 per bottle. However, we secured a small allocation of their Sonoma Mountain Chardonnay, which offers many the flavors of the single-vineyard Chardonnays, but at a more affordable price!

The Kistler plantings on Sonoma Mountain, situated on a hillside bench perfectly suited for growing world class Chardonnay, are interlaced with the rare combination of red volcanic and fine grained chalky soils. These are east facing terraced vineyards, shadowed from the afternoon sun by giant redwoods. This is a remarkable marriage of site and orientation to the cooler trendings of the valley below. They are some of the oldest Chardonnay vineyards in Sonoma County.

This wine is tremendously complex, straw/gold colored wine that really does run the entire gamut. It starts off with Burgundian with intense aromas of green apple and sea spray, flavors of flint and citrus, and is structured by vibrant acidity. As the wine opens, it becomes more and more Californian, with notes of roasted almonds, pineapple, lemon bar, marshmallow, toasted oak, and butter notes. Big, lavish, full-bodied, and mouth-watering, there is a reason why Kistler Chardonnays are requested every day of the year...and this is a GREAT representation of their house style.
