The copper casing of both the Brut and the Rose were inspired by the suit of armor worn by the knights of the palace. They are crafted from 100% second generation scrap copper and each bottle is recycled after consumption. So why the copper in the first place? Believe it or not, it’s not just bling it actually helps save energy and keeps the temperature of the wine stabilized while it’s being consumed without the use of an ice bucket.

are principally located in Dizy, Aÿ, surrounding Reims and Dormans.Paul Berthelot launched his own brand in 1977. In time, his two sons Jacques and Michel took over the running of the company, sharing the responsibilities of vineyard management and vinification. In 2007 Jacques’ son Arnaud, and his wife Valerie, began running the Domaine on their own. They farm 35 acres planted mainly to Pinot Noir, some Chardonnay and a bit of Pinot Meunier. The diversity of the vineyards allows them to blend beautifully balanced Champagne. The vineyards face directly south, the subsoil is largely chalk, yielding very elegant fruit and a distinct flavour particular to the town of Aÿ. The Berthelots manage the vineyards under ‘culture raisonnée’ – the absolute minimum of chemical treatments are done and are applied only when deemed absolutely necessary. Arnaud ploughs all the vineyards annually to avoid the use of chemicals.

this is based on 2006, it contains ten percent of reserve wines from 2005. This wine is now on its second disgorgement, from March of 2010, and compared to the first one (from September of 2009), it feels noticeably more harmonious and complete. Part of this is from the extra lees-aging, but also, I believe that Collin has achieved a perfect balance of dosage in this release, which has had a more dramatic effect on the wine than one might expect. This one is dosed at 1.6 g/l, allowing the wine to feel expressive yet tightly controlled, harnessing its ripeness and energy and bringing out a lovely clarity of fragrance in the aromas of pear, apple and lime zest. It feels complete and intensely vinous, finishing with long, flowery length and a brisk, flinty sense of chalkiness, and above all, the alcohol is much better balanced here than in the previous disgorgement. Whether or not this will hit the heights of the superb 2004 still remains to be seen, but with this release the wine has improved significantly, and holds much promise for the future. Last tasted: 7/10. A protege and former apprentice of Anselme Selosse, Olivier Collin is one of Champagne’s new generation of emerging artisan producers. Over the last few years Collin has begun to bottle wines from fruit he used to sell to Pommery. His first vintage was 2004, and that wine certainly bodes very well for the future. Collin cut his teeth working alongside Anselme Selosse, and while his wines share some similarities with those of his mentor they also clearly have their own unique voice. Because the wine spend a relatively short period of time on their lees the vintages can’t be officially declared on the labels."

PETER LEIM CHAMPAGNE GUIDE.NET 3 STARS - "Roederer was notably successful in this difficult vintage, and the 2005 Cristal is outstanding, demonstrating all of the positive attributes of the year while avoiding its faults. It's blended from 55 percent pinot noir and 45 percent chardonnay, and while it has an elevated sense of richness indicative of the vintage, it's remarkably elegant and graceful, already showing a terrific complexity of flavor and a classical refinement. Thanks to its bold fruit aromas, it's unusually approachable for a young Cristal, but it will take time to reveal all of its facets, and it should continue to develop over the next several decades. Last tasted: 3/12."
