the mountainous regions of Howell Mountain, Pritchard Hill and Mount Veeder called for several different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon on a number of different rootstocks upon planting in 1986. The vines are dry-farmed and vertically trellised.

Fermentation of Altamura Cabernet Sauvignon occurs in both open and closed top fermenters. Certain lots are allowed to macerate on their skins for up to three weeks following fermentation. This technique produces a wine with softer, more integrated tannins, which carry fruit and oak nuances through to the palate. The wine is racked into 70% new French oak barrels for a period of 34 months. The wine is lightly filtered and then bottled.

It should last 30-50 years. Made by Kendall-Jackson’s Bordelais winemaker Pierre Seillan, these wines represent the pinnacle of what they hope to achieve in high elevation sites in Knights Valley, an area increasingly being utilized by Napa producers given the great success Peter Michael and Kendall-Jackson have had in this region. These limited production 2009s and 2010s made at high elevation vineyards (Helena Dakota is at 750 feet, and the Helena Montana is at 950 feet) have not yet been released. These highly extracted, rich, full-bodied wines may have limited appeal given their aging potential and broodingly backward characters. All of these offerings are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that were aged in 100% French oak for 15 months prior to bottling."

elegant wines that show solid typicity and age-worthy profiles. His 2010s are superb across the board and possess slightly reserved aromatics with firm, pure textures. Downright backwards, especially when compared to his 2009s, they will all benefit from short- term cellaring and, I suspect, these scores will seem a bit low once they flesh out. His 2011s had just been bottled at the time of this tasting, so I opted to review them as barrel samples and give ranges for the scores. They all showed more up-front, perfumed and supple profiles, yet I think they will close down slightly over the coming year as they settle in bottle. Chris believes his 2011s might surpass his 2010s.

"Similarly colored, yet a step up in richness and depth, and certainly not aromatically challenged, the 2010 Champoux Vineyard is a superb blend of 42% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc and 26% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 21 months in barrel, it possesses gorgeous aromas of black raspberry, creme de cassis, dried flowers, spice box and a dusty pebble minerality on the nose. Medium-bodied, elegant and beautifully balanced, with fresh acidity and moderate tannin, it has upside and should round into form with another 2-3 years of bottle age and have over a decade or more of total longevity. The grapes come from primarily organic or sustainably-farmed vineyards along the benches, hillsides and mountains of Sonoma County (Monte Rosso is one of those vineyards). Fruit forward, bright aromas of raspberries and cherries are intermixed with cola and subtle oak. On the palate, the tannins are full yet velvety, and the wine shows flavors of cocoa, raspberries, black currants, anise and a hint of minerals. This wine shows a remarkable balance for the pricepoint!

Although David lacked a formal viticultural education, he learned hands-on by working in the vineyards and cellars of local wineries such as the Chappellet and Joseph Phelps. The first vintage of Chardonnay was harvested in 1985, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon in the nineties. A s his experience and knowledge of the land grew, David learned the ability of these hills to grow the very finest wine grapes. Today, with the help of a highly insightful team, David Arthur continues to cultivate rich concentrated wine grapes that in turn help them craft distinctive and memorable wines.

Predominately Cabernet Sauvignon with a little Petit Verdot, this wine has a dark ruby-red color baked cranberry, raspberries and baked plum; followed by spices of powdered ginger and hints of molasses, coco powder and toffee. The entry is rich and focused with firm mid palate tannins, cherry-cassis and minerality. The finish is long and chewy with chocolate-coffee like tannins. Best from 2014 to 2025.

ANTONIO GALLONI 91 POINTS - "The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Three Acre shows lovely immediacy in its dark red/purplish fruit. The tannins are firm, but also well integrated, which adds to the wine's overall balance. Savory herbs, licorice and new leather notes develop as the wine opens up in the glass. The 2011 is understated and pretty, but everything is in the right place. The tannins are a bit dry on the finish, but that is a relatively small critique. The 2011 Three Acre is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Petit Verdot from the estate's young vines."

Meritaggio is the brainchild of the Long brothers. Wanting to fulfill his desire of producing a fine Meritage blend, David set out to find clones of the five classic Bordeaux varietals. On his travels, he came across Sangiovese, which stole the spotlight from any Malbec he had ever tasted. Bob had the brilliance to name the wine “Meritaggio” in honor of Sangiovese’s Italian Heritage. This dark ruby red wine blend is bright with aromas of bramble red fruits, baked cherry plum and cassis, then layers of earth toneswild sage- bay leaf and tobacco. The palate is focused and concentrated in the middle palate layered with baked fruit cake, black tea and spicy pepper notes, and then finishes with polished-fine grain tannin.

"David Arthur's 2011 Meritaggio Estate is pretty, soft and delicate. Dark red cherry, plum, cinnamon and violets all flesh out in an understated, perfumed wine with lovely length and balance. Sweet tobacco, rosemary and mint appear later, adding complexity. The 2011 was made with the lowest percentage ever of Sangiovese, as David Arthur is re-working the lineup a bit using valley floor Sangiovese in the blend, thereby freeing up estate fruit for the Sangiovese bottling. The blend is 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Sangiovese, 9% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot." -Antonio Galloni
