rich and full-bodied, yet also express plenty of site-specific character.

"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is seriously beautiful. A dark, imposing wine, the 2010 wraps around the palate with layers of persistent dark fruit. There is a brooding inner intensity that is highly appealing. Today, the 2010 is very primary, but it should develop nicely and continue to drink well for another decade, perhaps longer. Hints of mocha and espresso add complexity on the racy, expansive finish. The 2010 is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot and 8% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022."

for this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon fashioned from fruit grown in the tufa (white volcanic ash) soils of Knight’s Valley. This is a terrific example of amountain Cabernet.

"The deep purple-colored 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Helena Montana reveals aromas of crushed rocks, flowers, black currants, and spicy oak. Powerful, tannic, medium to full-bodied flavors coat the mouth, but this cuvee clearly needs time in the bottle. Although it possesses beautiful purity, structure, and intensity, it will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring, and should keep for 15-20."

in high elevation sites in Knights Valley, an area increasingly being utilized by Napa producers given the great success Peter Michael and Kendall-Jackson have had in this region. These limited production 2009s and 2010s made at high elevation vineyards (Helena Dakota is at 750 feet, and the Helena Montana is at 950 feet) have not yet been released. These highly extracted, rich, full-bodied wines may have limited appeal given their aging potential and broodingly backward characters. All of these offerings are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that were aged in 100% French oak for 15 months prior to bottling. The alcohols came in between 14.2% and 14.8%. I gave slightly higher scores to the Helena Dakota cuvees, perhaps because they were showing more accessibility."

"An extra special wine, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Helena Dakota Vineyard possesses full body as well as a terrific bouquet of blue and black fruits, crushed rocks and spring flowers. A super-muscular, rich, powerful Cabernet built for long-term cellaring (which may explain why it has not yet been released), I would not touch a bottle for 5-7 years. It should last 30-50 years."

development of intensely flavored fruit. Cold soaked for 48 hours prior to fermentation for a gentle extraction of color and flavor, the wine was racked to a combination of French (70%) and American (30%) oak barrels, where it aged for 15 months prior to blending and bottling. Small lots of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot were incorporated into the final blend for added dimension.

This Cabernet Sauvignon offers warm aromas of dusty black cherry and plum with hints of cocoa and anise. Dense, layered flavors of black currant and blackberry are accented by notes of vanilla, tobacco and spice. Plush tannins glide into a lengthy, luscious finish.

The 2009 Mt. Veeder Cabernet's color is an intense, deep-purple verging on black. On the nose the wine is floral (violets) and meaty with spice, cloves, and tar as well as tons of black fruits, blackberries and blueberries. On the palate the wine is simply massive – rich and dense with loads of sweet, ripe, round tannins. Roasted meats, mint and more dark fruits permeate the enduring, seamless finish.

The meticulous practices employed by Abreu assure perfectly ripe fruit, and the particular site, soil, and exposure to sun produce a sensationally seductive and expressive wine.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 94 POINTS - "Andy Erickson has done a great job with these new releases from Arietta. Arietta’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon bursts from the glass with juicy dark cherries, smoke, crushed flowers and melted road tar. Hints of mocha, espresso and plums develop later, adding a darker register that is highly appealing. Round, supple and totally enveloping, the 2010 should drink beautifully over the next decade, give or take. The 2010 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Meteor vineyard in Coombsville. of Cabernet Franc, such as Château Cheval Blanc. The couple sought out their Coombsville vineyard property with an eye to producing top-quality Cabernet Franc-based wines from Napa Valley. They bought the Arrow & Branch Vineyard in November 2007, as this vineyard was the source of Tony Soter's renowned and highly rated Little Creek Cabernet Franc. The Contursi's have maintained the organic farming and, through their work with the detail-oriented Viticulturalist Mike Wolf, are continually improving this wonderful vineyard site.

A blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 26% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec, the gorgeous wine was aged for 20 months, entire in French oak barrels. It boasts a vinous perfume of spice (think anise), tobacco, candied orange peel and savory herbs. Warm and peppery on the entry, its ripe fruit include fresh blackberries and sweet cherry reduction. It’s a supple, seamless, layered wine of violet and berry compote made complex by notes of warm baked bread. The wood is quietly integrated leaving traces of milk chocolate and creating a gentle support for a beautiful wine. Interesting, with deft balance, this wine is structured and delightfully fresh but also suavely textured, long and full; finishing with a pleasing sweetness. This harmonious beauty will improve in the bottle over the next 10-15 years.

Fruit forward, bright aromas of raspberries and cherries are intermixed with cola and subtle oak. On the palate, the tannins are full yet velvety, and the wine shows flavors of cocoa, raspberries, black currants, anise and a hint of minerals. This wine shows a remarkable balance for the pricepoint!

for wine grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1978, Donald Long and his 28 year old son David began the epic job of building roads, clearing land and finally planting wine grapes. Although David lacked a formal viticultural education, he learned hands-on by working in the vineyards and cellars of local wineries such as the Chappellet and Joseph Phelps. The first vintage of Chardonnay was harvested in 1985, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon in the nineties. A s his experience and knowledge of the land grew, David learned the ability of these hills to grow the very finest wine grapes. Today, with the help of a highly insightful team, David Arthur continues to cultivate rich concentrated wine grapes that in turn help them craft distinctive and memorable wines.

Every year the winery has the opportunity to take the best of the best grapes and let them stand by themselves, they call this Elevation 1147. Elevation 1147 is always 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and a core percentage comes from the same block each year. The wine style is that of no other from David Arthur in that the structure is massive and full palate. The name Elevation 1147 comes from their location high atop Pritchard Hill. Elevation 1147 is the flagship Wine of David Arthur Vineyards and thus is consistently highly allocated.

The wine is an amazingly dense and dark ruby color with hints of magenta. Layered aromas of blackberry compote, espresso bean, dark chocolate, brandied cherries and hints of spicy earth tones like sassafras and star anise. There are hints of lavender and graphite followed by tobacco and black tea. The entry is big bold and massive with chewy tannins woven together with wild-brambly dark fruits, focused minerality and a firm finish.

ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 95+ POINTS - "I was deeply impressed with the wines I tasted at David Arthur this year. Winemaker Nile Zacherle has done a brilliant job with these new and upcoming releases. The David Arthur style is all about richness without excess heaviness. In addition to the wines below, I also tasted a Nebbiolo from the 2011 harvest that is easily one of the most interesting California Nebbiolos I have ever come across.

"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Elevation 1147 is going to require serious patience. It boasts stunning depth and power, but very much in the context of the house style, which is to say the Elevation 1147 remains a wine of exquisite elegance and finesse. This dazzling Cabernet Sauvignon caresses every corner of the palate with layers of beautifully delineated fruit. The 2010 is an exceptionally polished wine loaded with potential. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030.

Predominately Cabernet Sauvignon with a little Petit Verdot, this wine has a dark ruby-red color baked cranberry, raspberries and baked plum; followed by spices of powdered ginger and hints of molasses, coco powder and toffee. The entry is rich and focused with firm mid palate tannins, cherry-cassis and minerality. The finish is long and chewy with chocolate-coffee like tannins. Best from 2014 to 2025.

ANTONIO GALLONI 91 POINTS - "The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Three Acre shows lovely immediacy in its dark red/purplish fruit. The tannins are firm, but also well integrated, which adds to the wine's overall balance. Savory herbs, licorice and new leather notes develop as the wine opens up in the glass. The 2011 is understated and pretty, but everything is in the right place. The tannins are a bit dry on the finish, but that is a relatively small critique. The 2011 Three Acre is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Petit Verdot from the estate's young vines."

Meritaggio is the brainchild of the Long brothers. Wanting to fulfill his desire of producing a fine Meritage blend, David set out to find clones of the five classic Bordeaux varietals. On his travels, he came across Sangiovese, which stole the spotlight from any Malbec he had ever tasted. Bob had the brilliance to name the wine “Meritaggio” in honor of Sangiovese’s Italian Heritage. This dark ruby red wine blend is bright with aromas of bramble red fruits, baked cherry plum and cassis, then layers of earth toneswild sage- bay leaf and tobacco. The palate is focused and concentrated in the middle palate layered with baked fruit cake, black tea and spicy pepper notes, and then finishes with polished-fine grain tannin.

"David Arthur's 2011 Meritaggio Estate is pretty, soft and delicate. Dark red cherry, plum, cinnamon and violets all flesh out in an understated, perfumed wine with lovely length and balance. Sweet tobacco, rosemary and mint appear later, adding complexity. The 2011 was made with the lowest percentage ever of Sangiovese, as David Arthur is re-working the lineup a bit using valley floor Sangiovese in the blend, thereby freeing up estate fruit for the Sangiovese bottling. The blend is 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Sangiovese, 9% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot." -Antonio Galloni
