at present. An inky/purple color and lots of baking spice, espresso, black and blue fruits, and hints of graphite and toast emerge from this wine as well as formidable tannins in the finish. However, the tannins are sweet and well-integrated in this big, blockbuster effort. It will require patience by purchasers as it needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years; it will drink well over the following three decades."

deep garnet color with a nose that reveals a panoply of aromas: blueberry liquor, dark red fruits, black cherry, with subtle notes of baking spices and cedar. A small percentage of beautifully ripe Malbec and Petite Verdot contribute hints of plum and leather respectively. These abundant fruit characteristics, along with a touch of vanilla, reveal themselves in the mouth with multiple layers of flavor that coat the mouth and continue to a long finish. The tannins are superfine and silky, carrying the fruit along the palate from entry to finish without ever being obtrusive. Both the Malbec and Petite Verdot further enhance the classical texture.

split into separate parcels to accentuate the differences in soil and microclimates of the estate, and “Alfaro Family Vineyard” is their largest vineyard, at just over 16 acres, and is planted exclusively to Pinot Noir. It consists of 9 different blocks; each block has a different combination of clones and rootstock, including clones 113, 114, 115, 667, 777and 828. The vineyard is on a south facing hillside between 500 and 650 feet in elevation.

The grapes were 80% de-stemmed and the whole berries were placed into small open-topped fermenters on top of 20% whole clusters. The must was chilled to 55 degrees Fahrenheit and cold soaked for between five and seven days. The fermentations were spontaneous and no punch downs were performed. To avoid over-extraction and to keep the cap moist during fermentation Alfaro performed rack-and-returns via gravity. After fermentation the free run juice and press wine were kept separate and put into French oak barrels where it underwent a slow, natural malolactic fermentation and was aged for 12 months on the lees.

The resulting wine is medium bodied and deep ruby in color, and shows a burst of fruit on the nose, and is chock-full of bright cherry, raspberry and spice flavors on the palate.

the mountainous regions of Howell Mountain, Pritchard Hill and Mount Veeder called for several different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon on a number of different rootstocks upon planting in 1986. The vines are dry-farmed and vertically trellised.

Fermentation of Altamura Cabernet Sauvignon occurs in both open and closed top fermenters. Certain lots are allowed to macerate on their skins for up to three weeks following fermentation. This technique produces a wine with softer, more integrated tannins, which carry fruit and oak nuances through to the palate. The wine is racked into 70% new French oak barrels for a period of 34 months. The wine is lightly filtered and then bottled.

development of intensely flavored fruit. Cold soaked for 48 hours prior to fermentation for a gentle extraction of color and flavor, the wine was racked to a combination of French (70%) and American (30%) oak barrels, where it aged for 15 months prior to blending and bottling. elegant wines that show solid typicity and age-worthy profiles. His 2010s are superb across the board and possess slightly reserved aromatics with firm, pure textures. Downright backwards, especially when compared to his 2009s, they will all benefit from short- term cellaring and, I suspect, these scores will seem a bit low once they flesh out. His 2011s had just been bottled at the time of this tasting, so I opted to review them as barrel samples and give ranges for the scores. They all showed more up-front, perfumed and supple profiles, yet I think they will close down slightly over the coming year as they settle in bottle. Chris believes his 2011s might surpass his 2010s.

"Similarly colored, yet a step up in richness and depth, and certainly not aromatically challenged, the 2010 Champoux Vineyard is a superb blend of 42% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc and 26% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 21 months in barrel, it possesses gorgeous aromas of black raspberry, creme de cassis, dried flowers, spice box and a dusty pebble minerality on the nose. Medium-bodied, elegant and beautifully balanced, with fresh acidity and moderate tannin, it has upside and should round into form with another 2-3 years of bottle age and have over a decade or more of total longevity. Drink 2015-2022."

"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon from Michael Mondavi's Animo label is laced with ash, plum, graphite, smoke, incense, tobacco and licorice. With time in the glass, the fruit begins to emerge in a lush, full-bodied wine with considerable richness for the year. The Atlas Peak tannins are there, but they are nearly buried by the pure extract and concentration of the fruit. Graphite, smoke, white pepper add complexity on the close. This is an especially juicy style for the year, but it works. Drinking window: 2016 - 2026."

Dancing Hares) was invited to become Arietta’s new winemaker, and worked alongside former partner and winemaker John Kongsgaard for a year before taking the reins in the summer of 2006.

The core of the wine comes from a 1.6 acre block of Cabernet Sauvignon in Coombsville, a small vale just east of the town of Napa. The soil is primarily volcanic, and the Arietta block has a southwestern exposure which is the most favored in this relatively cool climate. The grapes require longer than typical hang time (often until mid-October), and develop great depth of flavor without exceeding 25.5 brix. For additional layering and complexity Andy Erickson blends small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, or Merlot into the wine, depending on the character of the vintage.

ANTONIO GALLONI 96+ POINTS - "This is the finest and most complete set of wines I can remember tasting from Arietta. Proprietor Fritz Hatton and winemaker Andy Erickson seem to have reached a new level of quality with the 2012s and 2013s, both of which are brilliant. This is a fabulous showing from top to bottom."

"The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is fabulous. Gorgeous, expressive aromatics meld into dark red stone fruits in a Cabernet of pure breed and class. These cool sites in Coombsville yield a Cabernet built on savory aromatics, perfume and depth. There is so much going on in the glass that words prove superficial in trying to describe just how beautiful the 2012 is. Majestic. That might do it. Drinking window: 2017 - 2032."

Cheval Blanc. The couple began their romance while traveling through Bordeaux in the mid 1980's, and have since found their dreams come true in being able to live and make wine in Napa Valley. They sought out their Coombsville vineyard property with an eye to producing top-quality Bordeaux blend wines from Napa Valley. This property is organically farmed.

One of the rising stars of Napa Valley winemaking, Jennifer Williams, was named Winemaker for Arrow & Branch in April 2011. After years of working with and learning from legendary winemakers such as Rosemary Cakebread, Francoise Peschon, and the Novak family, Jennifer now brings her outstanding talents and experience to Arrow & Branch. In 2002, Williams joined Araujo and Spottswoode as a harvest intern, splitting her time between these two great winemaking estates. At Spottswoode, Jennifer was drawn to the philosophy of organic and sustainable farming, which Tony Soter had introduced in 1985. Following harvest, she joined their team full time, working under guru David Abreu in the fields and Rosemary Cakebread in the winery. In 2004, with a deeper understanding of the estate vineyard, she took over as Vineyard Manager and was Spottswoode’s Winemaker from 2006 to 2011. The San Francisco Chronicle named Jennifer a “Winemaker to Watch” in 2007.

The Arrow & Branch 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of fruit from to ov the very best vineyards in the Napa Valley; Lewelling Vineyard in St. Helena and Stagecoach Vineyard in the eastern mountains overlooking the valley. Aged for 20 months in 75% new French oak, this is a dense and balanced wine from the start, exhibiting a warm, dark, brooding entry, and has aromas laced with chocolate, cinnamon, and cedar. It proudly exhibits distinct dried herbal notes characteristic of classic Cabernet, followed by flavors of plum, black cherry, and wet stone. With generous and plush tannins, it opens rich and broad across the palate and ends with a long and structured finish. With decanting this wine is immediately appealing, but patient cellaring of 10-15 years will further enhance the beauty of the remarkable wine.

While Richard Arrowood has since sold the winery, it is good to see that the new owners are carrying on his same attention to detail that Richard had, and the winemaking staff work hard to keep Arrowood Winery at the top of its game! Fruit forward, bright aromas of raspberries and cherries are intermixed with cola and subtle oak. On the palate, the tannins are full yet velvety, and the wine shows flavors of cocoa, raspberries, black currants, anise and a hint of minerals. for wine grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1978, Donald Long and his 28 year old son David began the epic job of building roads, clearing land and finally planting wine grapes. Although David lacked a formal viticultural education, he learned hands-on by working in the vineyards and cellars of local wineries such as the Chappellet and Joseph Phelps. The first vintage of Chardonnay was harvested in 1985, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon in the nineties. A s his experience and knowledge of the land grew, David learned the ability of these hills to grow the very finest wine grapes. Today, with the help of a highly insightful team, David Arthur continues to cultivate rich concentrated wine grapes that in turn help them craft distinctive and memorable wines.

Meritaggio is the brainchild of the Long brothers. Wanting to fulfill his desire of producing a fine Meritage blend, David set out to find clones of the five classic Bordeaux varietals. On his travels, he came across Sangiovese, which stole the spotlight from any Malbec he had ever tasted. Bob had the brilliance to name the wine “Meritaggio” in honor of Sangiovese’s Italian Heritage. This dark ruby red wine blend is bright with aromas of bramble red fruits, baked cherry plum and cassis, then layers of earth toneswild sage- bay leaf and tobacco. The palate is focused and concentrated in the middle palate layered with baked fruit cake, black tea and spicy pepper notes, and then finishes with polished-fine grain tannin.

"David Arthur's 2011 Meritaggio Estate is pretty, soft and delicate. Dark red cherry, plum, cinnamon and violets all flesh out in an understated, perfumed wine with lovely length and balance. Sweet tobacco, rosemary and mint appear later, adding complexity. The 2011 was made with the lowest percentage ever of Sangiovese, as David Arthur is re-working the lineup a bit using valley floor Sangiovese in the blend, thereby freeing up estate fruit for the Sangiovese bottling. The blend is 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Sangiovese, 9% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot." -Antonio Galloni
