exceedingly supple mouthfeel. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small part Petit Verdot (all aged 18 months in barrique). The beautifully rich wine inches forward over the palate with heft and determination, imparting bright cherry, blackberry and spice as it moves slowly along. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2021.

2009 vintage. It is my convinced impression that 2010 offers a very showy and flamboyant interpretation of this 80-20 Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend. The density is a bit deeper and the aromas are a tad brighter. Compared to the other wines in its blind flight, the Guado de- Gemoli appeared the darkest and most endowed with Indian spice, black soya, espresso and blackberry essence. Finely chiseled mineral tones of granite and smoke snap it back into immediate focus. Give it another ten years of cellar time. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028."

Giovanni Chiappini is a winemaker who owns a small family run estate in the rich countryside of Bolgheri. Giovanni was born in a farmer’s family, which immigrated to Bolgheri from a small village in Marche in 1954. His parents, Nilo and Rosa, bought 6 hectares of land in the Ferruggini county from the aristocratic family Della Gherardesca. After six years of working experience as a workman in 1978 Giovanni bought his own first piece of land near Strada Bolgherese, which is located right beside the famous Ornellaia estate. During next 18 years Chiappini acquired more land nearby which today form an estate’s production area, where vines and olive trees are mostly cultivated following the local tradition. In the year 2000 the first bottles of wine were put on the market, and since then the family has made its good name not only for the good olive oil but also for the excellent wine.

Giovanni Chiappini believes that it is the vine that makes the wine and therefore everything around them has to be looked after perfectly. Together with Bordeaux varieties traditional Sangiovese and Vermentino are also cultivated. His wines, due to the position of his land, reflect Bolgheri style, matching structure, perfume and elegance. Chiappini is in his way a “simple-guy” winemaker, who succeeded to transform his vast agricultural experience into ability to create noble wines, connecting modern Bolgheri style with an old Tuscan tradition.

palate give it away. Scents of sweet cherry tobacco, sandalwood and warm autumn spices lead to notes of new leather and black tea. Upon tasting, the cherry fruits (both red and black) establish a foothold as baking spices lend support; all uplifted by excellent acidity.

Hailed as the standard-bearer of Italian enology, the historic Tenuta San Guido estate is known for crafting Sassicaia (Gambero Rosso’s “Read More...
2013 Top Red Wine of the Year”), the world’s first Super Tuscan and an important contribution to Italy’s evolving reputation as a fine-wine producing nation in the mid-20th century. The 2000 vintage saw the first release of a new IGT Toscana wine-- called Guidalberto-- from newly planted vineyards dedicated to its production. While the wine is conceived differently from Sassicaia, it is shaped by the same soil and climate.

Earthy pepper, green olive tapenade, dark florals, mixed cherries and sea salt fill the nose. The palate starts with cherry and strawberry fruit as the soft tannins and steady acidity keep the wine uplifted and lively, as more earth and green olive blend with Kriek lambic and white pepper. This is big, muscular, forceful wine but impeccably balanced and lithe-- perhaps the perfect wine to enjoy now while waiting for the Sassicaia to be ready!

wines in Italy, but of the entire world. A few years ago, Tenuta San Guido began producing Le Difese and this is the first time we have been able to obtain an allocation and bring it into the store. Even better, we are able to offer it at an attractive “Everyday Drinker” price point!

A true pioneer of the Super Tuscan movement, Tenuta San Guido broke the rules governing Tuscan winemaking by making a Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine in Bolgheri. Initially shunned by Italian authorities, they were forced to label their wine simply as vino da tavola (table wine). The quality was undeniable and Sassicaia was finally awarded DOC status. In fact, it remains the only wine from a single estate in Italy to have its own appellation, Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC.

Le Difese is a fresh and approachable wine which shares the family traits, that make Sassicaia so famous. It displays delicious purity of fruit and a richness, which belies its price point. For those making case purchases, it will be hard to resist drinking all of your bottles in the short term as this wine is drinking beautifully now. For those with patience, this wine can be enjoyed over the next 5 years or so.

WINE ENTHUSIAST 91 POINTS - "This fresh, savory blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Sangiovese offers a bouquet of blue flowers, cedar, wild berry and light cooking spices. The vibrant, focused palate doles out juicy wild cherry, ripe red currants and white pepper alongside silky smooth tannins and bright acidity. Drink through 2020."

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "The 2012 Bolgheri Rosso (50% Merlot, 30% Syrah and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in oak for ten months) opens to soft layers of cherry syrup and sweet fruit embedded within the wine’s rich texture. The Syrah component is 10% higher in 2012 and you can definitely identify lingering tones of smoked bacon and white pepper that are characteristic of that grape variety. This is a fine effort."

I was absolutely impressed with this new set of releases from Cinzia Merli and consulting enologist Luca D’Attoma. The biggest surprise, however, is the 2011 Scrio (100% Syrah) that embraces the warmth of the vintage with impeccable precision and elegance. So much attention in the past has been paid to Messorio and Paleo, but the 2011 vintage finally sees Scrio in the spotlight.

sandalwood and iron aromas and flavors. Nonetheless, this comes across as elegant, even as the tannins prove formidable on the finish. A terrific young wine in the making. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2017 through 2035. 2,200 cases imported."

JAMES SUCKLING 96 POINTS - This shows incredible concentration with dark-berry, dark-chocolate, mint and rosemary character. Full body with a superb depth of fruit and polished tannins. It's chewy but caressing. This needs at least four or five years to come around. Powerful and intense. Yet it remains fresh and bright

Winemaker's Notes - The sun-filled, early-maturing 2011 vintage perfectly expresses the qualities of Ornellaia. The wine appears an intense, youthful ruby red. The nose offers rich fruit that is fully ripe yet at the same time crisp and lively, backgrounded by delicate nuances of balsam and toastiness. On the palate, the powerful concentration immediately impresses, as do the tannins, massive yet silk-smooth and glossy, which allows the wine to completely fill the mouth but with no feeling of heaviness. The finish, near endless, is deliciously pungent and spicy, with a welcome crispness throughout.

Ornellaia has a pedigree and grace, which set it apart. The Cabernet-based Bordeaux blend is always on the must have list for wine collectors or those looking for a bottle to enjoy on a special occasion. The 2012 vintage was characterized by an abundance of sunny, dry weather resulting in an even, consistent ripening process which yielded a generous, full-bodied wine with enticing aromatics.

This wine is remarkably appealing and seductive. In fact, the winemaker is so taken with this vintage, he chose to define it with the word, Incanto (Enchantment). This year, for the first time on the 750ml bottle, Ornellaia commissioned an artist to create a special label for its wine. Contemporary Swiss artist John Armleder was selected to interpret L’Incanto with a unique design which includes his signature. This brilliant crimson-splashed adornment is applied to one bottle in each wooden 6-pack of Ornellaia. This makes this world class wine even more collectable and we suspect this first edition will be followed by different artwork in subsequent years. Purchasing 6 bottles in the wooden box will guarantee you will receive the special Enchantment bottle.

JAMES SUCKLING 97 POINTS - "A tight and silky red with compacted fruit and tannin texture featuring blackcurrant, mushroom and bark undertones. Full body, firm tannins and a minerally finish. Excellent structure and mouthfeel. A cooler style of Ornellaia, bringing it back to the classicism of this celebrated region. Bordeaux blend. Better in 2018."

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia was founded in 1981, in a beautiful, unspoiled part of Tuscany. From the outset, their mission was to produce outstanding wines. Since then passion and dedication, coupled with a unique terroir and an extraordinary microclimate, has brought the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia's prestigious labels great success and recognition as one of the most important wineries in the world.

Podere Sapaio was founded in 1999, after Massimo Piccin convinced his father to invest in purchase of land and creation of wine-making estate in prospective Bolgheri DOC area. Being originally from North-Italian region of Veneto Massimo always felt passion for wine and wanted to embody it in his own project.

The estate comprising of up-to-date winery and 40 hectares of land has been created practically from zero. The Sapaio vineyards are divided between the municipalities of Castagneto Carducci and Bibbona. The lands are located on quaternary deposits and range from loose coarse-grained sandy sediments to flood-land deposits with free-draining calcareous soil. Grapevines from Bordeaux that have been cultivated here over the past fifty years have established themselves in the area very well. The philosophy of Sapaio is based on experimentation and innovation: their research is directed towards new expressions of Bordeaux grapes in the Bolgheri region, with the objective of creating wines that combine power, elegance and longevity.
