JAMES SUCKLING 92 POINTS - "Intense aromas of dried cherries and plums with hints of rose stem. Full body, with fine tannins and a crisp and delicious finish. Read More...
Very yummy. Drink now or hold."

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot
Hailed as the standard-bearer of Italian enology, the historic Tenuta San Guido estate is known for crafting Sassicaia (Gambero Rosso’s “2013 Top Red Wine of the Year”), the world’s first Super Tuscan and an important contribution to Italy’s evolving reputation as a fine-wine producing nation in the mid-20th century. The 2000 vintage saw the first release of a new IGT Toscana wine-- called Guidalberto-- from newly planted vineyards dedicated to its production. While the wine is conceived differently from Sassicaia, it is shaped by the same soil and climate.

Earthy pepper, green olive tapenade, dark florals, mixed cherries and sea salt fill the nose. The palate starts with cherry and strawberry fruit as the soft tannins and steady acidity keep the wine uplifted and lively, as more earth and green olive blend with Kriek lambic and white pepper. This is big, muscular, forceful wine but impeccably balanced and lithe-- perhaps the perfect wine to enjoy now while waiting for the Sassicaia to be ready!

leather and spices are some of the many notes that are layered in this sumptuous, totally beautiful wine. The 2009 stands out for its silky tannins and phenomenal overall balance. This is one of those wines that will probably enjoy a long drinking window. There is little question the ability to blend grape varieties was a huge help in this vintage. In my opinion, that is the main reason Ornellaia is a slightly more complete wine than Masseto in 2009. In one of my blind tastings, the 2009 made a very eloquent case for itself as the wine of the vintage. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. In 2009 winemaker Axel Heinz used the highest percentage of Cabernet Franc ever in Ornellaia and gave the wine less time in oak, both with the goal of preserving as much freshness as possible. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029

JAMES SUCKING 96 POINTS - "Full and juicy with black pepper and spice aromas and flavors. Very intense. Powerful but not heavy with lots of structure and backbone. The 25% of Petit Verdot in the blend gives the spicy character. Wait and see."

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia was founded in 1981, in a beautiful, unspoiled part of Tuscany. From the outset, their mission was to produce outstanding wines. Since then passion and dedication, coupled with a unique terroir and an extraordinary microclimate, has brought the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia's prestigious labels great success and recognition as one of the most important wineries in the world.

remarkable complexity on the nose, releasing heady fragrances of dark wild berry, pungent spice, and smooth pipe tobacco. The palate is finesse par excellence, with silky tannins and bright, clean-edged fruit, crowned with a finish boasting impressively racy tannins."

To celebrate the 25th Anniversary, each and every bottle of Ornellaia 2010 is decorated with a special logo, silk-screened in gold and ivory.

Ornellaia’s philosophy considers the birth of the wines to be the truest expression of their terroir. The grapes for Ornellaia are selected by hand, and picked in the estate’s vineyards in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast. The varying natures of the estate’s terroirs, marine, alluvial and volcanic, are ideal for the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc ad Petit Verdot. The Estate extends over 97 hectares along the Tuscan coast, just a short distance from the medieval hamlet of Bolgheri and the famed cypress-lined avenue ‘Viale dei Cipressi’. The constant work of the team and the ideal microclimatic and geological characteristics have led the wines, in just twenty years. — 1985 was the first vintage of Ornellaia — to enjoy great international success. In 2001 the 1998 Ornellaia was declared Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator.

for this wine but that works beautifully here in preserving freshness and structure. elegant and restrained than the prototypical Super Tuscans we’re used to from Bolgheri. Consequently, his wines have garnered the praise and attention of some of the Italian wine world’s most discriminating connoisseurs and press (Matt Kramer comes to mind). The 2010 Bolgheri Rosso is Satta’s calling card—a deliciously satisfying blend of Cabernet, Sangiovese, Merlot, Teroldego, and Syrah that is hand harvested and fermented with native yeasts before spending twelve months in old French oak, ultimately bottled unfiltered. The resulting wine is smooth, complex, and indicative of great finesse and breed. One of the best Bolgheri has to offer, a steal at $18.98.
