Pinot Noir from Avenay Val d'Or. It's made up of equal parts 2011 and 2010, and it feels saline and savory under ripe notes of citrus and orchard fruits, its pinot noir content seemingly more evident in body and texture than in overt flavor. Brisk acidity provides a lively balance and structure, as well as fragrant length on the finish. Last tasted: 11/13." -Peter Leim

combining the lilting elegance of the vintage with a vibrant energy and resonant depth of fruit. The components on the palate feel tightly composed and finely poised, persisting with excellent length thanks to racy acidity, and while this is highly alluring now, it will only continue to gain in complexity and expression with additional time in the cellar. Last tasted: 4/13."

Blancs can also be produced from small islands of Chardonnayvines situated in that ocean of Piont Noir known as the Montagne de Rheims. A great example is this Forest- Marie Blanc de Blancs which presents the genre in a deliciously accessible, dare we say, hedonistic, guise. This cuvee, which is a blend of2004 (45%) and 2005 (55%), reveals developed aromas of apple pie and nougat which accurately presage its luxuriant, spicy apple and brioche-tinged palate. This is a true show stopper that works really well with or with out food and is a tremendousvalue to boot.

which is situated on the steep slopes
of Montgueux, a hill which has been called the “Montrachet of Champagne.” In addition to having a desirable
southeasterly aspect, Le Cotet boasts some of the deepest, oldest chalk soil in Champagne. Its soil also contains
numerous outcrops of quartz that add a spicy component to its wines. Mostly from 2007 this Le Cotet is more
precocious and open knit than its predecessor. Silver, with yellowish glints, this Chardonnay Champagne opens
with a striking bouquet of pippin apples, yellow plums, chalk dust, honey and allspice. Medium-full bodied, this
Lassaigne brims with quince, apple pie filling, ginger and key lime notions all enveloped with a bracing saline
minerality as well as sturdy acids. A must with seafood or sushi, but also delicious all on its own.

aspects of Le Mesnil Champagnes is that the vineyards of the village are planted with a special clone of Chardonnay that is noted for its pronounced apple-like varietal flavor and for its penetrating perfume. This Blanc de Blancs honors its noble origins by offering up billowing aromas of wisteria and apple blossoms followed by vibrant tastes of pippin apples and bosc pears interlaced with inflections of chalk and lemon meringue. A deliciously authoritative aperitif that works well with or without food.

with elegance, subtlety, and gorgeous fruit that is not dressed up by excessively sweet dosages(5-15 grams of sugar is the range for brut, but chez Lilbert stays within 6-8g and their Champagne's pressure is lower than the norm). As Andrew Jefford observes in his book, The New France, This tiny 4-ha Cramant domaine is the source of some very fine and long-lived Blanc de Blancs madeby Georges Lilbert and his son Bertrand. The style is less soft, creamy, and flowery than the Blancde Blancs of most large houses might leave the drinker expecting: Cramant here has a taut, steely, rigorous quality....

of pressure instead of the usual six. This combines wine from 2005 and 2004 in equal proportions, and it’s dosed slightly lower than the BSA, at five grams instead of seven. It demonstrates the extra depth and resonance of old vines while retaining a sleek, chalky elegance, and while it doesn’t possess a lot of weight, it feels powerfully intense and energetic in its dark, rich core of citrus and stone fruit. It’s underlined by savory notes of dashi broth and toasted nuts, and the lower pressure seems to accentuate the vinosity of the fruit on the long and authoritative finish."

What better way to toast the Holidays than with a Champagne from a prized Grand Cru vineyard dubbed “Christmas earth”? “Terres de Noël,” which sits on a steep hillside with a southerly exposure, is planted with 72-year-old Chardonnay vines and it would certainly have to be included on any informed short list of the best vineyards in Champagne. This 2009 marks a most welcome return to the lofty form of the 2004 and earlier efforts.

notes of chalk dust, white peaches, subtle bees honey, brioche, and yellow plums. Medium-bodied with gorgeous as well as persistent effervescence, and a dry, fabulously pure, laser-like finish, it should be drunk over the next 3-4 years.90 Points Wine SpectatorThere's a richness to this fresh Champagne, with toast, apple pastry and crystallized honey flavors. This is enlivened by well-integrated acidity and hints of lemon zest and brine, with a minerally finish. Drink now through 2012. 150 cases imported."

JOHN GILMAN 91+ POINTS - "The new release of Pierre Moncuit’s non-vintage Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs (all from Mesnil fruit) is still a pretty young wine, but it has very good depth and plenty of nascent complexity and will really blossom nicely with a year or two in the bottle. The youthfully fine bouquet offers up scents of pear, delicious apple, incipient notes of pastry cream, chalky minerality, spring flowers and a delicate touch of lemon zest in the upper register. On the palate the wine is medium-full, bright and intensely flavored, with lovely, frothy mousse, fine focus and balance, crisp, beautifully-integrated acids, nascent complexity and fine length and grip on the elegant and still tightly-knit finish. This is not a bad drink today by any means, but it will really open up with another twelve to eighteen months of further bottle age. A fine bottle."
