remains the “uberboss” of the operation. A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Shiraz and 8% Merlot, the 2008 Ode to Lorraine spent 18 months in new and seasoned French and American hogsheads. Deep garnet-purple colored, it gives intense blueberry, black currant and spice box aromas with hints of prunes, licorice and some earth. Rich and full-bodied with medium to firm grainy tannins and plenty of enlivening acid, it finishes long with layers of mulberry and spice flavors. Approachable now, it should soften more in a year or so and drink best from 2012 to 2020+."

and blueberry. Full-bodied on the palate, it has a glossy texture, layered flavors bordering on opulent, incipient complexity, plenty of depth and richness, and a long, fruit-filled finish. It can be enjoyed now but will drink well for a decade."

This is the first vintage of this wine produced and a first in the US as well. The Ashmeads decided to dedicate a special estate Shiraz to the memory of their beloved father Neil Ashmead. Early on Neil conducted the family business on the road and had an affection for fast cars as well. Hence the name “Grand Tourer Shiraz” was given to the wine. It’s seamless from start to finish and very apparent that a good deal of love and hard work went into producing it. We are very grateful to offer this special wine to our Hi-Time Customers.

Rich aromas of spicy plums, blackberries, anise and sage oil with hints of tar, pepper and cedar. The intensely fruited palate is concentrated, rich and lush with excellent balance, velvety tannins and a long finish.

AUSTRALIAN WINE COMPANION 98 POINTS - "Vivid, deep purple-crimson; this is a blue-blood aristocratic Shiraz, certain in its supreme power, length and balance, and not going out to prove anything. If anyone doubts its quality now, the scales will fall from their eyes over the decades ahead, as it will be recognised by all and sundry as one of the greatest Mount Edelstones. Screwcap. 14.5% alc. Drink to 2062."

STEPHEN TANZER INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLAR 94 POINTS - "Saturated ruby. Wild, intensely aromatic bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, incense, smoky Indian spices and vanilla, with a seductive floral quality emerging with aeration. Sweet and seamless on the palate, offering intense blackberry and boysenberry flavors, a touch of anise and building spiciness. Velvety and full but lively too, finishing with excellent power and smooth, sneaky tannins that come in late"

used French oak. The vivid colour of the wine attests to its moderate alcohol, as does the joyful display of red and black fruits; the tannins are supple, the oak subtle but evident. Fantastic value."

Dean Hewitson founded his winery after working and traveling extensively in the world of wine. He came to the realization that South Australia's strength lays in its very old vineyards, many of them dry-grown and planted in the 19th Century! As a result, he bought property among some of the oldest vineyards in the world in an area synonymous with Australian Shiraz, the Barossa Valley. Discovering the beauty within these venerable old vines to express their distinctive character is the essence of Hewitson.

Hewitson began producing the Ned & Henry bottling after a friend challenged him to produce a traditional, full-bodied Barossa Valley Shiraz-based wine, which could be drunk young with lunch or dinner. Hewitson agreed to make the wine, but would not stray from his fundamental philosophy of making wine with balance, fine grained tannins and a clear expression of fruit. Hewitson rose to the challenge and the result is a delicious, silky wine, which can be enjoyed now or over the next 5 years.

prized Shiraz growing regions throughout Australia. Their intention was, and still is, to showcase the diversity of Australian Shiraz by highlighting regional characteristics and allowing the fruit to be the primary feature of the wines. We were glad the angels decided to leave part of their 'share' for us-- "Angels' Share" references, of course, the portion of the wine (or other liquid) that angels take from or levy on the winemaker while said wine is in barrel (also known as evaporation). But the intimation is that the wine the angels would want is pretty good stuff and that certainly fits in this case. The nose is a mix of New World/Old World with spicy, peppery plums, light minty earth, raspberries and a touch of cured meats. McClaren Vale meet the Rhône. The palate continues with bright fruits, blackberry, boysenberry, excellent peppery spice, currents of mint and eucalyptus, bacon fat and a bit of earth in the finish.

ANTONIO GALLONI 94 POINTS - "Bright purple. Sexy black and blue fruit aromas are complicated by vanilla, sandalwood and olive paste. Smoky cassis and blueberry liqueur flavors are sharpened by zesty acidity and given depth by notes of licorice and dark chocolate. Gains sweetness and spiciness with air, finishing on a powerful blackberry note, with slow-building, harmonious tannins and striking persistence. Fifty-nine percent of this fruit was grown in Barossa Valley and the rest in Eden Valley." -- Josh Raynolds

talking Australia. And the Yalumba ‘Hand Picked’ Shiraz/Viognier 2012 is no exception. This is a wine with limited availability so we did our best to grab as much as we could from the distributor. As is the tradition in the Côte-Rôtie (and the rules of the appellation), the Syrah (or, in Australian verbiage, Shiraz) is co-fermented with a smaller percentage of the white varietal, Viognier. Yalumba’s Hand Picked Shiraz/Viognier undergoes that same winemaking process of co-fermentation. The Shiraz, along with a small amount of Viognier, are actually crushed and fermented together (what harmony!). The addition of the Viognier intensifies the color, adds an extra dimension and a wonderful fragrance to the bouquet. It also brings softness to that rich and powerful Barossa Shiraz. It’s as if the Shiraz underwent training in etiquette to tone down its demeanor! The result is a wine of elegance, a term not typically associated with Barossa Shiraz! Inside the bottle, the wine has the full and alluring flavors of Barossa along with a good level of acidity to make it lively. Enjoy!

that dance through the vigorous finish. Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro. Drink now through 2019. 1,000 cases imported." –HS

Australia's roots in Rhone grapes go back to the founding of the Barossa Valley in the 1840's and 50's. There are Shiraz/Syrah vines in Barossa that are over 150 years old alongside similar pockets of old-vine Grenache and Mourvedre. A "Chateauneuf-style" blend is a natural for Australia, but in the past, these wines were usually bottled by varietal. Yalumba has been at it longer than most (163 years!), but this is the first release for "The Strapper" blend. We had to wonder what took them so long! The pretty red fruit of the Grenache adds brightness and elegance to some powerful, spicy notes from the Mourvedre (aka, "Mataro.") This wine is serious and responds nicely to a bit of air-time, moving from brooding black fruit to high-tone pomegranate, rose petals, and kirsch. There were only about 300cs for the US market-it will go fast.
