PASCAL MARCHAND 2011 BOURGOGNE ROUGE

The 2011 Marchand-Tawse Bourgogne comes from plots situated in Pommard, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Prémeaux-Prissey. The soils are a mix of clay and limestone, the bunches were 100% de-stemmed and aging occurred with 12 months in 400-liter barrels, followed by 12 months in vat. All aging operations are carried out with reference to the lunar calendar. Production was 10,500 bottles (875 cases).

This is fairly serious wine for a Bourgogne-- but coming from Marchand (who partnered with Moray Tawse, winery owner in Ontario, Canada, friend and collaborator, in 2011) we are not the least bit surprised. The nose has notes of dried cherries, light spice, white pepper, paraffin wax and a dusting of light florals. The palate continues with dried fruit, cherries and cranberries, kreik lambic, that leads to light minerality, forward acidity, spice and subtle earth. Big, austere and serious for most Bourgogne wines, the level of quality, depth of flavors and overall zeitgeist of this Bourgogne is about what we expect when enjoying wines from Pascal
