BONAVITA 2010 FARO

One of Sicily's wine jewels, besides Mount Etna, is its neighbor, the DOC Faro. This wine region is perched on the top of the Monte Peloritani ridge on Sicily's extreme east, its vineyards literally overlooking the Strait of Messina. Vines have been grown in this part of Sicily since the time of the first Greek settlements. The climate here is cooler than one would expect and the grapes aren't harvested until October.

Giovanni Scarfone's tiny Bonavita estate has been in his family for more than 100 years. Giovanni, after studying agriculture in Bologna, returned home and converted the vineyards to organic farming (his father and his grandfather never used any chemicals anyway). The yields he gets from the vines are very low; the wine is fermented with indigenous yeast in small stainless steel tanks and aged in used oak barrels. He uses no sulfur during vinification. The 2010 Faro is composed of 60% Nerello Mascalese, 30% Nerello Capuccio and 10% Nocera. Ruby colored, this wine displays a sweet, exotic nose of hay, red berry fruit and garden herbs. In the mouth flavors of crushed red fruits lead to the lively and dry long finish. Serve this with rich meat dishes.
