with saliva-inducing, invigorating panache, incorporating hints of pistachio oil and salt. Dupeuble claims none of the vines that produced this are younger than 60 years, and even his nouveau is from vines nearly as old. This will remain delightful for at least the next 2-3 years.

Wine Advocate - "George Duboeuf and his estate-collaborators – for further general comments on whom consult my issue 190 report – harvested from mid-September into the first week of Read More...
October and pronounced themselves reasonably satisfied with the size of their crop as well as its quality. Most of the fruit came in at between 12-12.5% alcohol, with only a small share being chaptalized. And while the manner of extraction typically practiced chez Duboeuf strikes me as serving for rather uniformly deep colors, Duboeuf remarked that the 2010s colored with particular, and surprising, ease. The percentage of wines bottled at the time of my June visit was, predictably, considerably higher than had been the case for the 2009s at the same point on the calendar. Observing conventions established in the aforementioned previous report, I have made reference to aging potential only for any wines that I expect might be worth following for longer than a couple of years, and where I have identified a wine solely by appellation, it represents a so-called “Selections Georges Duboeuf” cuvee, adorned with his company’s signature flower labels. I also tasted on this occasion several late-released, wooded “prestige” bottlings – rendered in 1,000-2,500 volumes – which however were not destined to appear in U.S. markets."

assemblage from older barrique – is more concentrated as well as focused than this year’s Cuvee des Fous, which explains why he reversed his usual serving order. Black raspberry and cassis shadowed by framboise distillate and almond extract inform the nose as well as a finely-tannic yet (despite modest alcohol) glycerin-rich and (given the absence of sulfur) surprisingly vivacious palate, with suggestions of iodine, walnut oil, crushed stone and salt informing a piquant, mouthwatering, vibrant finish. Ideally stored, this should be deliciously fascinating to follow over the next half dozen years."

WINE ADVOCATE 90 POINTS - "Nicole Chanrion - who, amazingly, said she began picking last year already on September 10, yet at 12.7% potential alcohol - Read More...
had only bottled her 2010 Cote de Brouilly two days before she poured it for me. Scents of fresh black raspberry set the tone for a vivacious and juicy, yet surprisingly plush palate on which piquant notes of huckleberry, toasted pecan, and crushed stone serve for counterpoint and savory salinity for saliva-inducement. This is a fine exhibition of Chanrion's talents and those of the 2010 vintage. I would expect it to perform well for at least 4-5 more years. (The - at least, by this estate's standards - deep, dark 2009, on which I reported in issue 190, is like many of that vintage currently showing its tannic teeth and bitter edge, yet also its complexity.)"

But that wouldn't mean anything if the wine weren't so well made and delicious. Château Thivin, still run by the Geoffray family, who purchased the estate at the end of the 19th century, has vineyards planted with mostly 50-year-old Gamay vines, one reason these wines have such character.

cuvee from older vines and better parcels – leads with sour cherry and purple plum wreathed in iris and peony.
