the Grangers have lived and worked in Julienas. Pascal Granger, born in 1961, is now the owner and winemaker and guiding spirit behind the domaine. The Granger estate encompasses approximately 10.5 hectares of vineyards, 8 of which are within the appellation of Julienas. The domaine's principal holdings are found in the lieu-dits of Croix Rouge, Fouillasses, Gonnards, and Mouilles. The oldest of the vines (45 to 90 years of age). This Julienas is racked into stainless steel and bottled in March of the year following harvest. The finest product of the old vines parcels is selected and racked into a combination of large and small oak barrels where it completes the elevage.

intensity and richness to the brooding, powerful and very firmly structured medium-bodied flavors that possess outstanding length on the austere, backward and clearly built-to-age finish. I would only buy this with the intent to age it as it's not likely to be a wine that will drink well young but on the other hand, it should be great in time."

of a long, illustrious past. The remarkably old vines form one single, undivided vineyard circling the estate, and benefit from optimal soil and microclimate conditions. South-southeast hillside exposure to the sun allows the grapes to attain perfect ripening before they are harvested. This wine displays a sumptuous deep red color. its intense, complex nose offers an array of fruits, from peach to raspberry and black currant, with a subtle touch of cinnamon. Ample structure and excellent balance will allow this wine to age in bottle quite gracefully." WJDEUTSCH.COM

fruit vivacity and incorporating an abundance of fine tannin, which as de Castelnau acknowledges reflects an emphasis on pigeage that was especially pronounced with this cuvee. Smoked meat, peat, and crushed stone add depth and this finishes with impressive persistence, even if a touch of tannin seems, for now, to have the last word. I suspect this will be worth following for 4-6 years but would like to revisit it a year from now."

from Jean Foillard every week with the greatest of pleasure. How beautiful is the bottle, with its red wax seal? The wine itself is soft and unctuous, tasting of prunes and dried cherries, a voluptuous cru Beaujolais made with painstaking care. The organically farmed vines from the famed "Côte du Py" range from 10 all the way up to 90 years of age. This is a very serious Gamay.

their spirituous counterparts, as well as of brown spices and resin reinforced if not engendered by toasty new wood. Sweet fruit and firm, slightly grainy texture are not entirely resolved on the palate, and this is definitely one of those Chateau des Jacques bottlings that needs to – in director de Castelnau’s familiar expression – “digest its wood.” As it takes on air, a positive, clean sense of meatiness emerges as well. The wine will certainly be worth following for several years."

their Chenas En Papolet seems evident also in a prominent, mouthwatering salinity and a sense of lift and sappy brightness of red currant and red raspberry. Those looking for geological signs might associate the iron- and manganese-rich characteristic for Moulin-a-Vent in general with the deep beef marrow, meat-stock richness that underlies this Carquelin and supplies a dynamic, yet somehow by no means discordant, counterpoint to the wine’s sharply-focused red fruits. As with the corresponding Champs de Cour, tannin is very fine and in the background, and the texture is almost silken. Hints of lanolin and brown spices from barrel are discreet and well-integrated. This should be worth following for half a dozen or more years. (The 2009 performed this June at the upper end of my issue 190 projection, displaying an even more striking, shimmering mineral savor.)"

advanced in Chateau des Jacques’s conversion to biodynamic farming, thanks he says to the diligent collaboration of those participating vignerons who are responsible for day-to-day work in these particular vines. Decidedly the most carnal wine in its collection, this emphasizes both smoked and fresh red meats and displays a sappy sense of extract-richness even though tart black fruits are not to the fore. Saliva-inducing salinity, tincture of iodine, and what I can only describe – even if this is merely from power-of-suggestion – as iron filings introduce dynamic and depth to a sustained finish. This finely-tannic, energetic though hardly effusive Moulin-a-Vent should benefit from a couple of years in bottle and merit attention for six or more. (The fruit intensity and surf-and-turf depth vibrantly displayed today by the 2009 Rochegres easily merit my highest issue 190 expectations and confirm that wine as among the prime candidates for wine-of-the-vintage.)"

austere overall impression than its immediate siblings, and this includes pungent hints of dill and carrot-top which suggest a less-ripe element. Salted meat juices dominate over fresh red berries, but there is a brightness and mouthwatering juiciness to the finish – arguably borne of this site’s, in point of fact, higher clay content than its neighbors’ and hence greater water- and eventual acid-retention – that offers welcome counterpoint to the stoniness and suggests a handsomely and athletically lean wine whose energies will not dissipate for 4-6 years. (Here is one instance where today the 2009 is showing a notch less impressively than I projected, coming off just a bit more cooked-fruit and opaque, though still fascinatingly complex and meriting a 91-point rating.)"

s practice of multiple cuvees and bottlings, with the Diochon 2010 Moulin-a-Vent Vieilles Vignes that I tasted in June representing the unfiltered cuvee destined for the U.S. and bottled in May (the domaine’s fourth bottling of the vintage), and as usual predominantly from the layered decomposed granite and clay of the lieu-dit Champs de Cour on which the estate is situated. Blackberry, cedar, and smoked meats are shadowed by leafy herbal overtones, and saturate a palpably extract-rich palate suffused with fine but abundant tannin. Tart berry skin and pungent herbs lend a relatively austere cast to a lightly-chewy but impressively persistent finish. While this is short on charm, it suggests that some patience will be rewarded with further intrigue and a versatile table companion that should remain so for at least 4-5 years. (Tasted alongside, the 2009 displayed additional clarity – as I had hoped it would – and performed on the upper side of my issue 190 projection. I suspect it will always hold the edge over an admittedly distinctly different 2010.)"

he also makes a statement about its appellation’s potential with a 2009 Regnie that costs as much as his wine from across the line in Morgon. From tank, this boasted vivid, bright red raspberry and cherry, with (for Breton typical) low-sulfur seeming to accentuate the purity of fruit and encourage a caressing texture without sacrificing any sense of refreshment. Almond and pistachio extract; brown spices, bittersweet inner-mouth iris florality, and invigorating salinity add allure. The sense of richness no doubt comes with fairly high alcohol (Breton was not present when I tasted, and I did not have chance to inquire about the level of this or his corresponding Morgon) but there is neither heat nor roughness. This should be a beauty in bottle, but like any Breton wine should be cellared watchfully and only if your conditions are ideal."
