is drinking beautifully right now. The finish is long and clean and the flavour profile is classic southern Beaujolais. This is a wine of some interest as very little white Beaujolais is produced.

There is one other technique that Jean-Paul uses to produce the lovely texture of this wine. He no longer uses high, vertical tanks, but has had a tank made that lies horizontally so that there is closer contact between the wine and the lees at the bottom of the tank.

s work—but she would not be deterred from her dream of becoming a vigneronne. The Côte-de-Brouilly appellation sits on the hillsides of Mont Brouilly, a prehistoric volcano that left blue schist stones and volcanic rock along its slopes. These stones yield structured wines with pronounced minerality and great aging potential. After her formal training at the viticultural school in Beaune Nicole had a brief internship in the Napa Valley, where she learned another approach to winemaking but, happily for us, gained a deeper appreciation of the traditional winemaking techniques of the Beaujolais: hand harvesting, whole cluster fermentation, aging the wines in large oak foudres for at least nine months, and bottling unfiltered. The resulting wines are powerful, with loads of pure fruit character and floral aromas.

It is no surprise that Château Thivin is the benchmark domaine of the Côte de Brouilly; everything about it is exceptional. Built in the fifteenth century on an ancient volcano which Read More...
juts out steeply into the valley below, Thivin is the oldest estate on Mont Brouilly. Even more important, however, is its tremendous success since farmer Zaccharie Geoffray purchased the château with its two hectares of land at auction in 1877. His son Claude expanded the property over the next few decades, and his son, also named Claude, boosted the prestige of the zone in the face of the Great Depression when he played a pivotal role in the creation of the Côte de Brouilly appellation. With his wife Yvonne, he also helped to bring greater recognition to the entire region with the establishment of the Maison du Beaujolais in 1953. Over the years the family continued to promote the appellation, receiving many influential artists and journalists at the château. The French novelist, Colette, wrote admiringly of her visit to Thivin, for example. In 1979, Richard Olney took Kermit to visit on their first wine trip together. It was Olney’s top recommendation in the whole of the Beaujolais region. The current generation of the Geoffray family continues their tradition. Today their grandnephew Claude, his wife Evelyne, and their son Claude-Edouard continue the tradition as staunch and proud defenders of the terroir of the Côte de Brouilly.

Thivin’s Côte de Brouilly parcels are predominantly south-facing and are planted entirely with Gamay vines that average 50 years of age. The soil is plowed and composted regularly while cover crops are left between some rows to encourage microbiotic activity. Absolutely no insecticides are used. On a slope with a grade of 48% and crumbly surface, implementing these techniques is essential to safeguard the soil from erosion, but it isn’t easy! Each section of the vineyard is harvested and vinified separately to preserve the unique characteristics afforded by variations in exposure and altitude. Even the estate’s vineyards in the Brouilly appellation are planted on a moderately steep hillside of decomposed pink granite, while most of the appellation is planted on the flat valley floor. Traditional whole-cluster fermentation keeps the characteristic fruity qualities of Gamay, after which the grapes are transferred to cuves by gravity without being crushed. Each vintage spends a few months in large oak foudres before bottling. The resulting wines, according to Kermit, resemble “…a country squire who is not afraid to get his boots muddy. Handsome, virile, earthy, and an aristocrat.”

impressive fruit concentration with black cherry, mulberry and cassis fruit, hints of fresh fig loitering in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. This is well-balanced but still taut, with a firm backbone for a Fleurie. Strict now, I would afford this a couple of years in bottle. Drink 2016-2022. .

It was a pleasure to meet Gilles Gelin at a joint tasting held at Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud. He is the fourth generation of the Gelin family to farm the estate based in Lancie, which includes 32 hectares of vines in Fleurie (6 hectares), Morgon (1 hectare) and Beaujolais Villages (18 hectares), although for completeness I have also included his more “rebellious” cuvees, which are labelled as “Vin de France,” and are worth looking out for if you happen to be in France. The grapes are picked by hand, vinification is whole bunch and Gilles uses semi-carbonic maceration for up to 25 days. Gilles wines are well-crafted, bright and for want of a better word, “joyous” Beaujolais wines that represent great value."

harvesting and winemaking. Without hesitation he purchased 2 ha and is now working organically a total of 6.5 hectares in Beaujolais, primarily in Moulin-a-Vent with small plots in Fleurie, Chenas and Beaujolais-Villages. His vineyards are striking – with lots of diversity, excellent south facing exposure and picturesque backgrounds. The vines are not trellised and quite old at 40-111 years old. His vines are carefully maintained and are surrounded by the beauty of poppy flowers. All work is manual including harvest with an average yield of 45hl/ha. As expected from his vineyard practices he allows for native yeast fermentation and adds no sulfites.
The Moulin-a-Vent is in the “Michelots” vineyard where some of Yohan’s vines are as many as 111 years old. Moulin-a-Vent is known for lower natural yields and ancient vines reach deeply into the soils of pink granite and manganese, the resulting wine’s expression is impressively concentrated rich and spicy.
The Fleurie is from a .5 hectare plot called ‘Le Vivier’ with 40-70 year old vines. Sandy and blue granite soils with south facing vines. The wine experiences 18 days maceration resulting in an elegant, pretty wine, a truly excellent first vintage for this dynamic young vigneron.

"Little would we know that when Marcel Lapierre took over the family domaine from his father in 1973, he was on the road to becoming a legend. In 1981, his path would be forever changed Read More...
by Jules Chauvet, a man whom many now call his spiritual godfather. Chauvet was a winemaker, a researcher, a chemist, and a viticultural prophet. It was he who, upon the advent of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the 1950s, first spoke out for “natural wine,” harkening back to the traditional methods of the Beaujolais. Joined by local vignerons Guy Breton, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Jean Foillard, Marcel spearheaded a group that soon took up the torch of this movement. Kermit dubbed this clan the Gang of Four, and the name has stuck ever since. These rebels called for a return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification: starting with old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulfur dioxide or none at all, and disdaining chapitalization. Marcel was recently joined by his son Mathieu, and together they took the natural wine philosophy one step further, following organic and biodynamic vineyard practices. The end of the 2010 vintage was Marcel’s last. He passed away at the end of the harvest—a poetic farewell for a man that forever changed our perception of Beaujolais. Mathieu continues the great work that his father pioneered with confidence, albeit on his own.

The methods at Lapierre are just as revolutionary as they are traditional; the detail and precision with which they work is striking and entirely different from the mass-produced majority of Beaujolais on the market today. Decomposed granite comprises most of their eleven hectares, and the vines are an average of 45 years of age. Grapes are picked at the last possible moment to obtain the ripest fruit, which is a trademark of the estate style. The Lapierres age their wines on fine lees for at least nine months in oak foudres and fûts ranging from three to thirteen years old. These wines are the essence of Morgon: bright, fleshy fruit with a palatable joie de vivre that was undoubtedly inherited from their creator. In the words of KLWM salesperson Sam Imel, “They are meant to be devoured.” " Kermitlynch.com
