THE WINE ADVOCATE - 92 POINTS

The 2013 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Loibner Steinertal offers white fruit flavors and an intense, concentrated nose. Read More...
The wine is a rich and full-bodied, fresh and well-balanced Grüner which combines juiciness with minerality, but remains – at least today – a quite technical wine.

Leo Alzinger is one of the leading estates in the Wachau. The wines are highly rated in Austrian/German wine reviews and David Schildknecht scored the 2012 Riesling Smaragd Steinertal 96 points in issue 212 (and also 96 points for the 2007 vintage in issue 181) and the 2012, as well as the 2007 Riesling Loibenberg Smaragd, 95 points. The clear, cool and minerally-piquant Steinertal Riesling is also my favorite from the 2013s, however, Alzinger's wines did not fascinate me as much as my forerunner and as many other Smaragd wines I tasted in February at the Domäne Wachau in Dürnstein. There is not much to criticize here: the wines are extremely well made, clear, profound, dense, piquant and expressive. But there is something that stops them from really hitting hit my heart. It's not that I dislike them, but I'm not in love with them. If I had to name a certain feature that makes an Alzinger Smaragd an Alzinger Smaragd I don't know what to say, except the very well-made style, and a clear expression of terroir. Possibly, I wish there was a little more of Leo Alzinger's intuition and less perfection?

exemplary for a classic, lighter-bodied Federspiel. This wine opens with notes of kaffir lime, lemon, white pepper and subtle hints of green peas and fresh herbs. The wine has great texture and brilliant acidity, and is just an overall exceptional example of what Gruner Veltliner should be. Food Pairing: Steamed artichokes, grilled asparagus, fish and spicy dishes.

in effect a borderline Smaragd at a bargain price. And whatever—the name is what it is, but the wine is wonderful; super-peppery and full of tarragon in the Zalto, more sapid and juicy in the tulip—and also more phenolic, so a nod to Zalto this time, for pushing the vivid sweet sting of the vineyard forward and yielding a minty finale. I also miss the chervil notes in the tulip. (This stuff will make you crazy…) but the wine will just make you happy. – Terry Theise

by Dr. Friedrich "Fritz" Zweigelt. It is now the most widely-grown red grape variety in Austria. Berger's Zweigelt is fresh and unoaked, medium-bodied, and moderate in alcohol. This is a lovely, soft, aromatic red reminiscent of pinot noir in its cherry/raspberry scent and taste. There are subtle herbal notes on the clean finish. Serve this wine slightly cool with anything from a roast pork loin to a grilled cheeseburger. This wine comes in a liter bottle sealed with a crown cap. (Put a bottle stopper or an old cork in the bottle if you don't finish it right away.)

Gemischter Satz”: vintage to vintage the wines show a wide range of texture, fruit, and acidity imparted by multiple grapes at varied ripening stages. However because no one variety dominates, the wines are never so different from what the fan of Gemischter Satz would expect. The 2014 Heuriger is bright with plenty of acid and fruit and a touch of sweetness. Pair it with traditional heuriger food such as Kümmelbraten (caraway pork belly roast), Faschierte Laibchen (fried minced meat patties), Fleischknödel (meat dumplings) and the classic Wiener Schnitzel.

cultivated by mass selections and so remained indigenous. The 2013 Heiligenstein Erste Lage Alte Reben is made from Riesling vines averaging 45 years with the oldest up to 70 and 80 years. These vines, says Willi Bründlmayer, give small and super ripe berries with a highly intense aroma and concentrated taste. Indeed the steel-fermented wine which aged in 2800 liter barrels until it was bottled in late summer 2014 is extremely deep, complex and elegant on the nose, indicating dusty mineral aromas interplaying with ripe and dried apple and discreet citrus flavors. This is a young, pure, intense and piquant Riesling of great elegance, finesse and balance that is very firmly structured if not still somewhat edgy but has the serenity, calm and finesse of a great wine. It tastes (and really is) less sweet than the Lyra and also the alcohol is more moderate (13% instead of 13.5%). I wouldn't touch it for at least for five years but I'd be happy to cellar as much as I need until 2030. Stephan Reinhardt.(92+)

with food - especially with all of those no-no items that you're not supposed to pair with wine, like artichokes, bitter greens, asparagus, etc.-- there is simply nothing in world of wine like Grüner. This entry-level Grüner from the estate of Willi Bründlmayer, whom many consider to be Austria's best, shows us in spades everything for which Grüner is so beloved: a rich, yet crisp and firm collage of stone and citrus fruits - supported by hints of edamame, daikon, and sweet pea - that is supported by a core of complex, savory minerality, which informs you that this wine is from Terrassen or terraced vineyard sites. A great example of the genre, and an incredibly versatile wine at the table; get it while it lasts!

like tartness and mouthwatering savor, all enrobed in lusciously ripe, white peach and apple on a plush palate. “This site has an effect a lot like Schutt,” explains Lucas Pichler, “because the eroded stone that form its basis followed the creases and crevices in the hillside that are precisely what conduct cool air down from the woods above the vineyards.” Wafting hints of chamomile and suffusion of crushed stone add to the interest and allure of this refined, long-finishing Riesling that should prove worth following through at least 2022."

“In recent years,” notes Lucas Pichler, “we’ve been harvesting a little earlier in order to depress the alcohol levels a bit,” which in 2012 meant among other things beginning with Gruner Veltliner Federspiel already in the third week of September. After what I had tasted thus far of the vintage, I was amazed to find the Rieslings here in aggregate even finer than the Gruner Veltliners, a pattern that was to be dramatically accentuated at nearby Alzinger. (I did not get chance on my most recent visit to catch-up with Pichlers’ Sauvignon Blanc from this vintage.

though noble and fresh, aroma of honeydew melon, pineapples and hints of lychee. Very rich in extract and highly concentrated on the palate, this opulent yet still well-balanced wine is one to be enjoyed in small sips rather than in bottles (at least when it's so young). This is an impressively rich and velvety textured wine, indeed, though it lacks the tension and freshness of the Schütt at the moment.

Emmerich Knoll has probably the finest collection of 2013s along the Danube river. The Smaragd wines of the family are full-bodied, complex, precise and highly elegant. I was too late, unfortunately, to taste all the Federspiele (they were sold out since a long time) but I am pretty sure these will be highlights too in the 2014 vintage. Emmerich junior describes the 2013s as "lean, straight and very precise" with "acidity levels on the top edge." "I like that," says Emmerich Jr. "because it proves that it is still the vintage that makes the wine and not the wine grower." He describes 2013 as "the contrary of 2011," (which was a warm vintage) and puts 2012 "in the middle of 2011 and 2013 but tendentially more towards 2011 than 2013". He believes that 2013 will be "a very keepable vintage." "The wines are still so fresh and youthful and the alcohol levels are not above 13 or 13.5% even in the Smaragd category, which are carried by their beautiful acidity." Like Roman Horvath, Emmy Knoll also believes that 2013 is the greatest of the past three vintages.

Aromas of ripe pear, exotic flowers and tobacco. The opulent cantaloupe fruit is laced with complex wild herbs and a hint of botrytis that adds a sweet twist. At once rich (14% alcohol) and precise, with a long, complex finishes of spices and lemon zest, this youthful Grüner Veltliner is a selection of Knoll’s best blocks. Most of the 2013 bottling, though, is from the Loibenberg. Give this another five years before you open the first bottle.

hints of ginger. With 12% alcohol, this is a light to medium-bodied but stunningly complex, intense and tension-filled wine with a pure and lingering mineral character and a lovely piquant acidity. In its mineral character, the 2013 Hefeabzug reminds me more of a Muscadet than a so called classic Veltliner from Austria and this – for sure – is meant as a positive comment.

Christine and Nikolaus Saahs did not want to send their wines into a tasting with peer wines. "Due to their tender structures and extremely low alcohol levels, wines from the Nikolaihof do not benefit from tastings where they stand in competition with more powerful wines. They need time and temperature to unfold their talents in the glass," they explained me and went on: "The best qualities, our Smaragd wines, are bottled only after years of aging in casks, so at the moment we have just Smaragd to show, the 2013 Nikolaihof Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner." I accepted their point, although there is no Smaragd that I tasted at Domäne Wachau that would not have benefited from "more time and temperature." However, my schedule was too narrow to visit the Nikolaihof, so the Saahs family sent me their current releases, including Federspiele to my home office where I tasted the wines with the same patience I gave all the others. The current rage of Nikolaihof wines is excellent and includes two highlights, the 1997 Riesling Vinothek and the 2005 Trockenbeerenauslese. Also the Federspiel category is outstanding, even though all the wines would benefit from further bottle age, as the still young 2006 Riesling Federspiel Vom Stein demonstrates.
