Monte Faustino, named for its location in the hilltop hamlet of Monte Faustini, is located in the heart of the historic Classico zone of Valpolicella. The wines are vinified in an original 16th century cellar that was renovated by the Fornaser family who first started harvesting grapes here in the early 20th century.

of intense dark aromas and flavors. Bittersweet chocolate, cloves, violets, plums and blackberry jam cover every inch of the palate in a stunning, headspinning Amarone that captures all of the best qualities of the year. When Romano Dal Forno's wines are on, there is nothing quite like them, and that is certainly the case here. If opened young, the 2008 needs a little air. Actually, a lot of air."

JAMES SUCKLING 97 POINTS - "Wonderful aromas of rose petal, blackberry, sugared walnut and hints of sea salt. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a warm, enticing palate with dried fruits, blackberry, black olive and freshly cracked slate. Fabulous Amarone."

possesses beautiful layers of dark plums, prunes, leather, coffee beans and grilled herbs with superb density and fine overall balance. Although the style is similar to that of the Campolongo di Torbe, the Mazzano shows an additional level of depth and vibrancy. This is an exceptional wine. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2019." (10/08) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Needs air to bring out the rich aromas of dried cherry, currant, spicy earth and fresh herbs. Full-bodied and very tight, with firm tannins coated by a solid core of fruit and mineral. The finish is chewy. Needs more time, but worth the wait. A very dry, muscular style. Best after 2009."
Jancis Robinson named Mazzano as 1 of her best 46 wines of the world. Mazzano is an austere and a very powerful majestic wine, a true Amarone designed from its conception to be a great red wine and not just a lesser, drier style of Recioto. Mazzano is among the very few Amarones which can benefit from aging in small barrels. It can accompany red meats, game, quail and other flavorful recipes. Excellent with aged and piquant cheeses like parmesan, pecorino etc. It is also a great after-dinner wine.

a big wine, no doubt, with thick extraction and jammy dark fruit flavors. But it contrasts those large-scale qualities with minute details that include dark cola, grilled herb, pressed violets and crushed mineral. The mouthfeel shows a similar level of harmony with bold density followed by silky tannins."

"Montecariano is an under-the-radar estate that delivers great wines from the Valpolicella area. I was happy to learn more about the Ripasso and the base Valpolicella. Both wines offer considerably more complexity and sophistication than their peers."
