some citric, floral and spicy (white pepper) and a touch mineral. In the mouth it is very intense, focused, laser-like cut, delineated, with good acidity and a long finish. I can see with wines like this why some people link Albariņo to German grapes, even though this example is closer to a Grüner Veltliner than a Riesling. This is as good as Albariņo gets!

Do Ferreiro, an 11 acre estate, much of it old vines, was founded in 1973.Gerardo Mendez farms it organically, uses native yeast fermentation, and ages his wines sur lie. Cepas Vellas, meaning "old vines: is a single vineyard, family estate dating back two centuries. These 200 year-old vines grow on sandy soils facing the Atlantic Ocean and lend this wine a unique, mineral-briny characteristic reminiscent of the ocean. Enjoy by itself or with shellfish.

Winemaker Evan Frazier started the Ferdinand label in 2010 with just 56 cases of Albariņo. Introduced to winemaking in 2006 by Abe Schoener of the Scholium Project, Read More...
that year Evan worked his first harvest, in the Roussillon (Maury, France), with ancient Carignan and Grenache vines. Ferdinand is made in the Kongsgaard cellar on Atlas Peak (Napa, CA) where Evan is the General Manager for Kongsgaard Wines and has worked with John Kongsgaard since 2008.

Markus Bokisch decided to plant his own vineyards east of Lodi after beginning his career carefully farming some of the best vines in Napa. Probably the foremost authority on Spanish varieties in California, his family is from Spain and he looked to those roots when he planted Albariņo, Tempranillo, Garnacha Blanca, Verdelho, and Graciano. The Vista Luna site is uniquely situated far to the northeast of Lodi in the rolling benchland at the edge of the Sierra foothills. It is known for its cobbled, rocky soil and the cooling breezes which blow from the Delta to the Sierras. Other wineries working with fruit from Vista Luna include Turley, Neyers, Scholium Project, Forlorn Hope, and Mark Herold Wines.

Gently whole cluster pressed and barrelled down to neutral barrels, the wine ferments spontaneously with native yeasts and no temperature manipulation. Malolactic is arrested with S02 to preserve freshness and the wine spends 8 months on primary lees with no stirring. Light gold color, this wine is balanced and attractively fragrant, with a savory and floral aspect that includes orange peel and lime zest, lemongrass, quince and grapefruit aromas and flavors. Lees aging in neutral oak gives the wine finesse, sophistication, and a hint of nuttiness a pleasing complement to the varieties balance of natural acidity, slight bitterness, and salty finish.

are pure class. The palate is fresh and zesty with a crisp seam of acidity; bright apple-y fruit and a touch of spice towards the poised finish. If I were to quibble, the palate does not quite match the aromatics, but it remains an excellent Albarino. Drink now-2018."

Bodega Granbazan is located in Tremoedo, in the Salnes sub-zone of Rias Baixas. Owners Manuel Otero and his nephew Jesus Alvarez own 17 hectares of 30-year-old Albarino vines that is supplemented by long-term contract with growers. Grapes are hand-picked, de-stemmed and undergo six to eight hours of cold maceration, while fermentation is undertaken in concrete and steel tanks using both natural and cultured yeast. I adore their evocative, rather old-fashioned labels with their maritime-themed drawings and equally, more importantly, I loved the wines inside. These are pure Rias Baixas Albarinos that brim over with crispness, flavor and authenticity.

STEPHEN TANZER 91 POINTS-"2012 Bodegas La Cana Albarino Rias Baixas (half aged in stainless steel and half in large French oak): Light, bright yellow. Read More...
Highpitched aromas of lime zest, lemongrass and jasmine, with a chalky top note. Dry and tightly wound, offering energetic citrus and orchard fruit flavors that expand and deepen with air. Shows excellent energy on the finish, leaving behind lime and pear skin notes. Very grown-up in style, with no excess fat; it's an amazing value to boot".

The La Cana is a wine that will surprise you with its zip. It shows a mix of nectarine and apricot that is pure Albarino, but it is fresher and crisper than most with a subdued note of minerality on the mid-palate and finish that is just enough to make the wine-geeks happy. The winemaker here is Alister Gardner from New Zealand and while the flavors are purely a reflection of Spanish soils and grapes, the wine's artful balance of fruit and acidity holds the same excitement of many New Zealand wines.

standing out. Initially soft on the palate, with pleasing acidity, which develops into a harmony of fruit, dominated by peach. Long in the finish, highly aromatic, lightly bittersweet, a classic characteristic of Albarino
