The red wines of the Taurasi zone are the most celebrated fine wines made in Southern Italy. It’s not uncommon to see passionate descriptions of Taurasi as the “Brunello” or “Barolo” Read More...
of Southern Italy—indeed Taurasi has the power and ageability of the biggest Brunellos, but also a heady perfume quality combining earth, spice, and dried potpourri floral aromas with some of the same elegance and range as Barolo. The Aglianico grape at the core of Taurasi wines has all the mystery within it of grapes like Pinot Noir and Tempranillo that show amazing sensitivity to the variables of terroir. Will these wines ever receive the international attention of Barolo or Brunello? Probably not as the volcanic slopes of Mt Vesuvius are difficult to farm and there are only a handful of Taurasi producers—all small production. Two years ago Lucio Mastroberardino, the man behind Terredora, cut the price of this “normale” bottling of Taurasi almost in half—even though the current vintage at the time had 94pts from Wine Advocate.

The 2006 Terredora Taurasi has not been rated yet, but adventurous palates will be rewarded here with aromas of incense, sweet tobacco, rosemary, vivid red cherry, and violets.

famous wine region, Taurasi from the slopes of Mount Vesuvius outside
Naples. It is also the latest ripening grape variety in Italy and can sometimes show forbidding tannins. Terredora’s Taurasi are great wines with impressive stature and ageability, but this humbler Aglianico bottling shows warmth and accessibility in a way the “big wine” never will. The best analogy here might be the comparison between a Côtes du Rhône and a top Châteauneuf-du-Papes. Look for ripe cherries and raspberries complemented by dark spices and an edge of black pepper and sage.

it truly speaks to the notion of terrior and regional characters that make Italian wines so truly unique. The winery is on the lower slopes of the volcano Vesuvius and the vines are planted in volcanic soils that certainly make an imprint on the wines. Made from organically grown,
grapes (80% Piedirosso and 20% Aglianico) ‘Gelsonero’ opens with a pleasant smokiness followed by aromas and flavors of black fruits and herbs (rosemary, bay, thyme). It’s juicy, medium-bodied, offers fresh acidity and mild fine tannins and is simply wonderful with an array of meats.

recent disgorgement in October of 2011. It shows a voluptuous texture and a rich depth of red-fruit flavor, underlined by an intensely stony minerality, and it finishes with excellent balance and length. The ripeness of the 2009 vintage seems to be ideal for this cuvée, balancing the woodiness that Fidèle often shows in its youth—here the components feel harmoniously integrated from the start, allowing the wine to feel pure, expressive and exuberant. Last tasted: 4/12."

THE WINE ADVOCATE - 93 POINTS
The 2009 Extra Brut Fidele (Pinot Noir) is rich, exuberant and powerful. Dried pears, white orchard fruit, flowers and spices burst from the glass in this intense, head-spinning Champagne. Clean veins of minerality frame a huge, powerful finish imbued with the essence of Pinot. Weighty, rich and powerful, the 2009 impresses for its fabulous balance and inviting, utterly irresistible personality. This is a great showing for the Fidele. Disgorgement date: December 12, 2011. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. - Antonio Galloni.
