JOHN GILMAN - VIEW FROM THE CELLAR

May/Jun 2014, Issue #51, Emidio Pepe- Montepulciano’s Maestro Celebrates His Fiftieth Harvest, 5/1/2014 94+ points (Montepulciano d’Abruzzo- Emidio Pepe)
The 2005 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano is a great vintage of this wine in the making, as it soars from the glass in a youthful blaze of black cherries, bitter chocolate, new leather, gentle notes of tariness, lovely botanical tones (like a fine aperitivo) and a fine base of dark soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and still quite primary, with a great core of sappy black fruit, ripe, beautifully-integrated tannins, fine focus and a very long, youthful and superb finish. All this beauty needs is time in the cellar to fully blossom, and it is likely to give the exceptional 2010 vintage a run for its money over the coming three or four decades! (Drink between 2023-2075

by winemaker Antonio Lamona, the result is one of the best quality, most expressive and balanced Montepulcianos around. This wine is also 100% organic, and delivers as a wine that takes no shortcuts.

This wine is fantastic and an incredible value -- if you're aching to get the BBQ started early (if we have the right spring day), this will work wonders with grilled meats. The nose starts with a nice blend of earthy spice, minerals and fresh, sweet and tangy fruit (dark berries, pomegranate); a hint of leather and tea is in the background. In the mouth, bright, balanced fruit meets silky tannins and great acidity. Lush ripe plum and more dark berries lead to a bright and beautiful finish.

passion for the vineyards and the wine. In the old cellar of his grandfather, who was producing small quantities of wine for the love of it, Gianni started creating his wines.

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo was designated as a DOC in 1968. It covers most of Abruzzo ranging from Molise in the south, the Marche in the north and inland against the Apennines Mountains. The Montepulciano grape has a deep purple and ruby color to its juice. It has lower acidity (especially for an Italian varietal) and mild sweeter tannins. The resulting wines tend to be softer and more accessible than Chianti or Nebbiolo for example. This is a delicious wine without breaking the bank. It provides easy drinking cherry and red raspberry flavors and slightly earthy notes.
