of around 4000 hl of wine. The company is eager to respect nature and the environment in order to attain good and healthy products-- and their patience and diligence has paid off.

Winemaker Antonio Lamona is a “true blue,” grizzled farmer-type, who is both utterly likeable and totally invested in his wines. Although his father also grew grapes, Antonio is the first in the family to bottle his own and, beginning in the late sixties, he began cultivating vines that are entirely organic. As Antonio says, “We are very proud to make organic wines–we believe this is the way to obtain the highest quality while also respecting nature and human health.” All grapes are hand-picked and pressed within two hours of harvest. Located on a windy hillside with a vista of the Adriatic Sea, Antonio’s farm is entirely self-sustaining: they produce their own salami, bread, vegetables, olive oil, and cheese. True, you won’t find a “discoteca” within a hundred miles of the place, but in terms of sheer, natural beauty and down-to-earth hospitality, there’s no better place to see.

This 2009 Riserva had a beautiful dark crimson red color in the glass. The nose offers up intriguing scents of dark fruits and spice, mulberry and black plum with white pepper, vanillins and brown baking spices, balanced against wafts of English tobacco, saddle leather and a finishing swirl of midnight florals. The palate starts sweet and dark with cherry and black cherry uplifted by a brace of full acidity as earthy spices and cherry cola dance in the background. The finish introduces a herbal note with a touch of plum tea. This will handle all kinds of red meats and game and is quite apt for a barbecue. Lovely!

by winemaker Antonio Lamona, the result is one of the best quality, most expressive and balanced Montepulcianos around. This wine is also 100% organic, and delivers as a wine that takes no shortcuts.

This wine is fantastic and an incredible value -- if you're aching to get the BBQ started early (if we have the right spring day), this will work wonders with grilled meats. The nose starts with a nice blend of earthy spice, minerals and fresh, sweet and tangy fruit (dark berries, pomegranate); a hint of leather and tea is in the background. In the mouth, bright, balanced fruit meets silky tannins and great acidity. Lush ripe plum and more dark berries lead to a bright and beautiful finish.

passion for the vineyards and the wine. In the old cellar of his grandfather, who was producing small quantities of wine for the love of it, Gianni started creating his wines.

Since the beginning, Masciarelli focused on the potentials of the native wine varieties speaking the language of his people: Montepulciano and Trebbiano. In Masciarelli's productive philosophy, great importance is given to the land and to its wine culture and tradition. The main passion of Gianni is Abruzzo, an extraordinary region, with intense flavors, tastes and scents that you can find in all its typical products: from pasta to wine, extra-virgin olive oil to cheese, from meat to saffron, truffles to pastries, to ventricina salami, to confetti.

This wine is hitting all the cylinders and quickly rose to the top of the barrel against some very good competition to capture our "Wine of the Month" title.

The nose is quite attractive with bright red fruit scents, touches of sarsparilla and root beer, camphor, ginger and a soupcon of earthy spice. In the mouth, soft red fruits dominate, berries and cherries, with earthy hints of anise and spice, black plum and strawberry compote. Velvety tannins and easy acidy lend structure to this quite tasty, easy-drinking wine. Awesome price-to-quality ratio on this top shelf bargain.
