by Dr. Friedrich "Fritz" Zweigelt. It is now the most widely-grown red grape variety in Austria. Berger's Zweigelt is fresh and unoaked, medium-bodied, and moderate in alcohol. This is a lovely, soft, aromatic red reminiscent of pinot noir in its cherry/raspberry scent and taste. There are subtle herbal notes on the clean finish. Serve this wine slightly cool with anything from a roast pork loin to a grilled cheeseburger. This wine comes in a liter bottle sealed with a crown cap. (Put a bottle stopper or an old cork in the bottle if you don't finish it right away.)

Dry, crisp, and impeccably clean, this wine delivers delicious flavors of white flowers, pepper, and pink grapefruit, underscoredby an attractive leesiness - quintessential value Grüner Veltliner. And we love the un-ceremoniousness of the crown cap!

the focus is on defining the fruit. The search is for delicate, complex and refined aromas of blossoms, red berries and cherries, carried by mineral tones and fresh fruit and surrounded by softness, an animating wine with firm structure and good length.

The base wines are vinified separately and allowed to go through malolactic fermentation. Then we create the cuvée. Only the lightest and most lively wines go on to become the Brut Rosé, together with a small amount of wine resulting from the saignée, the very first juice out of the press, of the ripest black grapes, pressed after a brief maceration. The base cuvée is vinified in the bottle in classic fashion by adding sugar and yeast after bottling. After prolonged elevation on the yeast the bottles are disgorged.

by a receding primordial ocean, millions of years ago. The name Wagram comes from "Wogenrain" meaning "shore". These deep soils are perfectly suited to grüner veltliner, producing full bodied, rich and floral wines. Bernhard took over winemaking in 1998, but the Ecker family has 400 years of history farming and raising animals in the area. Since 2004, Bernhard has been the chairman of the “Wagramer Selektion,” the second oldest winery association in Austria. Ecker’s 30 individual plots lie in some of the best locations around Kirchberg am Wagram, including 50 + year old grüner veltliner in the erste lage Mordthal. Ecker is a specialist in roter veltliner as well, and has helped save the plantings of this ancient variety, which have dwindled to under 200 hectares. Interestingly, roter veltliner is not directly related to grüner veltliner, but is a parent variety to many other indigenous Austrian varieties, including neuberger and rotgipfler. It requires poor soils, due to its vigor, and Ecker’s vines are planted in the rocky, gravel rich Steinberg. Care is taken in the vineyards by pruning to limit yields. After a slow, cold fermentation wines are aged in both stainless steel tanks and wood barrels. Resulting wines show an exceptional clarity and charm.

A crossing of Saint-Laurent with Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt was developed by Dr Friedrich 'Fritz' Zweigelt, the viticulturist after whom it is named. Wine made from the grape can be quite rich, but it is better known for its pepper and spicy qualities.

which is all the more surprising considering that this wine has seldom exhibited a more delightful sense of levity. There is almost a sweet sense to the crisp green bean, apple, and pear succulently displayed on a lushly-textured, lees-enriched palate. A refreshing thread of lemon juice and a sense of crushed stone suffusion speak to the brightness and mineral density characteristic for this vintage at its best, while a bittersweet, Pinot Blanc-like suggestion of corn shoots adds to the stimulation of a long finish. This should prove delightfully versatile for at least the better part of half a dozen years."

miles from the Hungarian border. Her south-facing vineyards form an amphitheater around Rust on Lake Neusiedl. These vineyards produce some of the best and most tradition-rich wines in Austria. The yearly hours of sunshine there are much higher than the Austrian average. The sunshine combined with sandy soils mixed with clay and high calcium content provide the ideal prerequisites for impressive, full-bodied dry wines. In 2003 Heidi was awarded "Falstaff Vintner of the Year", making her one of only a handful of women to obtain this honor. Her 2012 Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) is stunningly good: delicate floral and green apple aromas lead to rich, full-bodied, complex stone fruit flavors and a long dry finish.
