THE WINE ADVOCATE - 92 POINTS

The 2013 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Loibner Steinertal offers white fruit flavors and an intense, concentrated nose. Read More...
The wine is a rich and full-bodied, fresh and well-balanced Grüner which combines juiciness with minerality, but remains – at least today – a quite technical wine.

Leo Alzinger is one of the leading estates in the Wachau. The wines are highly rated in Austrian/German wine reviews and David Schildknecht scored the 2012 Riesling Smaragd Steinertal 96 points in issue 212 (and also 96 points for the 2007 vintage in issue 181) and the 2012, as well as the 2007 Riesling Loibenberg Smaragd, 95 points. The clear, cool and minerally-piquant Steinertal Riesling is also my favorite from the 2013s, however, Alzinger's wines did not fascinate me as much as my forerunner and as many other Smaragd wines I tasted in February at the Domäne Wachau in Dürnstein. There is not much to criticize here: the wines are extremely well made, clear, profound, dense, piquant and expressive. But there is something that stops them from really hitting hit my heart. It's not that I dislike them, but I'm not in love with them. If I had to name a certain feature that makes an Alzinger Smaragd an Alzinger Smaragd I don't know what to say, except the very well-made style, and a clear expression of terroir. Possibly, I wish there was a little more of Leo Alzinger's intuition and less perfection?

by Dr. Friedrich "Fritz" Zweigelt. It is now the most widely-grown red grape variety in Austria. Berger's Zweigelt is fresh and unoaked, medium-bodied, and moderate in alcohol. This is a lovely, soft, aromatic red reminiscent of pinot noir in its cherry/raspberry scent and taste. There are subtle herbal notes on the clean finish. Serve this wine slightly cool with anything from a roast pork loin to a grilled cheeseburger. This wine comes in a liter bottle sealed with a crown cap. (Put a bottle stopper or an old cork in the bottle if you don't finish it right away.)

the winery in 1996. Hannes studied wine growing at the oenological school of Klosterneuburg and then worked a harvest in Australia's Barossa valley. In 2007 he produced his first vintage at the family winery. Hannes describes his style of winemaking as "Unplugged" - no fining, no yeasts and no enzymes. This truly delicious Chardonnay was hand harvested from 15 to 20-year-old vines. Fermentation was spontaneous in stainless steel tanks. 30% of the wine was aged in barriques. This Chardonnay features inviting aromas of pears, apples and a hint of citrus. In the mouth the flavors of apple and pear are pure and complex. The rich fruit is nicely balanced by acidity on the long finish. The Wine Enthusiast gave this wine a 90 point rating: "The faintest touch of vanilla and cream barely manages to contain the fragrance of white summer blossom. The palate offers a return to classically restrained, creamy but well-integrated oaked Chardonnay with light-footed balance." Serve this with fish, seafood, chicken or with savory appetizers.

of the corresponding Federspiel. Smoky hints of tobacco join dark leafy greens, while hints of lemon rind and fruit pit serve for persistent, piquant invigoration in a sustained finish. Look to serve this through at least 2018."

STEPHEN TANZER'S INTERNATIONAL 90 POINTS - " A ripe papaya aroma is delicately laced by orange zest, verbena and dill. Despite the wine's opulence and concentration, there's also a very firm structure here due to well-integrated spine of acidity and a graceful mineral underpinning. Wet slate, pepper, melon and salty minerals linger on the long, slightly sweet finish."

which is all the more surprising considering that this wine has seldom exhibited a more delightful sense of levity. There is almost a sweet sense to the crisp green bean, apple, and pear succulently displayed on a lushly-textured, lees-enriched palate. A refreshing thread of lemon juice and a sense of crushed stone suffusion speak to the brightness and mineral density characteristic for this vintage at its best, while a bittersweet, Pinot Blanc-like suggestion of corn shoots adds to the stimulation of a long finish. This should prove delightfully versatile for at least the better part of half a dozen years."

Always an affordable treat from an historic estate, this basic Grüner aged on the lees is simply transcendent in 2013. Heady, soft, fresh aromas of mountain meadow and autumn leaves. The lees add some body to crisp but moderate acid, reminiscent of ripe apples. Strikingly pure, ethereal.

His life is his family and winery and his guiding principle is: "We all have an interest in the progress of the vintage and have two simple aims...to make wines we love to drink ourselves, and to see others enjoying them."

Wine region: Kamptal, Austria. Its name originates from the Kamp River. In the middle of the Kamptal is Austria's largest wine town named Langenlois, next to the well-known wine village Strass is located. A wine growing highlight in the area is the Zöbinger Heiligenstein and the Strasser Gaisberg. Both mountains are now the best sites for Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. Plentiful clay, loess and primary rock soils help create a distinctive Grüner Veltliner. Here its taste is peppery and it has an excellent ageing potential. The pronounced acidity, a characteristic of the Grüner Veltliner as well as the Riesling, adds to this potential.
