by Dr. Friedrich "Fritz" Zweigelt. It is now the most widely-grown red grape variety in Austria. Berger's Zweigelt is fresh and unoaked, medium-bodied, and moderate in alcohol. This is a lovely, soft, aromatic red reminiscent of pinot noir in its cherry/raspberry scent and taste. There are subtle herbal notes on the clean finish. Serve this wine slightly cool with anything from a roast pork loin to a grilled cheeseburger. This wine comes in a liter bottle sealed with a crown cap. (Put a bottle stopper or an old cork in the bottle if you don't finish it right away.)

category. And although Terry actually has several excellent GrüVe liters to choose from, this is our favorite. Dry, crisp, and impeccably clean, this wine delivers delicious flavors of white flowers, pepper, and pink grapefruit, underscoredby an attractive leesiness - quintessential value Grüner Veltliner. And we love the un-ceremoniousness of the crown cap!

the focus is on defining the fruit. The search is for delicate, complex and refined aromas of blossoms, red berries and cherries, carried by mineral tones and fresh fruit and surrounded by softness, an animating wine with firm structure and good length.

The base wines are vinified separately and allowed to go through malolactic fermentation. Then we create the cuvée. Only the lightest and most lively wines go on to become the Brut Rosé, together with a small amount of wine resulting from the saignée, the very first juice out of the press, of the ripest black grapes, pressed after a brief maceration. The base cuvée is vinified in the bottle in classic fashion by adding sugar and yeast after bottling. After prolonged elevation on the yeast the bottles are disgorged.

vibrancy and alcoholic levity (at 12%), setting-up a scintillatingly interactive exchange among juicy white peach, invigoratingly tart crabapple, iris-like inner-mouth perfume, almond, mineral salts, stone, toasted nuts and marjoram. A subtle black tea-like astringency and hint of peach fuzz serve for stimulating counterpoint to the caressingly silken textural undertone. This beauty should prove worth following through at least 2022."

age he has already received Austria’s highest accolade as Falstaff's Winemaker of the Year in 2008. The Engabrunner Stein Erste Lage, rests on the border of Wagram and Kamptal, technically belonging to the Kamptal region. This wine is grown on soils of gneiss, chalk and loess, as well as red and yellow sands. The grapes are grown on old vines, the oldest of which were planted in 1957. The wine receives a 30 hour maceration on the skins which contributes to its intensity of mineralic expression. The Stein is now RESPEKT - biodynamic certified.

his crew harvests – smells cool and refreshingly of mint and other high-toned herbal essences along with hints of lentil, whose herbal, nutty piquancy comes out more prominently on a soothing, buoyant and consummately refreshing palate. Juicy grapefruit and cucumber are mingled with stony and saline nuances for compulsively saliva-inducing and next-sip-taking finish. Plan to enjoy this pure, refined, extraordinary value through at least 2017.
Bernhard Ott continues to expand the acreage under his control and to fine-tune both his cellar and his somewhat renegade (i.e. not strictly by Steiner’s book) biodynamic viticulture regimen. (Some of the relevant developments are canvassed in my issue 197 report.) To my palate, the outstanding wines of this estate indeed keep getting better, and the whole 2012 range of Gruner Veltliner – which makes up virtually Ott’s entire production – is impressive. “We got a few showers at crucial periods to alleviate the drought,” he explains, “and the May frost didn’t affect any of our top vineyards, though it trimmed our crop overall because on the flat lands the vineyards were kaput.”

of fruit from Renner I have described in past reports – leads with mossy, smoky, peat-like pungency that persists on a substantial, extract-, lees-, and glycerol-rich palate, its savor akin to toasted grains and somehow slightly sinister and decidedly low-toned in personality, adeptly integrating numerous bitter nuances of seeds, pits and herbs.
