AUSONIA 12 "APOLLO" MONTEPULCIANO DI ABRUZZO

Ausonia Azienda Agricola is a relatively new winery in Abruzzo, Italy. Simone Binelli, after 6 years as a pharmacist, decided to pursue his passion for wine-- so he studied and graduated (with honors) at the School of Viticulture and Enology of Florence. All of this was done with the support and blessing of the woman who was to become his wife, Francesca.

In 2006 he began managing the agricultural part of the company and from 2011 with the birth of the cellar also of the enological part with the support of trusted professionals. The name of the winery, Ausonia, came about after Simone was on a walk with his father, an entomologist for passion, who noticed a particular butterfly near the property. Ausonia is in fact the name of this butterfly quite rare in Italy, but very present among the gullies along the company and the Regional Natural Reserve of Atri Badlands, where he found his natural habitat. From this is derived the choice to call the wines with the names of the butterflies of the Abruzzo region.

This is one of our favorite regions in Italy as the quality-to-value ratio skews heavy toward quality-- plainly, you get great wines for not a lot of money. That is the case here. Ausonia "Apollo" has a nose of red fruits and big spices; it's almost Rhône-y with fresh black pepper and a hint of garrique. The palate is rich and viscous, laden with mixed red and blue fruits, more spices, black licorice, pepper (black and white), sea salt, excellent tannins. The finish is easy and full of forward fruits, gentle acidity. Food matching: pasta with elaborate sauces, ideal for roast lamb and grilled meats, moderately strong cheeses.
